Coppa and YouTube

Hey guys,

Just a quick update on the state of the nation with YouTube and the FTC.

So basically, YT made a massive error and didn’t comply with some pretty tough laws over there in the states regarding the collection of data and children.

So as a consequence, YT and the FTC is cracking down VERY BLOODY HARD on all YouTube content creators.

Including yours truly.

The video link above gives a bit of insight into the whole thing.

Essentially, from 1st January 2020, any video that is deemed “For Children” by the FTC and YT will be severely punished.

$40,000 fines for each individual offence. For the creators.

Not YouTube.

So here’s the situation,

I’ve marked my videos NOT FOR KIDS, because, well quite frankly, they’re not.

But, because the videos are about anime with cute looking animated characters, they could very well be deemed Children’s Content and I could be fined.

So I’ve literally had to go and make every video on my channel, +18.

Which severely affects revenue and channel growth (because Age Restricted Content is not published in the recommend feeds of YTs algorithms).

So that means that you lovely people over here on PATREON just became my biggest supporters.

I think, moving forward, PATREON will see more exclusive content as I’m getting quite nervous about putting any content on YT that could get me into real financial trouble.

I don’t have 42K just laying around. Not to mention the number of videos that could be affected.

I hope this will change.

The entirety of YT is in a panic and I wanted you guys to be updated.

Thanks again for your continued support.

It truly is appreciated.

Will keep you posted.

Dean.

Yup. It’s a mess. And really confusing.

I'm also concerned about the vague information these people want to give to Youtube videos and the "classification process" of kids vs non kids videos. As stated in the video, those who mark their videos as non-kids videos but APPEAR to be kids videos based on these nonsensical guidelines will face dire consequence. So what exactly is the logic behind that? I understand having to deal with videos with adult content labeled as for kids, but vice versa just sounds pointless and idiotic.

I would LOVE to see what happens when the FTC tries to fine a non-US citizen (not you in particular as none of us want to experience the interruption of content). More than likely YouTube will just shut down the account to avoid all the rigamarole, but I think that would just open up another can of worms, legally.

Yeah, my main source of revenue is from Roblox videos, despite most a lot of my humor not being technically appropriate for really young audiences I imagine I am inevitably screwed because the game itself is played by a lot of kids, despite several of my videos already getting demonetized for being inapproriate. The Coppa law is bad because what's decided to be for kids isn't our decision, and the way they imply it, the context of the videos doesn't even matter. I'm willing to make my videos more mature than what they are, but I don't think it would make a difference. You will be marked just for visuals if it looks eye catching for children. Kinda weird. I don't know what I will do with a 60% revenue hit. I haven't marked my channel for anything quite yet i'm waiting until January, but hopefully things don't turn out to be as bad as they seem. Or else I will have to find a second source of revenue. lol which i have been trying to take steps towards. i guess this is what they mean by not having all your eggs in one basket

That's really rough. You will still have my support here as much as I can!

That is unfathomably stupid... if you mark it as not appropriate for kids, you've done your job. Those factors are so absolutely vague that they can interpret it however they so wish on every individual basis. Hell, one of the factors is what ads are on the site - that's not something creators even have any control over!

So much stuff in the world in being flipped upside down right now. You just do what you can the way you want that is best for you.

MAN i heard bout this too, I just wanna create what i love without being fined 40k.
