It was the only home she had ever known and being forced to give up its peace, solitude and simple lifestyle and move to the noise, bustle and danger of a city was terrifying.
Ever since her mother had run off with a tractor salesman Stella's devastated father had turned to the bottle and, despite his twenty two year old daughter's best efforts, the farm had failed, loans had been called in and an eviction notice served.
Desperate to take care of her heart broken father Stella made the only choice she could. She would leave her beloved remote home and drive the four hundred miles to the city to attend a job interview she already arranged over the phone. With just one month until her father would be forcibly evicted the young woman was determined to do all she could to find a place to live, earn some money and take care of the man who had so lovingly raised her.
Taking one last look back Stella climbed into her ageing Beetle, took a deep breath and fired up the noisy old engine. With a clatter of valves, a whine from the transmission and in a cloud of oily blue grey smoke she left her past life behind and headed for a very uncertain future.
