Chapter 25: Return Policy

A considerable span of time had drifted by since they embarked on their maiden voyage aboard their new ship. Zoro, the swordsman of the crew, was in a state of light slumber. Meanwhile, Nami, the cartographer, meticulously pored over navigational maps. Kaya, their newest member, remained engrossed in the pages of a book, and Usopp, another newest member, was embroiled in a playful mock battle, gracefully swinging a pole about the deck. Luffy, the charismatic captain, was hunched in a secluded corner, completely absorbed in some task.

Observing his shipmates, Usopp couldn't help but voice his concerns, "Aren't you guys a little too relaxed?"

Just as he uttered those words, Luffy sprang to life, his boisterous voice commanding everyone's attention. "Done!" he yelled, waving a hand-painted Jolly Roger high above his head.

A bemused Zoro, roused from his nap, questioned, "Done with what?"

Luffy, grinning from ear to ear, proudly presented the crude emblem. The others gazed upon it in a strange mixture of confusion and mild horror. To their eyes, it bore an uncanny resemblance to its original, distorted design.

Who knew even after fusing with Zack, their shared artistic talent remained woefully lacking.

"This is our...mark?" they collectively inquired, genuine bewilderment etched on their faces.

Luffy, undeterred by their bafflement, answered confidently, "Yeah. Pretty cool, huh?"

"It looks. . . cute," Kaya giggled.

Usopp, with a sigh, decided it was time to take matters into his own hands. He stepped up to the plate. "Shouldn't our mark be one that strikes fear into our enemies?" Zoro echoed the sentiment.

With a hint of exasperation, Usopp intervened, "Allow the artist to demonstrate." He deftly wielded a paintbrush and, with skillful strokes, transformed the black flag. The new symbol that now adorned it was unquestionably an improvement, but the skull bore the unmistakable signature of Usopp's long nose, and slingshot.

Luffy, irritation evident in his expression, looked on as Zoro chimed in, both voices in unison. "Rejected," they declared resolutely, prompting Usopp to give it another go.

Usopp, with a gleam of artistic pride in his eyes, raised the design for all to see. It was the one that Luffy immediately recognized - a skull and crossbones wearing a straw hat.

Kaya, her face brightening with approval, chimed in, "Much better."

Nami, known for her attention to detail, couldn't help but admire it too. "That's very good," she remarked.

Zoro, ever the stoic critic, crossed his arms and grumbled, "It still looks goofy to me."

Luffy, however, was undeterred. "That's the one. Draw it on the sails too, Usopp," he said, pointing to the canvas overhead. Usopp, fueled by the crew's approval, took on the task with gusto. After adding the emblem to the sails, he collapsed onto the deck, completely drained from his artistic efforts.

Luffy gazed up at the newly adorned sails and couldn't contain his excitement. "Now, the pirate ship Going Merry has everything she needs," he declared with a wide grin, just as the sky started to cloud over. As the first drops of rain began to fall, he couldn't help but think, 'Oh yeah. And this is the start of our first adventure!'

. . .

"Oh yeah, how much money do we have, Nami?" Luffy asked suddenly when they found a moment of solitude.

"With Kaya's contribution, we've got approximately 45,000,000 beli. What do you have in mind?" Nami inquired.

"I was thinking about buying a particular spell to make our lives easier," Luffy explained. "I saw it in the shop; it allows you to expand the space within a confined room or enclosure. I want to learn it and use it to enlarge the kitchen, the storeroom, the master bedroom, and the space below deck."

Nami's eyes sparkled with intrigue at the idea. She hurried to investigate this intriguing spell, discovering that it was one of many spells that manipulated space.

The spell had the capacity to stretch the confines of a room, a cave, or any enclosed space to a certain extent. With advanced mastery and sufficient energy, it could even expand a room to the size of a large continent. However, certain considerations, such as the structural integrity of the walls and the energy required to sustain the spell, were crucial.

Nevertheless, it was a highly practical spell, and Nami saw the value in investing money in it.

"25,000,000 beli! That's quite a hefty price," Nami noted.

"Come on, Nami, it's not that expensive. We'll earn it back in no time," Luffy reassured her with his characteristic optimism.

"Alright, we can buy it. But how long will it take for you to learn it? You're the only one who has a good amount of magic right now," Nami inquired.

"I'm not entirely sure. The learning curve will depend on the complexity of the spell. After all, it would be my first one," Luffy admitted, a touch of humility in his voice.

"Argh, with your intellect, I worry it might take an eternity," Nami grumbled.

"Hey, don't underestimate me. I might not look like the studious type, but I'm perfectly capable of learning a simple spell," Luffy retorted with a confident grin.

Nami gave a look to Luffy as if she didn't believe him. Still, she gave in and bought the spell from the shop. But before giving it to Luffy she opened the small book and started reading it.

Luffy waited on the side, his excitement palpable. The prospect of learning a spell and harnessing magic for the first time had him brimming with anticipation. After all, who could resist the allure of magic?

Nami read the entire introduction and then some before passing the book to Luffy, running her hand through her hair in frustration.

Luffy, undeterred by Nami's exasperation, dove into the book with enthusiasm, eager to learn the spell.

The spell that expands the space inside a room is a sophisticated application of spatial magic. It revolves around the manipulation of the room's physical dimensions, effectively making the interior appear larger than its exterior. This enchantment is exceptionally handy for converting small living areas into more spacious ones, accommodating large gatherings in confined spaces, or concealing valuable or secret items within a seemingly limited room.

The spell's operation involves several key steps:

Visualization: The caster starts by mentally forming a clear image of the desired expansion. They must envision the new room layout, including its dimensions and structural changes.

Drawing the Runes: Spatial magic often relies on the use of intricate runes or symbols. The caster sketches these symbols on the room's surfaces – the walls, floor, or ceiling. These symbols serve as the focal points for the spell.

Channelling Energy: The caster channels their magical energy into the inscribed runes, infusing them with the power required for the expansion.

Warping Space: The enchanted runes act as the catalyst for the spell. Once activated, they distort the space within the room, creating a pocket dimension that makes the room's interior larger than its physical boundaries.

Maintaining the Enchantment: To preserve the expansion, the caster must continuously supply magical energy. This necessitates unwavering focus to prevent the spell from reverting the room's dimensions to their original state.

The amount of magical energy needed for this spell can fluctuate based on several factors. The size of the room, the desired duration of the expansion, the caster's proficiency, and the complexity of the expansion all influence the magical requirements. In essence, a small-scale, temporary expansion may be achievable by an intermediate mage, while creating a vast, permanent enlargement likely necessitates the expertise and magical potency of a master magician.

It's crucial to exercise caution when working with such advanced spatial magic, as even slight errors or misjudgments during the casting process can result in unforeseen consequences, like unstable dimensional fluctuations within the room. Consequently, mages must exercise meticulous care and precision when attempting such potent spatial manipulations.

"Damn!" Luffy cursed. The spell was turning out to be far more complex than he had initially anticipated.

Luffy glanced at Nami, then back at the perplexing book, and finally gulped. Turning to Nami, he asked, "Did you happen to check if there's a return policy at the system's shop?"
