I think we're far in enough that I can drop some history, so here we go. This show is only semi-historical, being based more on the Icelandic Sagas, specifically the Tale of Ragnar Lodbrok, rather than actual history. Michael Hirst, the show's writer, has talked about the show being something of his own saga, rather than following point-for-point the actual saga on which it is based. As for your question of the time period during which the show takes place, it plays around a good bit with the actual, historical facts, but the raid on the monestary at Lindesfarne happened in 793 CE, so that should give you a good idea of the relative time period. If you have any more questions, ask away and I'll do my best to answer. Hope this helps, and keep up the good work!

The next 4 episodes are what took the show to another level for me. From here on it is so damn fantastic.
