According to the mythology, the ultimate paradise, Valhalla is reserved only for warriors who've died in battle. If you die from any other means, you don't go to Valhalla. Bjorn and Askeladd fought so that Bjorn could die in battle and go to Valhalla as opposed to dying in bed from infection, which would be seen as a coward's death.
