I think this episode cemented that season 3 was gonna go way deeper into the mythology than ever before. Us learning that even Klaus is afraid of somebody, digging deeper into Stefan's ripper days and learning why Klaus was so interested in Stefan in the first place. Also we meet Rebekah, who is easily one of the fan favorite characters.
As for the break up: Stefan needed to be this harsh bc Elena didn't take any of his "lighter hints". He knows that if he goes back to Elena, Klaus will find them and kill Elena for real this time. Stefan is saving everyone's butt right here. I get why Elena and Damon wanna fight for him but convincing Stefan to come home is not the way. They need to get rid of Klaus. And since Stefan doesn't see that happening, he stays put.
Oh and hard agree on the "stop hurting caroline". idk why she always gets tortured, even though she's the most functional vampire among all of them.
