Misty was embarrassed, now that she realised that she did not ask for his name way back in Viridian City Pokemon Centre.
Not only that but it was so obvious! There are only a few kids that age in Pellet Town, and she even knew he was starting his journey soon!
The redhead has been following him on the news since the guidebook on Magicarp's came out!
She quickly pulled off her backpack and pulled out a familiar book and then gave it to confused Ray.
"Please! your autograph!" The water-type Pokemon trainer asked with an embarrassed face.
Ash raised his eyebrow hearing that, same with his starter.
"Fine, do you have a pen?" Ray said with a sigh, he knows this redhead will haunt him if he doesn't sign it…
She quickly nodded and pulled out a pen, Rey quickly signed the book and handed it over to her.
Misty squealed while inspecting his signature.
"Rey, since when did you release a book?" Ash asked with disbelief, the Pallet Native had no idea that his neighbour had written a book!
Misty was the first one to snap out of her fanboying and looked at Ash with disbelief.
"You seriously don't know!?" The redhead asked with extreme disbelief.
"You don't know about Rey's achievements?" She asked him, fearing to hear the answer.
Ash saw how she was looking at him and huffed with annoyance.
"Well, I know he was studying under Professor Oak!" He said that while crossing his arms.
Still, Misty had a look of disbelief, just how ignorant is this kid?
"Ash, he discovered three new types of Pokemon! and wrote a guidebook on how to raise Magicarp before he was even ten!" Misty said with borderline stars in her eyes.
Ray could only grimace seeing how she was reacting…
"Magicarp? That doesn't sound impressive." Ash said with a frown, Magicarp is considered the most useless Pokemon! Completely ignoring Ray's other more important discovery…
"It's not just about Magicarp you doofus, it's what comes next! It's helping people understand and raise Gyarados, one of the most dangerous Pokemon in the world. Many fatalities come from Gyarados rampages, Ray's book increased people's survivability by over 30%!" Misty explained to the ignorant Pokemon trainer.
Ash's eyes widened hearing that, even he knows Gyarados!
But, hearing how Ray wrote a book on raising them? Did he raise a Gyarados?
While Ray can already imagine the question, he has not raised one yet. Still, the stuff he wrote is from anime he saw.
From bonds that allow evolution, to seeing how Magicarp can evolve into Gyarados from anger alone!
Once he showed the manuscript to Professor Oak, the old man was blown away by the simplicity of the idea behind it, Still, Ray thought it was a long shot, turns out it was not. Once again he used anime logic to his advantage and got money from it…
"Anyway enough about the book, Ash you are here for the Pokemon Gym?" Ray changed the theme and Ash very easily felt for it.
"Yes! Can you show me where it is!?" The Pallet native asked with an excited look on his face.
"Are you registered for the league?" Ray asked the obvious. Still, one will never know with the airhead…
"Yeah! I did it in Viridian!" Ash quickly nodded at him.
"I see, then you can challenge it. Come, follow me, I show you where the Gym is." Ray motioned to follow him.
While Misty just sighed and whispered under her breath "Boys… we didn't even book rooms in the Pokemon Centre…" She said with an exaggerated sigh, still following Ash, she wants her bike back after all!
After a few minutes of silent walking, they finally arrived at a building that looked like it was carved from a massive boulder.
While Ray and Misty just silently observed it, Ash on the other hand… walked forward towards the doors with an extremely excited pace.
Then he pushed the doors, meeting with complete darkness inside of the Gym, he, of course, was not dissuaded by the darkness.
"I came here for a Pokemon Gym battle!" The Pallet native said with an excited tone.
"I accept!" That moment lights turned on and in the middle of Rock Type battlefield was Brock the Pewter City Gym Leader.
Ray rolled his eyes at the dramatic teenager, both he and Misty walked over to the viewer's seats while Ash rushed to the battlefield.
"So, is he ready?" Ray asked absentmindedly, he knew full well that Ash was not ready. But, then again, the butterfly effect or in this case, the Butterfree effect is in place since he is around. He already affected Gary, and maybe he affected Ash as well…
"As if, with Pokemon, he has no chance, he didn't even train them! Maybe this will serve him as a wake-up call." Misty said with a snort.
She only got a hum back from Ray, he already expected that. Still, this is a chance for him to see how strong are Brock's Pokemon.
"Expected as much, let's see now how he does…" He said with a lazy voice, both of his elbows were on his knees while his palms were holding his cheeks.
The battle was pretty much just like in canon, Ash uses his Pikachu while Brock calls out his Onix.
Ray narrowed his eyes, he doesn't remember much about the Original series as he watched those a long time ago, but still, he knows some key stuff, like where some rare Pokemon are, still…
He knows that Ash will forfeit his Pikachu soon.
The moment the battle started Ash ordered his starter to use Thundershock, Misty groaned next to Ray.
The attack did nothing to the Rock Snake Pokemon. A moment later Onix closed in wrapped its rocky body around the electrical mouse and started squeezing it…
Soon enough Ray remembered Ash forfeiting his Pokemon and the battle was over…
Wasn't it supposed to be a 2 vs 2?
'Wait! he forfeited the whole match? Is he that of moron!?'
Brock blinked for a second and then shrugged, he never fought someone this green!
The Gym Leader recalled his Rock Snake Pokemon and the match is over.
"Seriously Ash… you do realise that this is a two vs two match? And what's with Electric attacks on Ground-Type?" Ray asked his neighbour with an exaggerated sigh.
Ash sheepishly scratched the back of his neck…
"I-I kind of forgot about that!"
Ray sighed and pulled out a Potion.
"Here spray it on Pikachu." He handed over the healing spray to Ash.
"Oh, thanks!" Ash took the potion and started to spray on his starter which was in his hands before.
"Anyway, Brock are you up for another challenger?" Ray asked the teenager who shrugged, his Onix was in perfect condition.
"Sure, I hope you are better prepared than Ash." The Gym Leader shrugged once more, and Ash looked somewhat embarrassed, this was not how he envisioned his first Gym Battle!
"Great! I am Ray from Pallet Town same as Ash over there." He introduced himself to the Gym Leader.
Brock's eyes widened hearing his name, his casual behaviour shifted, and he got serious.
"I see, you know the rules?" Brock seriously asked.
"Yeah, two versus two."
The Gym Leader nodded, he was happy that someone read the pamphlets…
Brock's younger brother who was the referee before got back into the position.
"This is an official 2 vs 2 Gym battle between challenger Ray from Pallet Town and Brock the Pewter Gym Leader, only the challenger is allowed to substitute! Now Begin!
"Geodude, I choose you!" Brock released his first Pokemon.
For a second Ray glanced at the Rock/Ground type, The Pokemon was well taken care of, but that was it.
You could say that it's well taken care of wild Geodude with minimal training.
Still, after seeing Brock's Onix Ray decided on his Pokemon for this battle.
"Pidgey, Let's go!"
The Tiny Bird Pokemon manifested on the battlefield.
Brock and Misty raised their eyebrows seeing this…
At least Flying types can deal some damage, unlike Electric types...
"Are… you sure?" The Pewter Gym Leader asked. Maybe he is overthinking and this was not the 'Ray' he heard about.
"Oh, I am very sure…" Ray said with a smirk." Let's start this! Pidgey! Into the air!"
His Flying/Normal Type nodded and jumped into the air, and with a single beat of his wings, the Pokemon was in the air.
"Very well!" Brock just shrugged and accepted it, his little brother nodded and raised both flags starting the battle officially.
"You can have the first move," The Rock-Type gym leader said to Ray with crossed arms.
All he got was a smirk, the older teenager just had a gut feeling that it was the wrong thing to say.
"My thanks! Pidgey, let's start with Agility!"
The Tiny Bird Pokemon glowed blue for a second.
"This is not good! Geodude use Rock Throw!"
The Rock Pokemon quickly started to throw rocks from the battlefield at Pidgey.
Ray just continued to smirk after seeing the speed of those rocks.
"Use Quick Attack to dodge then follow by Steel Wing!"
Tiny Bird Pokemon followed the orders to the ladder and accelerated with Quick Attack then its Wings started to glow in metallic colour.
Brock that moment realised Ray was more than prepared to face him!
"Quick! Geodude use Defense Curl!" The Pewter City Gym Leader said with a panicked voice, he should have known that Ray Pokemon would have some moves which would be effective against Rock Types!
The Rock Pokemon quickly curled and a white aura surrounded the Pokemon.
But, it wasn't enough as Pidgey rammed its steel-coated wings into the Rock/Ground Type.
A loud sound of Super Effective spread through the battlefield, the Rock Pokemon was sent flying several metres.
'Damn! That's one powerful strike! That Pidgey built up momentum with that Quick Attack!' Brock through with a few drops of sweat going down his forehead.
"That was great Pidgey, now one more time!"
The Flying/Normal Type nodded and circled the battlefield before accelerating once more.
"Not so fast! Geodude use Rollout to dodge!"
The Pewter Gym Leader ordered his Rock/Ground Type with haste, Geodude quickly snapped out and started to roll, something which comes naturally to this Pokemon.
"In that case increase your speed with Agility! Then Steel Wing!"
'Damn! After this, I will teach Geodude Rock Polish!' Brock slightly bit his lower lip in frustration as he saw Pidgey connected with rolling Geodude sending it flying into one of the rock formations of the Battlefield.
Knocking out the Rock Pokemon.
"Geodude is unable to battle! This round goes to Pidgey!" Brock's younger brother raised one of the flags of Ray's side.
Brock returned his Pokemon with a sigh, then pulled out his other Pokeball.
"Your Pidgey caught me by surprise! But, you still need to beat my Onix to get the badge!" The Pewter Gym Leader threw his Pokeball and Rock Snake Pokemon manifested on his side.
Pidgey narrowed his eyes for a second, the Tiny Bird Pokemon knew that this Pokemon was the threat his trainer had worried about.
"Don't think I am not prepared for this Brock!" Once more Ray said with a smile.
"Then, let's see it!"
"Onix use Rock Throw!" The Pewter Gym Leader started first this time.
"Pidgey started dodging with Agility!"
The Flying/Normal Pokemon speed once more increased and the bird quite casually dodged the stones.
Brock furrowed his eyebrows seeing that, his Onix doesn't have that many ranged attacks, to begin with! Yet, the Pidgey got even faster!
"Now fly closer and use Toxic!"
The Tiny Bird Pokemon accelerated after hearing the command.
The Pewter City Gym Leader's eyes widened upon hearing that!
"Onix quickly dodge that!" He commanded his Rock Snake Pokemon out of panic. Yet, the Rock/Ground beast was too big, to properly dodge attack from such a small opponent.
Moments later, Pidgey opened its beak and released a stream of Poison at Onix poisoning him in the process.
'Damn! He wants to wear us down!' Brock furrowed his eyebrows.
"Don't let up Onix! He is close use Slam!"
The large rock snake roared and moved its body trying to slam its massive weight on the small bird.
"Your Onix is too slow! Pidgey dodge with Quick Attack, then use Steel Wing!"
Pidgey easily flew out of the way of the incoming Rock Snake body, then its wings started to glow and the Tiny Bird Pokemon slammed them into Onix Head.
What followed next was the sound of a super-effective attack hitting its mark.
Brock nearly growled seeing that, as Onix's head moved back from pain.
"Onix! Once Pidgey is close use your Headbutt to intercept!" The Gym Leader was pulling straws there as he had no idea how to deal with the very slippery Flying/Normal type!
"Don't stop Pidgey, Quick Attack into Steel Wing!"
The Tiny Bird Pokemon saw the incoming Onix head and moved out of the way, then once more accelerated into the Rock/Ground type from the side.
Another Super Effective attack hit its mark, making Onix roar painfully, then poison kicked in and the Rock Snake Pokemon suffered even more.
Ray already noticed that the Gym Leader's Pokemon is on the last 'leg', while his Pidgey is barely winded.
He was somewhat disappointed with how easy this was, but then again Brock's gym is not supposed to be extremely difficult, it's meant for newbies and freshly caught Pokemon to get a hang of things…
"Let's finish this Pidgey! Use Steel Wing one more time!" Ray ordered with an excited voice, he could already feel the Badge in his hand!
"WAIT! I forfeit my Onix! It's your win!" Pewter Gym Leader's words shocked the attacking Pidgey the most, the Pokemon accidentally headbutted Rock Snake Pokemon.
Ray was shocked at first, but then he grimaced seeing Pidgey nearly crying from pain.
So, he quickly recalled his Flyer. And Brock returned his Onix.
The end was... anticlimactic...
