I just need to say that I freaking love this show. I thought this episode really killed it. It was a great season finale. Like Gillian said, the framing of scenes interspersed with yet another wonderful Flint/Silver conversation was beautiful. And the contents of that conversation was fascinating. It is truly amazing how, in 28 episodes, John has gone from this weak, cowardly, conniving hustler to a confident, driven, respected student and rival of Flint. And at no point did I think it felt contrived. And Billy and his gang of conspirators, understanding the power of gossip and stories... I got chills listening to Max read that letter at the end. Looking forward to watching S4 with you, and glad you're on the mend. Hope you're 100% soon.

100% agreed about the way the whole episode was framed. Both sides of it, the conversation and the battle, are both captivating, but intertwined like that was beautiful. I thought they did a really good job introducing those elements of TI that you mentioned, with one season left to build those up. I read the book again after this show ended the first time and I do think they did a good job with that, particularly with John. He's different, in the book, but in a way that tracks from here to there.

I love the way this episode is put together - the juxtaposition of the quiet fireside conversation (Flint really told Silver everything!) and the epic battle. Then the building of a legend back in Nassau - so good! The first time I watched this, knowing the end of the series was coming soon, I was excited to see the more theatrical elements from Treasure Island being introduced - buried treasure, the black spot, the legend of Long John Silver - they feel earned in a way they wouldn't have if they'd been there from the start of the series. But also I wanted to know how close to the start of the book would we get by the end of the series? I won't mention specifics as you haven't read the book, but some characters have a way to go compared to their literary depiction. How would they deal with the 'loosely historical characters' compared to the fictional?
