Chapter 9

Before Ray left Pewter City the next morning he went to the general store and stocked up enough food for over a week.

This is going to be the first time he won't be sleeping in a proper bed for over a week.

So, he needed to make sure he had everything he needed to not be anywhere near civilisation.

From potions to any other miscellaneous items, eventually, he picked up some rubber balls too, and he finally going to start training his Magicarp.

Since he has the Pokenav he selected the best routes and where he is going to do his pit stops.

Well, there is only one proper route but he selected to move slightly away from the main route, close to a body of water so that he could train his Magicarp.

Same time he was quite disappointed after checking what kind of Pokemon he could catch on this route, the majority of the Pokemons recorded in this area are the ones he already has or has seen.

From Geodude to Nidorans… he could only lament on fact that he overdid it and now he is going to spend a week encountering the same enemies.

'Oh well, more training it is then…' With that though he started walking towards Mount Moon.

~~~
Thankfully it was not that boring walk, Ray encountered some trainers which he beat quite easily he allowed the majority of his team to experience some battles.
Apart from that, he allowed at least one of his Pokemon to walk or fly in Pidgey's case with him, Walking is good exercise too, well he had to stop Rhyhorn a couple of times to not just charge the first thing he saw.
By the time of late afternoon, Ray finally arrived at the first water body big enough for Magicarp training.
But, first, he released his other five Pokemon.
"Right, a short training session." All of his Pokemon instantly focused on what he was about to say.
"Pidgey will be training with Onix." The massive rock snake perked slightly and looked at the small bird Pokemon.
He is going to train with that? Well if his trainer says it's fine then it's fine…
While the Tiny Bird Pokemon smirked hearing that, finally! His chance to beat down a Rock Snake!
"Pidgey's goal is to strengthen its moves while Onix's goal is to increase your reaction time and develop means to fight a smaller opponent." He explained before moving on.
"While Charmeleon will be fighting Rhyhorn, your goal is to strengthen your fire, so you will be using your Fire-type moves only, while Rhyhorn will be training your speed and reaction time."
Ray wanted Rhyhorn to start developing his mind, as otherwise, he would never evolve into Rhydon.
"While you Nidorino I am going to teach you some poison moves." He finished his explanation while moving his gaze towards the Poison Pin Pokemon.
The Poison-type slowly nodded, the more ways to deal with opponents the better!
Once he explained the plan for today everyone moved to face their opponents.
Pidgey moved into the air while Onix waited to see how the little bird was going to attack him.
Soon enough he realised what going on! The little bird accelerated at the Rock Snake Pokemon and Steel Wing smashed into Onix and he felt the pain!
Now he knows the purpose of this training and it won't going to be easy.
Seeing that training has started between Onix and Pidgey, Ray looked at Charmeleon and Rhyhorn who started their own thing.
Rhyhorn would dash at Charmeleon who will dodge and use Fire-Type moves like Fire Punch on his side.
"Rhyhorn when Charmeleon is out of the way you must stop and quickly track him down," Ray commented on the performance of Spikes Pokemon.
The Ground/Rock type slowly nodded, he still wants to constantly charge at… well charge!
Ray understood that the rhino Pokemon was fighting his instincts which he would need to overcome to progress.
His gaze then went to Onix who was getting frustrated with constantly getting faster Tiny Bird Pokemon.
"Onix! Your head is not the only weapon! Your whole body is made from stones! So, use them!" Ray shouted at the Rock Snake Pokemon.
The Rock/Ground type stopped for a second and processed what his trainer just said.
Seconds later Ray noticed changes in how Onix moves, he could only smile.
Most of the rock snakes have heavily focused on their heads which in turn makes them forget that their whole body is made from stone, any piece of it could hurt a lot.
And so Onix started to use more of its whole body, only it didn't do much as Pidgey is quite nibbled with its dodging ability.
'I should teach him Double Team, the more evasive moves, the more he knows the better.'
With that thought in mind, Ray turned towards the body of water and pulled out Magicarp's Pokeball.
He casually threw it and the Fish Pokemon was released into it.
The water type landed in the water turned around and looked at his trainer with expectation.
Ray could only smirk having such an eager Pokemon! They are the best to work with!
"Hello Magicarp, my name is Ray and I am your trainer! Are you ready to become a stronger water type ever?" The Junior Professor already knows how to make his Pokemon all pumped up for training.
Knowing how to inspire your Pokemon is quite a good method of making more progress as the creatures will give 110% more effort.
Just like now…
The Fish Pokemon started splashing excitedly and waiting for orders.
'Right, first Tackle then Double Edge… what a large lineup…' A sarcastic chuckle escaped his lips as he thought about the 'massive' lineup of moves this Pokemon could learn.
Nonetheless, training Magicarp is easy, only time is needed.
"Good, so your goal is very simple…" Ray pulled out a rubber ball and threw it into the water.
"Your goal is to tackle it with as much force as possible the further you can tackle it the better."
Hearing the order, the fish Pokemon started accelerating and trying to send the ball flying…
What Ray saw made him slightly grimace, he was expecting somewhat of a push, but Magicarp barely moved the ball.
'Right, it doesn't even know Tackle…'
"Try again this time use everything you got." The Fish Pokemon trainer commanded him, and next time there was slightly better.
Ray continued to watch a couple more times before focusing on Nidorino.
It was time to teach some Poison-type moves!
He can't wait to teach him Venoshock, and Poison Jab. With such a lineup once his Poison Pin Pokemon evolves into Drill Pokemon, then it will be a beast!
With the added attribute of Ground-type, he can teach STAB Ground moves like Earth Power, Earthquake, then some Fighting-type moves which he will expand, followed by a couple of elemental moves and he will have a powerful Allrounder.
~~~

As Ray was instructing the impatient Nidorino, he heard a loud thud.

He followed the sound and saw his Onix drop on the ground with swirls in his eyes.

Next to Rock Snake Pokemon Pidgey landed, while Ray could see the Tiny Bird Pokemon's expression he could see from the way it was standing that the Pokemon was proud of his achievement.

The Flying/Normal puffed his chest for a second before a blinding light consumed the flyer.

At that moment everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at evolution.

Ray saw the bird growing in size, now the bird was st least half of his size.

Once the light died down the Bird Pokemon spread its wings and introduced himself to the world.

"PIDGEOTTO!"

Everyone quickly went over to congratulate them, Ray just shook his head realising what was going on.

The bird was holding back evolution until he beat the Rock Snake Pokemon.

'I guess trauma from headbutting Onix by accident…'

The Junior Professor remembered how Pidgey back then by accident headbutted Brock's Onix…

A grimace appeared on his face for a second, even though it was not him who had hurt it should have hurt alot…

"Nicely done Pidgeotto," Ray said as he walked over.

The bird puffed his chest, there was no way he was getting behind the evolution train!

The Junior Professor pulled out his Pokedex and scanned his Flyer.

[Pidgeotto]

[The Bird Pokemon]

[Type: Flying/Normal]

[Ability: Keen Eye]

[Gender: Male]

[Moves: Tackle, Sand-Attack, Quick Attack, Agility, Aerial Ace, Wing Attack, Protect, Toxic, Steel Wing]

No new moves, not that he expected new moves, which usually pop up in mid-battle evolution.

After checking that he pocketed his Pokedex and went over to pick up one of the revives.

Then he revived his Onix.

The Rock Snake Pokemon looked at the Flying/Normal type with more respect than ever.

The Rock/Ground type was not too surprised that the bird evolved he might even smugly think that it evolved because he had beaten him.

After the resurrection training has continued, this time Onix has a better chance of hitting and ends up knocking Pidgeotto down thanks to changes in size it was easier for the Rock Snake to land a hit.

Even Rhyhorn somewhat started to stop early and realised that Charmeleon had dodged him. Maybe hotter flames made him realise sooner?

While Nidorino was on the right path toward learning Poison Jab.

And of course, Magicarp was finally able to move the rubber ball after countless tries.

Ray is still trying to comprehend why the fish is struggling to push a rubber ball.

But, then again he stopped questioning the world he lives in now…

~~~
After training was done the Junior Professor walked a couple more hours until he spotted the place where he was going to camp for a day.
After eating and feeding his Pokemon he hit the sack.
While sleeping in the sleeping bag is okay it didn't beat the warm bed. Still, he needs to start getting over the discomforts as there will be the time that he will be en route for more than a week…
The next day was quite similar to the previous one except there were no evolutions.
Ray fought a couple of trainers, did some Pokemon training, and started teaching Pidgeotto Double Team, and Nidorino the Poison Jab.
And began instructing Onix on Steel-type moves with the help of his Pokemon.
His goal is to teach Iron Tail, once that is down he will focus on teaching Iron Head.
Onix with Iron Head will be a beast capable of turning boulders into brittle sand.
While his other Pokemon focused on just getting stronger since Ray can't focus on more than a few Pokemon at the same time.
On the third day on the road, Nidorino finally picked up Poison Jab. And from now on Ray started teaching Venoshock a very lethal move.
Its damage is doubled if the move is used on already poisoned Pokemon.
That's where Nidorino's already existing Toxic or its ability Poison Point comes into play.
Ray's goal is to make his future Nidoking into a beast, and this move is just one of several which will help him!
On the fourth day, Onix finally picked up how to feel Steel energy and was getting close to learning Iron Tail…
Ray needed to find a place with more boulders too.
After his Rock Snake Pokemon smashed them to pieces.
Thankfully he can finally see Mount Moon in the distance.
And it was a massive mountain…
He was still a day away from reaching it even…
On the fifth day, he arrived at the mountainside, Ray had the feeling that this mountain should hold some fighting types too, as they love such heights it's a challenge for them after all.
Ray pulled out his Onix Pokeball, This is going to be fun!
Going through a dark cave? Hell no! He would rather go through the mountain itself!
"Onix! Let's go!"
The Junior Professor threw his Pokeball and a massive towering Rock Snake manifested in front of him.
"We going to cross this mountain! Are you ready?"
The Rock/Ground type released a happy roar.
It seems it is this beast kind of thing!
