Bungo Stray Dogs Episode 3 Reaction

This was... HYPE! I want more action scenes from this series. If this continues, I'm going to really enjoy this one. What did you think of this episode? I also like how the characters are named after authors (as some of you pointed out), and how the power relates to their work in some way. Cool stuff.

Been loving it as of Episode 9. My favorite episodes are 3, 5, and 8 so far. Definitely a fun show if not a bit funky. ;)

This was definitely the episode that fully sold me on BSD. The first two are exciting, promising, fun, and hilarious, and then episode three dropkicks you in the face with how serious things can get (and how serious things often DO get). I also think one big strength of the show is that it's able to balance more comedic scenes and moments with the really dark, violent, serious scenes incredibly well. It's really rare for a tone shift to feel jarring at all, and when there IS humor during really serious moments, it always feels in-character and gets delivered relatively smoothly without necessarily shifting the overall tone much. I also think when there IS a jarring tone shift, it's pretty clearly on purpose and works either literally always or almost always (I'm sure mileage varies person to person but it's definitely a strong point overall). I think S1E3 here is a good example - you have a lot of the same humor (and gallows humor) for a lot of the episode, you have all the stuff with Atsushi having no idea how to deal with Tanizaki and Naomi just kinda... doing their thing, and then it just absolutely clotheslines the viewer's expectations completely with how quickly things turn legit brutal. So far it never really loses that balance, at least IMO. Overall I'd say the show gets darker and more intense over time, so the ratio of comedy to serious/intense parts shifts somewhat, but it never discards its incredibly specific brand of comedy and that helps a lot sometimes when some truly dire things are happening later. It's not an approach that would necessarily be ideal for ANY story, but it's definitely right for BSD, and the show pretty much just keeps on nailing it. It also starts to showcase more how creative fight scenes can get, both in terms of fighting with gifts and just fighting in general. I'd call this episode's fight on the low end of creative/complex by comparison to a lot of stuff in the show but even that low end is still really damn good... and like just about everything in the show, it only gets better with time
