Chapter 12

'Well, this is something else!' Ray could not believe he got in touch with someone like the future supermodel from Unova!

Still, though, the girl is two years older than him and still nothing more than an aspiring Electric-type Pokemon Trainer.

Her getting in touch with him comes from nothing more than asking/inquiring about electric types.

Wondering why thought? Well, all he can think about is that asking someone of a similar age is easier than asking an adult.

Easy as that.

Still, Electric-types are one of the most difficult types to train. Anime never truly show how dangerous those Pokemon are.

Where Dragon-types are unruly and difficult to earn their respect. Electric types are simply dangerous. Quite a bit of trainers die from simple electrocution.

They regularly need to discharge their gathered electricity otherwise they will get sick or worse.

And of course, being affectionate with one can lead to a bad case of static hair, ruined clothes, and short-term visits to the hospital.

So, it's quite rare for a female to be into Electric- types, apart from her being the future Gym Leader of Nimbasa City. There are barely any famous Female Electric-type trainers.

Nonetheless, this was a good opportunity for Ray to earn some brownie points with a future supermodel.

While he has no interest in females yet, thanks to his body. It's only a matter of time. And once he wants a girlfriend he will have a chance with one of the top beauties in the world.

That moment with an 'evil grin' worthy of Gengar, the junior Professor started writing an e-mail to her with some less-known things about Electric types.

The world of Pokemon is all about Pokemon, and thankfully he knows quite a bit about them!

Well, he won't be sharing everything that is just silly, he is going to milk this as much as possible.

So, first, he wrote down several traits of Electric-type Pokemon and what to watch out for. Best diets, since Electric types, have specific tastes. Just like how Fire-types simply prefer spicy food at base.

How to progress with specific electric moves and the best way to train them.

Ray didn't mention his main secrets. Nope, those are staying with him for a considerable amount of time.

Nope, all he is giving away is something she will learn herself in not so distant future. All he does is shorten the time it will take for her to learn all this.

"And done. Hmm, this could earn me some money if I could post it." He thoughtfully said that to himself. A beginner's guidebook of some sort would do it.

But, in the end decided against that, he still has his Pokemon nature-based essay to finish, and he can write that after he is done with his nature essay.

Pressing the send button Ray decided to relax by thinking what he was going to do tomorrow.

Since he is in the city it's the perfect opportunity to check the general store. First, he needs to buy a Moon Stone for Nidorino.

Or in this case, it should be a massive mall, Cerulean is like the fourth biggest city in Kanto.

"Hmm, maybe they have a full set of stones? They usually sell the set cheaper instead of individual prices." By cheaper, it still going to cost around a whole year of a regular man's yearly wages.

While it sounds ridiculous, being a Pokemon trainer is just how it is. If you win your first Gym Battle you earn quite a bit. Enough to kick start a proper Pokemon journey.

In the end, Ray decides not to go to the gym for a battle the next day instead he will do some training and try to catch Horsea.

His only Water-type is Magicarp which is useless at the moment.

"Hmm, and buy some T.M.… too, Electric-type preferably."

Since he is facing a Water-type gym he would prefer the most effective move.

"But, then again, they will be most expensive in this city." Ray eye-rolled thinking that the majority well off kids buy Electric-type T.M to pass this gym…

Thinking for a bit he decided to buy other type T.M.'s here in case he was right about pricing.

For that, he went to check the web pages if the prices were posted there.

"...Yeah… no just no, this is ridiculous. Then again they probably have them priced this high by the request of the Cerulean Gym. The last gym leader before the girls was quite competent.

Unlike Brock's dad…" Ray eye-rolled remembering how quite cheaply he got Ice Beam compared to other city prices.

Then again some new trainers forget that Pokemon can use moves outside their element.

So, this one is not entirely on the Gym Leader.

"If this is so, then it means I can get some water moves cheaper in this place."

And just like he expected some of the water moves are cheaper in this city compared to other places.

For that, he opened the webpage for the Saffron City Department store. (It's big. In layman's terms, a skyscraper turned into a shop), and did some price comparisons.

Saffron as one expected from the biggest city in Kanto, has three times the selection of T.M's compared to Cerulean City.

It even has Steel-type, Dark-type, and Fairy-type T.M.s by this point. While the prices are huge they are affordable to an experienced Pokemon Trainer.

Still, he won't be buying those, instead, he went to check Water-type moves.

Using the sorting options he selected Water-type and saw a list of blue discs.

"Hmm… not by much but there is some difference…" He compared the most important moves like Hydro Pump and Rain Dance.

Rain Dance is a neat move with Thunder. A basic among basics combo moves. Even so, it's quite deadly if used properly.

So, he found that Rain Dance IS cheaper by a whole 1000 Pokedollars. That means he will be getting it. Since he can't seem to find Water Pulse. Followed by Earthquake.

A very powerful move for his Rhyhorn, Onix and future Nidoking not in such a distant future. After all, his Nidorino is only one evolution stone away.

They will love to use such a move.

And so making up his plans for tomorrow he decided to hit the sack.

~~~~~~Unova~~~~~~
On the other side of the Pokemon world where the time difference is around 8 hours a certain someone just received a notification that she got a new E-mail.
While she was ready to turn off her laptop since she was ready to move she decided to check it out who messaged her.
A few mouse clicks later, her eyes went wide like saucers.
"No way!"
"Hmm? What's with the reaction Eli?" Her roommate asked from her side of the room.
"Skyla! He answered back! He answered back with a bunch of tips on Electric-types!" The black-haired girl said with an extremely excited tone.
"Who answered back? Where have you been surfing the net?" The red-haired girl asked with even more confusion.
Her roommate rolled her eyes at her she already said yesterday what she had been doing! But, it would seem Skyla had already forgotten about it!
"I have been on Ray's forum yesterday reading a bunch of stuff and maybe...sorta asked for some tips?" She asked with a slightly embarrassed tone.
"Ray's? Who is that?" Skyla asked with an even more confused look on her face, this time the black-haired girl groaned from annoyance.
"There is only one Ray who has his forum on the Pokemon League's page! How much of an airheaded are you!?" The girl said with 'are you serious look.
"Wait! WAIT! A minute here!" The red-haired girl jumped out of her bed and walked over to her dormmates.
By this point, the other girl shows her laptop to her.
"It truly is him! You got tips from a real Pokemon Professor!" Skyla said with a jealous and disbelieving look.
"How did you were able to do that!?"
"Well… I maybe...kind of asked for it?" The black-haired girl embarrassingly scratched the back of her head while saying that. It's quite rare for trainers to get answers from other trainers on tips especially using such platforms like the Internet!
*Snort*
"Give me your laptop for a moment!" Skyla grabbed the laptop, which quite shocked her roommate, quickly took her seat next to her and started checking herself.
"Hey!"
"Come now Elesa! I don't believe that he answered your request so casually!" The red-haired girl said with an eye-roll so she quickly went to the Pokemon League page.
Like hell, she believes that one of the upcoming premier trainers and future Pokemon Professor will simply answer her friend's questions!
So, she ignored the upcoming Leagues and Tournaments instead she went to the forums section on the webpage.
Not surprisingly Ray has a whole section just for himself, which practically shows how insanely popular and influential he is.
Skyla realised that checking posts one by one is pointless. So, she decided to retract Elesa's footsteps by going to her friend's Pokemon trainer page.
The red-haired girl did another eye-roll seeing Elesa's profile picture.
It was the black-haired girl blowing a kiss. Maybe that's the reason why Ray gave some tips. A nice trainers card picture!?
After all, Pokemon Professors have access to more information than any other trainer. So, Ray probably saw the Pokemon Elesa has.
Her best friend only has 3 Pokemons all Electric-type, not even fully evolved! So, it would be weird for someone of that calibre to show interest.
Still, though Skyla followed the posts, there was not much to look at, as Elesa more or less reads posts and barely comments.
A few scrolling down is all needed for her to find what she wants.
"That's it? You commented on your Pokemon natures and asked for some advice to raise them?" The red-haired girl said that as she leaned back slightly. She was in complete disbelief.
After all, each of Ray's posts gets hundreds of replays, and she saw several other 'shameless' people asking for advice.
So, for him, it would look like Elesa is just one of them!
"I should change my trainer's picture into something similar to yours! If it's what it takes to get the advice from THE Junior Professor!" Skyla said the only thing she could do about the whole thing!
"W-What? Are you telling me the reason I got the email from him is that picture!?" Elesa said with a stutter. Is that all it takes?
"ANYWAY!" The black-haired girl took her laptop back closed the tab and went back to her e-mails.
"I am going to read his e-mail now if you excuse me!" The Electric Pokemon trainer said sharply.
"Like hell! I want to read it too!"
"Pfff! Aren't you planning to be a Flying-type Pokemon trainer!? There is nothing you could learn from this!" Elesa furiously pointed that out.
"And? That's an e-mail written by the same guy who discovered three new types of Pokemon and wrote a guidebook before he even started his Pokemon journey!" Skyla pointed out with an excited tone.
The black-haired girl just groaned she knew that her best friend wouldn't get off her back if she didn't show the e-mail.
"Fine, let's read this together." The Electric Pokemon trainer said with a resigned sigh.
The girl finally showed the laptop screen and pressed on the e-mail.
The reason why the girls didn't question the authenticity of the email is because it was sent through the official email address of the Junior Professor.
"This is like that book on Magicarp only supercharged, all the unnecessary stuff taken out," Skyla said after reading it.
"The book didn't have how to train Spark to Thunder stage by stage! Not all electric types even learn Thunderbolt naturally!" Elesa exclaimed excitedly.
Not all electric types learn moves like Thunderbolt naturally. After all, they all are different species and beings.
"Well duh! The book only had how to raise Magicarp into a Gyarados and not train it! This e-mail is a gold mine for any Electric-type Pokemon trainer!" The red-haired girl explained with a jealous sort of tone.
This will help Elesa immeasurably in training her Electric-type Pokemon.
"You might even have a chance to be a member of Elite Four in several years if you can follow these tips," Skyla said after thinking for a bit.
"Still though how you going to respond to him for this?" As the Flying-type trainer asked she enjoyed quite a bit of the look Elesa had when she asked about the reply.
"...H-How should I reply to him!? I have no idea!" The black-haired girl started panicking as she realised that she had to reply to the Junior Professor!
"Well, we can think of something?" Skyla didn't know if she should be amused or baffled that her best friend was out of words.
After all, she always had something to say! Not this time though.
~~~~~~Back in Kanto~~~~~~

The next morning the Pallet native descended to the main lobby to collect his Pokemon.

The Junior Professor's gaze eventually ended up on Chansey the Egg Pokemon. A Normal-type Pokemon with a massive amount of support moves. From Gravity to Heal Pulse.

Well, Gravity is more or less a Clefairy-line move but Chansey can learn it too.

In the end, he decided to try getting his hands on this Pokemon.

"Nurse Joy, do you think I could get a Chansey to join my team?" Ray asked the local Nurse of Cerulean Pokemon Centre.

His question earned him several blinks as the nurse tried to process what he just said.

"Ray you want a Chansey to join your team? It would be quite difficult. Chansey's evolutionary line is not known for fighting. And not many would like to be sent out into a Pokemon battle." She explained to him the obvious, as Chansey's offensive capacities are abysmal at best.

"I don't want her to fight. I am talking about working like a... field medic?" Ray clarified for her with a thoughtful look.

"Oh! OH! That's smart! As expected from you!" Nurse Joy that moment almost turned into a fangirl. Earning several looks from other people who had never seen the local nurse just starting to fangirl around some sort of boy they had never seen before.

Ray is quite thankful that a large majority of the world doesn't know his face. This will change with the Indigo Plateau Conference though.

Thankfully, for now, he can enjoy the incognito he has.

"Yes. The healing moves will be much appreciated, Nurse Joy." Ray smiled at her. The nurse nearly blushed at him.

The Junior Professor remembered how handy a healer can be in a field. He will save up money quite a bit on potions and other healing-related stuff.

So, what if he will have to waste a slot in his roster? With Chansey, his training will accelerate and he will be able to rotate his team more often.

"I-I see what I can do! I need to contact the Pokemon League they should give one to you." She said that with a smile and a knowing look.

In her mind, there should be no way that the Pokemon League would deny Ray's request!

"Many thanks, Nurse Joy I will be in the city for a couple of days."

"Don't worry, I will tell you as soon as I get the answer from the League." The pink-haired nurse said with a nod.

The Junior Professor nodded back as he collected his Pokeballs from the tray. He was ready to move and explore the city.

~~~
His first destination was the shopping district. Whereas Pewter City has few shops and buildings dedicated to shopping. Cerulean on the other hand had the entire Broadway for that.
Just for Pokemon…
First things first was to fill up his supplies. He doesn't know if he will get a Chansey or not.
So, on the safer side, it is better to have a full backpack of potions and other things.
After getting the general stuff, he went on more exciting shopping and that is checking T.M's!
The shop in Pewter was nothing more like a small kiosk converted into a shop. Something akin to a candy store they have in Japan.
Here in Cerulean, it's more like a small supermarket with rows of T.M's sorted according to the types.
The majority of them were one-time-use though. There are piles of those. It looked almost like those cheap shops where people fighting each other to grab stuff on sale.
While the multiple time use T.M's were quite different, encased in special containers similar to video game cases. They were placed neatly on shelves according to the type of the move.
Ray walked towards the biggest selection of the Pokemon moves. And that was Water-type. Cerulean is all about Water-types and one could see that just by looking at the amount of Water-type moves there were on shelves.
What he was quite surprised was to see moves like Water Pulse was around. He didn't see that one on the webpage.
"I guess… they don't care or try to keep the information up to date?" He said that to himself with a shrug. One thing for sure is that the Pokemon world is very much relaxed. Not quite lazy but relaxed.
No one here is lazy, being obsessed with Pokemon raising and training makes people have an active lifestyle which in turn makes them active. So, the majority of the population is quite fit. But, no one here tries to be on top of specific things.
Ray probably is the only person in this weird world who can see things differently thanks to being someone who came from a different world.
Nonetheless, he prefers this way. So, instead of buying Rain Dance, he decided to buy the offensive move Water Pulse instead of support one. Once his Pokemon have grasped the offensive one then they could learn the supportive one without the need of T.M.
After all the basis between Water Pulse and Rain Dance is quite similar.
Where one shoots a ball of compressed water at the enemy. The other one is where one shoots a charged-up ball of water energy into the sky creating rain as support.
The basis of this move is quite similar. It's all about water energy manipulation in the form of a ball.
Once he got the Water-type move he started to explore in earnest, seeing that the webpage info was quite outdated.
In the end, he decided to stick with Earthquake as he would be seeing other stores in other cities. Especially in Celadon City and Saffron City. The top two cities in the Kanto Region.
The selection over should be even better than here.
"It will be 19 thousand sir." The young cashier girl said after scanning the T.M.s.
Ray nodded pulled out his fat wallet and took out the golden card.
The cashier girl's eyes slightly widened upon seeing the card. Seeing a golden card is nothing new. But, there is a difference between those cards.
One, this one had Pokemon League insignia. Meaning that this kid was with Pokemon League.
An… employe…
Now, how many kid employees does the Pokemon League have? To her knowledge, there is only one. The League doesn't employ kids as they usually go on their adventures by that point. But, there is one kid who is very much famous but his face is still unknown to the majority of people.
Who is 'employed' by the Pokemon League, thus connecting the dots in her mind.
Her eyes widened in realisation before she could say anything Ray saw her expression, and he put his finger on his lips. Motioning for her to stay quiet.
As the bank was processing the payment the Junior Professor looked around the shop there were quite a bit of people, and the majority of them were teenagers.
He doesn't want to be on the receiving end of a human stampede.
Eventually, the payment was done and the cashier handed over his golden card.
She then softly started speaking with him as the girl realized that he was going incognito.
"Can I get your autograph?" She asked with a slightly embarrassed tone, as she pulled out the guidebook he wrote.
After all, she lives in a city that is 'slightly' obsessed with Water-type Pokemon.
"Sure thing," Ray said with a casual nod.
The girl smiled at him before handing over the book and the pen to him.
Ray quickly signed the book and handed it over back to her.
The moment the girl received the book she was on cloud nine and it was a sign for the Junior Professor to leave.
After putting the two T.M.'s away Ray went over to get something to eat.
The best way to experience the city's culture is through its local dishes.
And since it's a city more or less focused on Water-type Pokemon, he noticed that restaurants here are more or less water cuisine based.
~~~

Once the Pallet Native finished his meal and got some sightseeing done, he decided to return to matters at hand.

Catching a Horsea, for that Ray had to find the beach.

But, this is where he realised an error in his thinking. Horsea by nature is an underwater type of Pokemon.

Meaning that he needs either to dive or to fish.

And for that, it's best to talk with some locals.

Ray scanned the beach with his gaze, instead of going where people go for a swim he went where people fish instead.

While Cerulean city is all about water types, it's not a seaside city. More or less it's a city that has quite a large lake which in turn has a connection to an ocean via a channel.

So, that means it doesn't have waves like the ones in the Ocean or any sea currents... so, this means he can by all means dive in more safely and not fear being washed away somewhere far away.

But that's plan B, plan A is fishing first.

"Excuse me, sir." Ray approached one of the fishermen he saw.

"Hmm? How can I help you, young man?" The man in his mid ages asked curiously while his gaze didn't leave the floater in the water.

"I was wondering if you know the best spot for fishing Horsea?" Ray curiously asked.

"Horsea… huh...well this area here is heavily infested with Goldeen while the area over there had an increase in Tentacools. I have caught some Horsea's this week but it's quite a rare catch. I would say 1 out of 20?" The man gave an honest answer after thinking for a bit.

Another reason why the Junior Professor likes Pokemon World… everyone is more… positive, maybe the reason for that is that they are… more easygoing or relaxed. Well, it doesn't matter. All it matters they are not that negative and willing to share stuff like that.

"I see… I suppose I should get some fishing done then." Ray said with a sigh, it would seem he might be fishing for some time then.

"Haha! If you need some tips youngster I am willing to share! Anything for an inspiring future fisherman!" The older man grinned at the Pallet Native.

'Or maybe not… this world has its weirdos too.' Ray sweatdropped. He remembered the video game which had those weird fishermen, with extremely weird dialogues.

"Thanks for the advice, sir. I will go now, I still need to get a fishing rod." The Junior Professor thanked the man before leaving quickly.

His next destination is a fishing store…

And finding one is quite easy. It was no wonder that Misty was a fishing nerd in a way. When a portion of a city is dedicated to fishing, diving, and swimming. One simply develops an interest in that.

'Hmm, I do have some space in my backpack. So, I could get the goggles and that small mouth-breathing thing.' Ray thought to himself as he saw the stuff on sale.

He will prepare for plans A and B, not wasting by walking back and forth.

So, quick shop later and spending less than 400 poke dollars on everything needed for fishing and diving, Ray was ready to start his fishing 'carrier'.

Going slightly away from the very same fishermen just outside the city, slightly north of the Cerulean city.

Ray pulled out his brand-new fishing rod and started fishing. Thankfully he does have some experience from his previous life.

But, before that, he called forth his Nidorino for assistance.

"Nidorino. I will be fishing, the moment I pull out a Pokemon be ready for battle, Alright?" The Junior Professor explained to his Poison-type Pokemon.

The Poison Pin Pokemon slowly nodded, this was the first time his trainer was doing something like this. So, the Pokemon has no idea what to expect.

Soon, enough Nidorino realized that it was a...waiting game...something he didn't like one bit!

Nonetheless, the Poison-type understood that it's probably some sort of training as well!

And so, the fishing started. Nidorino quickly enough got bored for real and ended up sleeping…

But, then finally something got Ray's hook and the Pokemon trainer quickly pulled his fishing rod.

There was some excitement in the Junior Professor's face. Before he saw what did he was hooked.

"..."

"..."

"Magi, Magi, Magicarp!"

Ray groaned, not wasting time with this he unhooked the Fish Pokemon before sending it back into the water.

"You can continue with your nap." The Pallet Native said with an eye roll.

Nidorino simply nodded and returned to his sleeping. Not understanding Ray's sarcasm…

Soon enough the Poison Pin Pokemon was sleeping.

By this point, Ray simply ignored his Poison-type and used a different hook and bait this time.

This time the pull came much sooner and once again Ray pulled out a Magicarp.

Rinse and repeat, the Junior Professor released the Fish Pokemon and set up another bait.

The Magicarp thing continued for some time before he finally pulled out a Goldeen.

"Nidorino use Double Kick!" The Poison-type quickly lunged and double-kicked the Water-type back into the water.

With a huff, the Poison Pin Pokemon returned to his spot after dealing with the Golden Fish Pokemon.

"Well, after 8 Magicarps something more useful," Ray said with a sigh. Still, he doesn't see the Goldeen as a worthy Pokemon, after it's almost like an aquarium or pet-level Pokemon.

Even its evolution Seeking is just a slightly bigger Goldfish…

After sending the Goldeen away Ray prepared another hook. If it's another useless Pokemon he is ready to change the location.

And so without much fanfare, he threw the line into the water and waited.

A few minutes later he felt another pull. Then Ray pulled the rod he saw the Pokemon.

It was a Tentacool.

Soon enough the Water/Poison-type opened its mouth and shot Poison Sting at Ray but Nidorino intercepted the attack and rushed forward with Take Down.

Sending the Jelly Fish Pokemon back into the water without much fanfare.

"Well… I guess we should change the location. Going further away from the city might do the trick." As Ray said that he started collecting his fishing gear. His Poison Pin Pokemon was all up for that!

~~~
In the end, Ray didn't capture anything of worth, and he wasted 6 hours in this pointless fishing.
He decided to return to what he does best and that is researching.
But first, he needs to train some of his Pokemon and teach the new moves.
Thankfully he was away from the city which means he can unleash his Pokemon without worrying about the damage.
First, he pulled out Earthquake's T.M. and put Rhyhorn's Pokeball in the middle of it.
The technical machine glowed for a second showing that the move had been taught to the Ground/Rock type.
"Nice! Now let's try it out!" Ray put the T.M. back before calling Rhyhorn out.
With a burst of white light, the Spikes Pokemon manifested in front of him.
"Rhyhorn are you ready for some training?" The Junior Professor asked about the Ground/rock type.
All the Pallet Native got back from his Pokemon was several excited nods.
"Good for this one you will face Nidorino." As Ray said that he motioned for the Poison Pin Pokemon to walk forward and face Rhyhorn.
Soon enough they both were facing each other.
This was not the first time these two have battled, and multiple times already they knocked each other out.
"This training will be slightly different as Rhyhorn will be testing new moves. So, be ready for it Nidorino." As Ray explained he was ready for it himself. As in taking some distance from them.
"Good now, Rhyhorn use Earthquake!" The Junior Professor ordered his Spikes Pokemon.
The Ground/Rock-type went on his hind legs and then slammed his front legs infused with Ground energy down.
What Ray expected was slightly more earth-shaking but what he got was a few cracks on earth around Rhyhorn.
"Hmm. More training is needed it would seem." Ray said with crossed hands. Well, his Pokemon has the brain size of a walnut so, the Pallet Native hadn't put too much trust in him being able to nail the attack on the first try.
"Rhyhorn try sending the energy towards your enemy not just stomping for the sake of stomping," Ray said as he realised what his Pokemon was doing.
"Now try again."
Once more the Ground/Rock-type went on his hind legs and slammed down his front ones with Ground energy.
This time the effect was much more evident as the earth started to shake and slam into Nidorino who was before this looking at the Spikes Pokemon with amusement.
"Nido!" The Poison Pin Pokemon just received super-effective damage.
*Sigh*
"Didn't I tell you to watch out?" Ray deadpanned at his Poison-type Pokemon.
Nidorino got up with slightly shaky legs ready to continue with the fight.
The Junior Professor was slightly impressed by the power of the Earthquake. But, then again it's a STAB move for Rhyhorn.
Any Ground or Rock-type move will do more damage if it's done by a Pokemon of the same type.
"Good that you are up Nidorino. Rhyhorn in this fight you will use Earthquake and Nidorino will use Double Kick now begin."
As Ray instructed the fight. Once again Rhyhorn was ready to use Earthquake but Nidorino lunged forward jumping and midair turning around and kicking the Spikes Pokemon with a super-effective attack.
Once again the Pallet Native was impressed how quickly the Poison Pin Pokemon picked up the whole jumping tactic.
All in all, he is satisfied with his Poison-type's instincts for battle.
On the other hand, Rhyhorn was more… hot-headed. The moment he was not allowed to perform his moves he started to get more erratic.
As Nidorino was delivering his super-effective kicks the Spikes Pokemon forgot the previous orders of using only Earthquake and started going on the offensive with the most instinctual move.
Horn Attack.
"Quick Nidorino dodge to the side with a jump and then use Double Kick!" As Ray quickly ordered his Poison Pin Pokemon to dodge.
The Ground/rock type single-mindedly rushed forward with his charge.
The Poison-type barely dodged the charge as he was quite close to Rhyhorn. Once the dodge was successful Nidorino turned around slammed with his hind legs and made the Spikes Pokemon lose balance for a moment.
"Rhyhorn STOP!" Ray with a serious tone ordered the Ground/Rock-type to stop.
Which was sort of success as the Spikes Pokemon Horn slammed into a tree before turning around and looking apologetic.
'The bouts of mindless charging are getting less and less frequent. This is an indication that the Pokemon is getting smarter, however, Rhyhorn still needs to get over that panic when his moves are getting interrupted.' Ray thoughtfully looked at his Pokemon.
"Rhyhorn we need to learn different ways to use Earthquake." The Junior Professor said that he still was thinking of ways to do that.
"Instead of getting on hind legs why don't you just lift one of your legs and gather Ground energy then slam it down?" The Pallet Native explained as he had one of his hands on his chin he was thinking of different ways to channel power in Earthquake style.
Instead of listening to his Trainer commands the Ground/Rock-type looked at him with a confused gaze.
'Right...Walnut size brain.' Ray internally sighed remembering that fact.
"Lift one of your legs." The Junior Professor ordered his Pokemon.
Rhyhorn listened to him and did so with one of his frontal legs.
"Now channel Ground energy into it." Once more Ray instructed his Pokemon who did as he was said.
Moments later there was a slight glow of light brown energy around the Ground/Rock-type Pokemon.
"Now slam it down on the ground with the intention of hitting Nidorino over there!" Ray pointed at his Poison-type.
"And you Nidorino be ready to dodge!" The Junior Professor quickly ordered his Pokemon.
As Rhyhorn received his orders he slammed his leg down.
What happened next was similar to Earthquake but not quite there.
'This was Earth Power!' Ray thought with a slightly shocked look.
'Or at least it will be with some more training.'
"Not bad Rhyhorn! But, that's a completely different move. Nonetheless, we will master it!" The Pallet Native said happily.
"Now let's try this again! Rhyhorn try it again! Only this time with more force!" The Junior Professor said as he was pumping up his Pokemon.
The Ground/Rock-type with extra vigour repeated the previous action and Nidorino was waiting patiently and ready to dodge.
Only the Poison Pin Pokemon didn't foresee the speed of this attack.
As with the stomp to the ground, the crack rapidly approached the Poison-type. Nidorino tried to jump but the ground erupted with Ground-type energy like some sort of Volcano showing that it was a successful move called Earth Power.
This attack was super effective on Nidorino who was immediately knocked out. After all the move packed quite a punch and is even considered a famous move used by Nidoking…
*Sigh*
"Nidorino return."
Ray recalled his knocked-out Pokemon, here he was thinking of practising Earthquake but he ended up teaching his Pokemon Earth Power.
Two moves for one price… a very good deal indeed!
"Charmeleon! You are up!"
With a casual throw of another Pokeball Ray's Starter has manifested in front of him.
"Charmeleon. Some practice against Rhyhorn what do you say?" Ray asked with a smile. Knowing full well that his Starter is always ready for a brawl.
The Flame Pokemon smirked at his trainer showing his claws. They are ready.
"Good now let's start! Rhyhorn you can only use Earthquake and that other move!" Ray instructed his Ground/Rock-type.
Then he looked at his Starter.
"And you Charmeleon use Flamethrower while trying to dodge the attacks!"
The Fire-type nodded at his trainer and showed a resolute expression.
Moments later the training session began and Rhyhorn went on his hind legs and slammed down.
The next moment earth shook and Charmeleon tried to dodge but he was hit by the Super Effective Ground attack.
'Hmm, this move is quite dangerous no wonder it has a 100% hit ratio in the game.' Ray thought with a frown.
Before can Charmeleon get up Earth Power slams into the Fire-type knocking him out just like that.
"...That one is going to leave a mark on his pride," Ray said with a sigh as he returned his Starter.
This just shows how strong are these two moves.
"Well, for now, why don't you practise on the boulders?" The Junior Professor offered to his Pokemon who nodded and focused on the first boulder he could find.
While the Ground/rock type was shaking the earth. Ray summoned his other three Pokemon.
With a burst of light Pawniard, Trapinch and Pidgeotto manifested in front of him.
"Time for some training!"
All three Pokemon nodded with some excitement. Well, except Pawniard who had a cool look. The Dark/Steel-type simply nodded.
"For Pidgeotto is quite simple, we going to practise channelling Flying-type energy through the body. This way we can progress towards Air Cutter and Brave Bird." As the Pallet native explained to his Flyer he then looked at Pawniard.
"For you Pawniard we going to teach the Normal-type move called Slash, it's a very neat move with high critical chance probability," Ray explained his plan for the Sharp Blade Pokemon before looking at the Ground-type.
"And you Trapinch… you will be learning how to walk faster," Ray said with a smile.
The Ant Pit Pokemon slightly moved its big head. Trying to understand what his trainer means by 'walking fast'?
And so, the rest of the Pokemons started their training until they got tired.
The first ones to get tired were the new additions to the team, then it was Rhyhorn who had a couple of battles beforehand and for the last it was Pidgeotto.
Once the training was done Ray revived the knocked-out Pokemon and got them some food.
Food is best after a long day of training before starting to move back to the city.
This time his goal is to rest. It was quite a weird day, to say the least.
At least it was sort of rewarding in some way. His Rhyhorn benefited the most.
'Earthquake and Earth Power are two powerful moves.' The Junior Professor thought to himself as he was walking back to Cerulean.
He needs to find some ways to counter these moves.
~~~

"Good news Ray!" Nurse Joy cheerfully said to the Pallet Native trainer as she took his Pokeballs.

"I got a response from the League, they said they will send one of the Chansey over to you in a few days. While I could give one of the local ones here from Cerulean city. But, none of them seem to be interested in travelling." For a second the pink-haired nurse said with a disappointed and even sad tone.

Ray realized that she was quite sad that she could not help him more…

"It's fine Nurse Joy I will be staying here for a few more days. I decided to fish for some Pokemon and it's quite... a time-consuming thing." He wanted to say annoying and boring but he rather not. The City is infested by the fishing-obsessed people.

"I see! Very well! I am happy that you are partaking in some of the local activities!" The nurse clapped her hands when she heard that Ray was doing some local activities like fishing!

"In the meantime, I will take care of your Pokemon."

"My thanks. I will pick them up in the morning." As Ray thanked the Nurse he walked to his room it was time to do some research.

Once he was back in his room he started up his laptop and accessed the Pokemon Rangers database.

What he found is that the Tentacool population is growing rapidly, but nothing concrete on Horsea in the lake north of Cerulean City.

After checking Ranger's databanks he went to the official Professors lounge. A webpage where the Professor chats.

Over here spend time reading on Horseas. He never read alot on them before. Most likely he thought that he could easily catch one. He spends more time reading on Growlithe than on the Dragon Pokemon.

Yeah, Horsea is a 'Dragon Pokemon'. Though only becoming a part Dragon-type by the time of its last evolution.

'Hmm. Let's fish it the old-fashioned way.' Ray started looking for what kind of food taste Horsea's like. Using favourite taste as bait should do the trick instead of pre-made bait which is most likely used to catch Fish Pokemon like Magicarp and Goldeen evolution-line.

After reading on the bait Ray typed down the type of tastes these Pokemon like. Amusing and weird it sounds like everything in this world is berry-based.

So, all he needs is to mix several types of berries and use them as bait…

Then he checked his emails and found an e-mail from someone he sort of expected but same time he did not any time soon.

He after all gave someone some good tips. So, people should be hyped over to try these tips out.

Not only that, the girl responded less than two hours after he sent the email.

After reading it Ray could feel the awkwardness in the words. He didn't imagine that from someone who will be the supermodel not in such a distant future.

Nonetheless, he does like the honesty of this world. The girl didn't expect that Ray would answer like that. So, she was quite embarrassed. Still, she did thank him properly.

'Now let's see how much this will affect the state of Unova. As far as I know, she massively affected her birth city turning it into an entertainment hub.' The Junior Professor was quite curious as he would go to Unova a few years from now.

As it's quite far, it's better if he visits the closest regions first before going to the other side of the globe.

Thinking for a bit Ray decided to send some encouraging words before returning to writing his essay.

~~~~~~Next Morning~~~~~~
As the Pallet Native was done with breakfast and feeding his Pokemon he left the Pokemon Centre and was ready to use his new fishing method of catching Horsea.
Only that he got face to face with someone from his 'birth town'.
"Ray? Nice! I finally caught up!" The Junior Professor stopped in his tracks after hearing that voice.
It was Gary Oak.
Ray turned around and saw Gary dressed up in travelling clothes.
"Gary. I thought you would be in front of me since I am taking my time with travelling." The Pallet native asked his other neighbour curiously.
"As if! I am taking my time too! Now that I think about it travelling by foot takes more time I saw many more Pokemon this way!"
The way Gary said that sounded like he understood something incredibly important like he uncovered one of the greatest mysteries of the Pokemon world.
"I see… I suppose you learned something from this." Ray just shrugged at him.
'Do kids this age are always this dumb? Or it's just these two idiots from Pallet Town?' The Junior Professor internally facepalmed.
"Yeah! Wait! You making fun of me, don't you!? ANYWAY! let's have a battle!" Gary said that as he pulled out a Pokeball, brushing aside the previous comments on him.
"A battle? You just arrived in the city. Don't your Pokemon need rest?" Ray asked with a slightly raised eyebrow.
"I haven't done any battles today and my team is fresh! Let's have a 4 vs 4 what do you say?" Gary asked him while spinning a Pokeball on his right-hand index finger.
*Sigh*
"Sure thing let's go." Ray motioned for him to follow to the back of the Pokemon Centre where multiple fighting arenas are.
A few moments later they were facing each other.
"Rules?" The Junior Professor asked.
"4 vs 4. No substitutions, the first one to get 3 victories is the victor." Gary said that as he wanted to see Ray's Pokemon.
Ray for a second almost grimaced but thankfully Gary only asked for 4 vs. 4. Otherwise, he would have to reveal his Unovan and Hoenn Pokemon.
Still, though he has his four main Pokemon which he has confidence in.
Without wasting any more time he unclipped his go-to Pokemon's Pokeball.
"Very well! Then, let's go! Nidorino!" The Pallet Native threw his Pokeball and Poison Pin Pokemon manifested in front of him.
Gary slightly snorted seeing the Pokemon. Nidorino? He knew Ray would raise a Nidoking. That was the Pokemon younger Oak expected Ray to get the moment he left Pallet town!
Everyone who knows one or two bits about him knows that Ray will raise a Nidoking. And so Gary came prepared.
"Graveler! Let's do this!" Gary threw his Pokeball and Rock/Ground-type manifested in front of him.
*Snort*
"I knew you would pick one of those. Mount Moon is full of them." Ray, similarly reacted to how Gary reacted. A Graveler is something one would get if they want to go to Rock/Ground type.
"Heh? I raised this one from Geodude believe it or not." The Professor's grandson said with quite a proud tone.
And yes, it was quite hard to believe that Gary Oak raised this Graveler from Geodude.
"That's why it's one of my more powerful Pokemon! Let's start this! Graveler use Rock Throw!"
The Rock Pokemon quickly grabbed slabs of Earth which turned into stones and threw them at Nidorino.
"Use Double Kick and destroy those stones!" Ray quickly ordered his Poison-type who rushed forward. Just before the rocks arrived the Poison Pin Pokemon turned around and kicked the slabs with his hind leg.
One stone then quickly another one. with his other leg.
It was done with such precision as if this Pokemon had done this multiple times before.
"What the… Graveler quick! Use Magnitude!" Gary for a second panicked. He didn't think that Nidorino would… kick the slabs away!
"Nidorino Jump Double Kick!"
Once again The Poison-type used his hind legs to jump forward then midday turned around and used his back legs to deliver a very powerful Double Kick by this point it was much more devastating as it was done with the help of gravity.
Worse of all Gary could only look with shock and disbelief at the Poison Pin Pokemon's ability to dodge!
The Double Kick had enough force to roll Graveler back and cancel the move Magnitude.
"Damn! Graveler use that to our advantage and start Rollout!" The Grandson of Professor Oak quickly snapped out of his shock and ordered his Rock Pokemon to begin the offence.
The Rock/Ground Pokemon quickly started rolling and turning around started rushing towards Nidorino with revenge.
"You seriously using such basic tactics Gary!? Nidorino quickly jumped out of its path very last moment!" Ray quickly ordered a countermeasure against the Rollout.
*Tsk*
The younger Oak clicked his tongue seeing Nidorino once again showing its ability to jump and jump out of the path.
Seeing such miss Graveler stopped rolling and turned around to face Nidorino once more.
"Now use Toxic!" The Junior Professor quickly ordered when he saw such a great opportunity to attack!
"Damn! Graveler, Use Defensive Curl!"
Nonetheless, the Rock Pokemon is not well known for speed and Nidorino was faster than the Rock/Ground type.
Thus a blob of Toxins slammed into the Pokemon's face poisoning Graveler in the process.
Gary groaned seeing that his Pokemon was poisoned like this.
"Quick use Magnitude since he's this close! All we need is a direct hit!" The younger Oak was pulling straws here he never thought he would be pushed to the corner by a Poison-type when he is using a Rock/Ground-type!
Ray is a good example that Pokemon types are not everything but that only works when good tactics are employed!
"Double Kick! Use ground to kick off! Then use another one midair!" Ray said that with a smile he already saw through Gary, and he knew that the younger Oak would use Magnitude! It's the only known move Graveler can use at this stage apart from Rock Throw.
After all, Gary only started his journey recently. Unless of course, he has something under his sleeve but, the facial expression says otherwise.
An extremely loud sound of super-effective move landing a hit spread through the arena. Graveler was sent rolling once more, this time it was much less controlled and stopped pretty quickly after several rolls. With swirls in his eyes.
Indicating that the Rock/Ground-type was knocked out.
"What...the...hell! How versatile is that Nidorino!? Are you sure you only just started your journey!?" Gary asked with wide-opened eyes as he saw his Graveler being knocked out like that!
"We fought countless Gravelers and Geodudes on our way here," Ray said with a shrug. He pointed his Pokeball at his Poison-type.
"Nice job Nidorino now rest for a bit I will need you later." The Junior Professor recalled his Poison Pin Pokemon.
"No...way... you came from the same way as I did! Where did you fight so many of them that your Nidorino developed a fighting style to counteract against my Graveler!?" Gary recalled his Rock Pokemon still in disbelief at what he just saw.
"I hiked through Mount Moon instead of passing through dark tunnels. I had no interest in swarms of Zubats and some cowardly Sandshrews…" Ray said that with an obvious tone. As if it was the most regular thing one would do.
In truth it should be, that's the reason why people train their Pokemon. In this world, Pokemon represent one's power. If you have a powerful flyer you can cross regions easily, if you have a powerful swimmer you can dive or cross oceans on your water Pokemon.
It's natural. But, for some people, it can take years to understand that…
"I see… so you took a harsher route… Still! I won't be giving up just yet!" Gary said that seriously. The younger Oak was impressed but he won't be giving up just because Ray fought a bunch of Gravelers!
Gary recalled his knocked-out Rock Pokemon before pulling out another Pokeball.
"Let's go Raticate!"
With a burst of white light, a Brown large mouse or more like a rat appeared.
With large teeth. A pure Normal-type Pokemon.
And Ray has just a good Pokemon to counter this on.
"A Raticate huh… well, I have just a counter for this one." As Junior Professor said he threw a Pokeball.
And his Rhyhorn manifested in front of him.
The moment Gary saw his opponent he facepalmed.
His Raticate only knows Normal-type moves at the moment.
*Tsk*
"Fine! We see how much we can hurt this Rhyhorn! Raticate use Quick Attack into Hyper Fang!"
The younger Oak's Pokemon rushed forward with blinding speed.
But, all Rhyhorn did was just raise his eyebrow. Is this Mouse trying to bite him?
"Rhyhorn catch it with Take Down." Ray casually ordered this was not even a match…
"W-Wait!"
Gary already understood what was going on. He wanted to stop his Normal-type Pokemon but the Spikes Pokemon already lunged at the Mouse Pokemon.
The brown-coloured rodent could only look with quite a bit of horror at how the Plate-covered mini Rhino jumped on him.
Smashing Raticate into the ground.
"Now use Earthquake."
"Damn…" Gary could only grimace upon hearing the next command.
Moments later the Normal-type Pokemon was knocked out without even scratching Rhyhorn.
Both Ray and Gary returned their Pokemons, the Junior Professor was winning 2 to 0 and the Younger Oak started to feel the pressure.
"Let's go Nidorino!" The Grandson of Professor Oak sent out his Poison Pin Pokemon there was some sweat on Gary's forehead. He knows this might be a dumb idea to use a Pokemon which Ray knows very well. But, he was running out of options here.
"... Well, this one is quite a… weird choice," Ray said while scratching the back of his head.
"You are not the only one who wants to have a Nidoking you know," Gary said with a raised eyebrow.
"No. It's not what I meant. What I meant is I was not expecting to face a Nidorino when my own is on my roster. It feels weird." The Junior Professor just shrugged at his other neighbour and threw his Third Pokeball.
"Let's go Pidgeotto!"
With a burst of white light, Ray's flyer manifested the air.
'So, this is Ray's flyer. As expected. through it a wrong matchup for me.' Once again Gary messed up the match up… this is not how he imagined his first battle against Ray's team.
"Nidorino use Poison Sting!" Gary ordered his Poison-type to use its ranged attack.
"Agility into Double Team! Then followed by Arial Ace!"
"The what!?" Gary was slightly dumbfounded hearing an attack he never heard of!
The exchange was so fast that he could barely understand what was going on. One moment there were a bunch of copies of Pidgeotto and the next moment only one was left which turned into a streak of white light slamming into his Poison Pin Pokemon.
The attack was so powerful that his Poison-type was skidding through the ground close to several metres!
'This Pidgeotto nearly one-shot my Nidorino! What is he feeding this bird!'
'Worst of all the matchup is bad! Nidorino knows only one ranged move and it's Poison Sting!'
The younger Oak gazed at this barely standing Nidorino.
'I only have one shot at this!'
"Nidorino we have to wait for him to strike first! Once that Pidgeotto is close use Double Kick!"
Hearing Gary's command Ray could only shake his head. It would seem younger Oak knows nothing of Arial Ace…
"We will see how you going to block it! Pidgeotto Ariel Ace once more!"
Hearing his Trainer's Command the Flying/Normal-type dived in while engulfing himself in Flying-type energy before slamming into Nidorino was about to try to turn around.
This attack has sent the Poison Pin Pokemon flying several metres…
Landing on the ground and not standing up anymore.
"Well… it would seem I have won," Ray said with an obvious tone as he saw the knocked-out Nidorino.
*Sigh*
"Yeah… I guess it was a complete wipeout." Gary said with a dissapointed tone. Still, though he wasn't that sad… Ray is a beast he knew that long ago.
"Well, you did much better than Ash did," The Pallet Native said with a shrug.
"Ugh… don't compare me with Ashy-boy! Know this! I will get to you next time! Next time it will be 6 on 6!" Gary recalled his downed Nidorino before starting to walk towards the Pokemon Centre.
"Well… at least he is motivated." The Junior Professor said with a shrug to his Flyer who shrugged back at him.
