It's a great film, but very difficult to watch. The fellow who plays the drill sergeant was originally hired as an advisor because he was an actual drill sergeant during the Vietnam war, but the director Stanley Kubrick decided he was perfect for the role. Mr. Kubrick has worked in many genres, horror, sci-fi, historical, war etc., but only made 13 feature films in his long career because he had a particular vision for each and he wanted to get it right and was extremely focused. You've seen The Shining right? Anyway, as hard as it was, you're reaction was very moving and observant. I'd recommend EYES WIDE SHUT by Stanley Kubrick with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, which is in a category all by itself, but might be considered a mystery film although it contains a good amount of nudity although that definitely doesn't take away from the story.
