Giving Monet Medication

I know it's long, but I wanted you guys to see each session in its entirety so you could see the prep that went into setting myself up for success as well as how I made micro changes and adjustments for how Monet was responding to me that day.

I did not film days 1-4 because it was super easy to have Monet come into my hand and quickly medicate her, but by day 4-5 I saw hesitation which told me those trained behaviors were starting to deteriorate because of the outcome of the medicine giving.

Luckily for me, the evening medication was just one so it required less from me.

Overall, I am super happy with how Monet handled everything and feel confident medicating her in the future if needed. She has made a full recovery!

Giving Monet Medication

This is very inspiring! I give meds to my bigger (a Jardine's & an African Grey) is tahini. My lovebird is still freaked out by hands.

He’s a cockatiel. We’re just now starting to enjoy millet, but not yet at the “treat” level.

That can be so hard! What type of bird is he?

I found her on the back porch one day not putting any weight on one of her feet so I took her in and had an x-ray of the foot and they found a small fracture. She is too tiny to really wrap it, do surgery or pins or anything so we kept her immobile as much as possible in the hutch for the first week or so.

I held the top mandible gently in place with my finger and pried the bottom open with the syringe until I could fit it in enough to confidently push in the medication.

I need to ask when Mo was like “I am not gonna open my mouth” how did you get her to do it?

Thank you for sharing! Definitely can happen to anyone! It’s on my training list now! Love seeing all the steps! This didn’t happen overnight and it makes me realize it needs to be train! Will address that in my consult with Kim for sure.

I must have missed it - what was Mo's original ailment? I just love her, so colorful and such big eyes.

Thank you for sharing this. So many good tips! I have one that is on meds and, unfortunately will be on them for the rest of his life. Unfortunately we didn’t have the solid base that you have with Monet, as we are still in the process of diet conversion, so training hasn’t started yet. We’re still looking for a high enough value reward as he has no interest in millet.
