Chang'e is the goddess of the moon, but she wasn't always that way. In the ancient world, there existed 10 suns that would cross the sky one after another, but one day something went wrong and all 10 stayed in the sky at the same time and the world started to burn. To save humanity, the Jade Emperor called upon the greatest archer in all the land, the mortal Hou Yi. With 9 perfect shots, Hou Yi shot down all but one sun and for his great deed, the Jade Emperor bestowed upon him Heaven's greatest gift, the Elixer of Immortality. However, there was only enough for one person, and while the idea of becoming a god appealed to him, Hou Yi knew that if he drank it, he would have to leave his beloved wife, Chang'e behind. So instead he hid the Elixer and decided to live out his days with the woman he loved. But fate is often cruel. Years went by and Hou Yi took on an apprentice and one day the apprentice learned of the Elixer and decided to steal it for himself. So, one day while they were out hunting, the apprentice struck Hou Yi with a rock from behind and ran back to his master's house. The apprentice, believing he had killed Hou Yi, threatened to do the same to Chang'e unless she gave him the Elixer. Heartbroken by her husband's death and not wanting such power in the hands of someone so evil, she drank the Elixer herself and became a goddess. Hou Yi showed up moments later and took revenge on his apprentice, but it was too late. Chang'e could no longer with in the mortal world with her husband, but rather than live in Heaven, she chose to live on the Moon so she could always watch over him and he could look up at her every night.
