We start the final season much as we did the first, with a battle on sea and carnage. So much carnage!
Eleanor has a new role on the island, and Flint discovers that Billy has taken away much of his authority, giving the unofficial title of "pirate king" to John.

My understanding is that if Rogers stays governor, it's not that he collects money and doesn't send it to England, it's that he retains the position officially, collects taxes for England, and England in return either covers the debts directly or, by virtue of him being actually Governor of Nassau and a representative of the crown and entitled to a pretty generous salary, they influence those creditors to back off so that he can pay off the debts as originally agreed. I really loved the showdown between Billy and Flint in this episode. I think it made a lot of sense given their history. Looking forward to the next one!

2025-01-25 20:42:53 +0000 UTCAnother thought about how characters can change as a series or book set develops but the end point has already been set. I'm thinking Harry Potter: should Ron and Hermione or Harry and Ginny really have gotten married to tie everything off in a neat bow? Or in Game of Thrones: everyone loved Daenerys but did the writers do enough to make us realistically want to hate her by the end? (I mean we know there was a lot wrong with the last few seasons of GoT!). So similarly, I was worried with the set up starting end of S3. I like both Silver and Flint, and I want to live in a fantasy world where they all live happily ever after in a pirate republic in Nassau (Vane is there too, it's my fantasy). But we've got a book to lead up to and I was worried the writers would awkwardly force me to choose between them in S4. How will S4 go? I mean I know now, but first time through this was my worry.
