same here, I've been following anime/manga since around '92, but always walked past hxh. DIdnt check it out until 2016 and now its my all time favorite work of fiction.

That scene was so brutal the first time I watched it. Really cemented this arc for me.

Edgaras is right the little Gyro story is just showing the type of people that the ants are consuming. The show has shown that the ants have the traits and sometimes memories of the people they are made from. They are eating people that want to burn the modern world down.

I do believe it's a lead into the next following arcs for HxH, I think thats why.

I mean , HxH does that tho, they tell you about sometihng ,give significant time and focus and then leave it alone for tens of episodes until its the right tiime . And I feel like that was the purpose of Gyro backstory , also just imagine chimera ants are taking genes from people they eat, and Gyro could be one of those people , just imagine that kind of mindset havin no regard to human life paired up with chimera ants agressive nature . And while I agree that HxH as a show starts all sunshine and rainbows on the surface, if you pay attention you can see that the world of HxH is pretty fucked up . Just hunter exams alone showed that in bits and pieces and I feel whole show was just a giant biuld up towards Chimera Ant arc because people are so invested in Gon and Killua so its the best way to show how dangerous this world can get.
