2022-04-23 17:01:57 +0000 UTCI really don't understand a lot of the criticisms of Captain Marvel (sorry, getting into the Patreon version late). People have said there was no traditional origin story and that we didn't see her power grow, etc. But that is not the only way to tell an origin story. Superman, for example, is the most powerful being on earth as a CHILD. His whole journey is to figure out his place in the world. Carol's journey was to find her origin story since it was taken from her. As for her powers, she's a lot like Thor, who as we've seen can survive in space without a spacesuit, shoot powerful lightning out of his hands, fly (with his hammer), go toe-to-toe with the Hulk (and win?) and generally kick ass against crowds of punks. But Thor is A) a male power fantasy, and B) an alien that is the strongest of a race of strong aliens. This is why he gets a pass for being insanely powerful. Carol's story was written as a metaphor for the female experience, where women don't know their own power and are held back by people who want to keep them under control. Her origin story was that of a woman who grew up and achieved things despite people standing in her way, which is totally relatable to women who have to work twice as hard to succeed in male-dominated professions. That male pilot in her flashback telling her "You know why it's called a cockpit, don't you?" was a perfect example. Carol was a cocky, confident woman to be sure. You can't be an Air Force pilot if you aren't. Her memory was wiped after getting her powers, but she was trained to be a "Kree warrior hero" so you can't blame her for being ballsy and confident there either. Her journey was to learn that she was so much more that they allowed her to be, and she finally broke free. I'd say that's a good direction to go for the first female hero movie Marvel's done. They didn't even make her a caring nurturer stereotype or have her break down in tears. I liked it.

I hope you never feel like you can't share your genuine opinion - in this case I definitely don't disagree, but even if I did, I'd rather hear what you really think! Captain Marvel is definitely one of the weaker Marvel films, luckily it's saved in part by some nice moments here and there.
