I thought that was the other "J" pirate. There are so many of them! I'm still trepidatious about no Vane going forward, but we'll see.

First things first, I cannot agree more about stunt crews deserving awards. It's WAY overdue. They are the unappreciated heroes of Hollywood and we would never have the kind of amazing shows and movies we do without them. Cool that you are getting viewers from all over the place. Tonight, I'm just drinking water on a cold night in Boston. Now on to this episode... damn what a powerful episode. I honestly don't remember how I reacted the first time I saw this. I think I was in the same boat as Gillian in that I appreciated Vane MUCH more on a second watch than the first time. His character is so "what you see is what you get" on the surface, but underneath that there's a lot of nuance and emotional complexity. Meanwhile, thinking further on his death, I'm thinking of his talk with the preacher, about finding a moment of peace. Clearly, Vane had no respect for anything the preacher said or stood for, and yet... he found his moment of peace in confronting the death that awaited him. And his moment of peace was to offer a spark of resistance to those who had forgotten it. A big "fuck you", if you will, which is the most Charles Vane way to go out there is, if you think about it. And on top of all that, so much cool stuff happened in this episode that it's easy to forget with the hanging overshadowing it all. I really liked Jack's speech about the chest in the beginning of the episode. I think it brought home the weight of what they were attempting to do, while at the same time making it a bit more personal. Which book-ended nicely with his volunteering to take command of the Walrus in the battle - to be their Charles Vane in that fight. And your reaction to Flint having words with Silver in the camp about what happened with Dobbs and the darkness behind it absolutely mirrored my own. That whole conversation was DELICIOUS. Warning or welcome - "yes". I love those scenes so much. And there was so much more too, but this comment is already huge. This episode is just so dense and I loved every minute of it. I'm so glad this show got made, even if it never quite got the awards or accolades it deserved. It's some of the best writing and acting (and stunt work!) I've seen on television. Until the next one...

These episodes are packed! Weirdly the first time I watched Black Sails I didn't really care for Vane, so this didn't hit very hard. On rewatch I really appreciated his character and saw all the nuances. I still wasn't expecting them to actually kill him off though! But I know for many he was their favourite, and some thought the show had made a huge mistake, there was no way you could have Black Sails without Vane. But even now I can't decide if I like S3 or S4 better - they are both great. Trust the writers! S3 has SO much in it and the final 3 eps all step up. Did you spot the guy Billy recruited to stir up dissent in Nassau? Jacob Garret, the guy who mistook Anne for a prostitute and dreamed of being famous.
