The funny thing is the movie is a satire of militarism and fascism but the book it’s based on is absolutely not. I highly recommend reading the book when you have the chance. Both the movie and book are great, but they’re *very* different.

Seeing them in fairly rapid succession, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Verhoeven is actually a really good director. I've always enjoyed those films in a popcorn movie sense, but I'm struck by how internally consistent his movies are, the solid performances he gets from his actors (even Denise Richards), and how well-realized and detailed his worlds are. That takes true singularity of vision and purpose, so he's definitely bumped up quite a few notches in my estimation of him. Thanks Dasha for the extra attention you give the movies helping me rediscover them!
