It's can be a confusing patchwork of kingdoms & territories under Saxon, Dane, Briton, Welsh & Scottish rule. I hope that clears things up for you two for this season anyway.

The Danelaw, the territory conquered by them makes up most of Northumbria and parts of Mercia & East Anglia, the middle and eastern kingdoms of England. The brothers Erik & Siegfrid control or controlled York, Durham is ruled by Kjartan, Cumberland is a mix of Saxon & Dane now ruled by Guthred.
