Honestly, the show is really good at connecting all the dots and loose ends if you think about it. Most characters and plotlines are not random at all. Joseph Salvatore was mentioned way back in Season 1, when Elena was researching Stefan after the old man, Tikki's grandfather, mentioned that he knew Stefan in 1953. His covered body was shown being taken out from the Salvatore Boarding House in the news tape in S1 Ep 5, and now we know why. We also now know why Damon's humanity was turned off when we saw him in the 70s flashbacks and when he appeared in S1. I gotta give TVD its credit, they know how to write a show for the most part.
