How I got Marabou to step up (50+ days together!)

Here's an update on Marabou and a break down of how Landon worked on "step up" as a trick. Keep in mind, step up IS a trick. It is something that should be paid/reinforced and not expected 100% of the time. For more hands-off or shy, or even aggressive birds, the techniques used in this video will work wonders.

When I saw your crate training video, it’s great but my main question is how did the bird actually get close enough to the cage to be able to train….Crate training is our next step for sure! 2024-11-09 13:47:39 +0000 UTCI feel like maybe we need a video on moving around a bird you can’t handle! Have you seen the crating video I did? I trained her to go on her own in and out of her crate first. Then I would take her in the crate to the aviary :) it happened way before step up did!

Also question for you….. in your video you say Marabou would go spend time in the aviary and she would become cage bond to the carrier cage inside….. How did you move her when you started day 1 from inside cage to outdoor aviary? My galah is definitely cage bond too…… He walks on the ground and that is my cue to interact with him…. That is where I make the most progress…But I would love to encourage him to spend time on the Java tree in the living room….. not just walk on the ground in the bird room….we are so not there yet! Kim and you need to tag team! Can I have a consult with both of you 🤣

2024-11-07 19:58:26 +0000 UTCFor Marabou, since we started with an open hand on the back of the couch..and moved to working on surfaces that my hand was resting on, it ended up being just the way it worked best for us, and an intentional decision I made for her to have as much freedom and choice as possible! I wanted her to feel she had lots of room to move around and step off if needed. I’ve seen other trainers use this technique, and it happened to work really well with Marabou so we stuck with it. I think for some birds it might be an invitation to rush the shoulder, or possibly even feel less stable. For her, however, since she was SO fearful it worked really well.

Definitely kick my butt to continue my really slow journey with my 31y old galah.. step up and weighing in the making! And thank you Kim for being a supporter and there to motivate me to continue ! Geeezzz some day I feel we are going backwards!
