Guthrie was never the governor??? I thought for certain he was.

Oh one more thing, I'm fairly sure the Guthries were never the governors in Nassau, they are a trade & shipping family. I think (?) there hasn't been a governor in Nassau since the family were killed on the beach about 10 years ago (like we heard in the flashbacks). Since about that time the pirates have controlled the bay. Although at some point there was the Spanish raid that killed Eleanor's mum, I think that was in between the flashbacks and current timeline.

So now after the episode... I get what you're saying about wanting to see the conversation, and what happened during the time jump, but I don't think it's really _needed_ here. After the events of the previous season, those things change the world in such a profound way that I kind of like the idea of doing a time skip, so that dropping into it we see right away that we are living in a different world entirely. Flint has become the monster, John makes some very good points about his reputation IMO, we see Hornigold turned British pirate hunter, and with a couple of conversations we learned all we needed to know about the fort, the agreement between Flint, Vane, and Rackham, and everything transpiring in Nassau. So now we get really a new story, building on the foundations of the last one. As for Blackbeard, we'll find out what he's up to soon enough. Personally I just relish the opportunity to see Ray Stevenson on screen again. A wonderful actor, gone way too early IMO. As an aside, have you ever seen HBO's "Rome"? If not, it's a FANTASTIC series that he starred in, that would be worth reacting to. Only 2 seasons unfortunately, but that makes it a quick watch. Oh, there are many islands that make up the Bahamas. New Providence island is one of them. Nassau is the city that sits on that island, which today is the capitol of the Bahamas, but the island is more than just the city itself.

I hadn't realized all the details that Gillian shared, but to your points in your opening - yeah! The attention to detail, the amazing sense of realism that everyone involved with the show has managed to capture, it's like very little else I've seen. It is indeed very easy to forget that these are actors and sets and fictional stories. One of the things I truly love about this show.

Your comments at the start - that's one of the reasons I love this show. Everyone cared about what they were creating. Someone at Starz loved it so much the show got more money for every season (even though Straz then didn't know how to publicise it), so its gets bigger sets and more intricate action shots the longer it goes on. They didn't have to just make do with sets made with the up-front costs from Season 1. The series was filmed in Capetown South Africa, so most of the overseas cast members spent a good proportion of each year down there essentially trapped with each other in a little bubble. So they spent a lot of time talking character development with each other, running scenes like you would for a play, and with many more takes and thought than is typical for a TV series. Plus all the actors with major pirate roles started each season with a 'pirate boot camp' to get them fit in a way that makes it seem plausible that they could do the physical work required on a ship. They also had really good 'extras' retention so lots of the background ship crews etc stay consistent throughout the series.
