Pokemon Si c18
Added 2023-12-08 22:33:49 +0000 UTCAfter checking out the new Pokemons he captured, Ray waited for his Ground types to recover, in that time he logged in to his Global Trading Account.
He put two Magnemites for trade, hopefully he will get something nice. Last time he got an impressive set of Pokemon for a pair of wild Onixes.
Just remember those two muscle heads made the Junior Professor snort in amusement.
Remembering them he logged out from the Global Trading website and went to the General Department webpage. He went to the Evolutionary Items section to see if he could get Metal Coat.
'Hmm, it's there but the prices are absurd. I should wait for a bit before getting my hands on two of those. A Scizor is something I want as well. Keeping one spare is the way to go.
Maybe there will be some tournament which has it as a prize.'
After thinking about that he proceeded to just read up on some stuff on the internet.
Once his four Pokemon were patched up he transferred Onix and Rhyhorn to the Professor's ranch in their place he put Magneton and Electabuzz.
With all the preparation done he walked outside and released his four Pokemon.
Vibrava, Nidoking, Chansey and Charmeleon manifested around him. They all looked at their trainer.
"Guys, I am about to summon two new teammates, one of them could be problematic so be ready just in case." As Ray said that he pulled out his two new Pokeballs and was ready to throw them.
His Pokemon nodded at him, shortly after he threw two Poke balls and Magneton and Electabuzz manifested some distance away from Ray and his team.
While Magneton was floating around and looking at his new trainer, Electabuzz looked annoyed. The Electric Pokemon crossed its arms and looked quite stubborn.
"Magneton, Electabuzz I am your new trainer my name is Ray…" as the Junior Professor was introducing himself the Magnet Pokemon was already listening. This is what he liked about this specific species of Pokemon. They are like pseudo-computers. Once you capture them they will listen to you. That's why some trainers have entire hordes of these.
Like a certain villain in Sinnoh from that movie with Giratina…
While Electabuzz was quite a different tale, the Pokemon looked annoyed and looked away from his new trainer.
This is where Nidoking came to play as the Drill Pokemon walked over and looked at the Electric Pokemon from a higher point of view as if looking down on Electabuzz.
The yellow Pokemon didn't like that and released a Thunderbolt at the Poison/Ground-type.
Did it work? No, it didn't.
To answer back Nidoking used its hand and delivered a powerful Punch…
'That was Mega Punch! Did he need a little bit of extra anger to learn it? Seriously?' Ray sweatdropped when he saw how his Pokemon learned a move he has been struggling with!
The punch sent the Electric flying and knocked it out.
"It would seem Electabuzz needs some disciplining. Nice work Nidoking you just learned Mega Punch. We are going to practise that shortly."
The Drill Pokemon nodded while looking where the knocked-out Electric-type was. The large Poison/Ground type snorted before walking back next to his trainer.
"Yes, now we will start with today's training. Since Nidoking has learned Mega Punch we will continue to work on those Fighting-type moves, while you Vibrava will continue working on your Dragon-type energy." Ray instructed two of his Pokemon's before looking at his starter.
"While you Charmeleon will be focusing on advancing your control over your Fire." The Junior thought about teaching Overheat. The next powerful Fire-type move on the list.
By this point, his Starter was powerful and getting closer to that final evolution. To reach that point he needs to reach that pressure point.
And constantly practising fire help with that.
"Next move on the list is Overheat. To use it you need to concentrate fire in your mouth. And make it as hot as possible before releasing in as straight a line as possible." Ray gave basic information first. He knows this is not all there is to that move. But, the basics need to be achieved first.
Seeing his Starter nod at him, the Junior Professor looked at the Magnet Pokemon who was floating there and waiting for its turn.
"We will start with testing how good you are Magneton, as Evolved Pokemon with experience you already have a good foundation. We just need to test them out and adjust."
Ray's gaze went to Vibrava who was waiting for the time when training could start.
"Before you begin with your training Vibrava you will fight Magneton."
The Vibrations Pokemon happily nodded as he buzzed around with excitement.
"Good, then the rest of you can begin with our training. Nidoking you keep your eye on Electabuzz, Chansey you as well. We will beat that stubbornness out of him."
The pair nodded at him before proceeding to do their thing. Chansey was on standby just in case someone knocks itself out and needs that medical support.
"Good, let's begin! Magneton use Lock On then use Flash Cannon!"
"And you Vibrava try to intercept that Flash Cannon!"
The Magnet Pokemon three eyes flashed red as it locked on, and then it started gathering Steel-type energy into a ball, once the critical level was reached it was released at Vibrava.
"Use Dragonbreath to intercept!"
The Ground/Dragon type opened its mouth and released a stream of greenish-blue flames. It took some effort but Vibrava was able to make it explode.
Ray was slightly impressed by the power of Magneton.
This Pokemon is powerful, he wasn't able to see its power because of the way he defeated it. But against a Pokemon which can deal proper damage, it's very powerful.
"Now let's see your speed! Get in close and use Supersonic! While you Vibrava try to dodge it and use Dragonbreath!"
Once the instructions were given the pair started an aerial battle. The Electric/Steel type tried to hit the Vibrations Pokemon with the confusion move while the Ground/Dragon type tried to hit with its Dragon-type move.
In the end, the Magneton landed its Supersonic attack and made Vibrava confused.
"Now use Tri-Attack."
The Magnet Pokemon created fire, ice and lightning balls with its three segments and released at the Dragonfly Pokemon which was slightly confused from the previous attack.
"Vibrava try to dodge."
The Pokemon tried to dodge but it ended up slamming its head into the ground.
This made the attack hit successfully which has ruffled the Vibrations Pokemon quite a bit.
"Vibrava answer back with Dragonbreath."
Once again the Pokemon tried to do just that but it was looking away in the wrong direction.
"Try using your other senses instead of relying on just your eyes," Ray instructed his Ground/Dragon-type while looking at Magneton.
"Use Flash Canon."
The Magnet Pokemon created another ball of Steel-type energy before releasing it at Vibrava who was still struggling with the confusion.
This was something he will need to address with his Pokemon. Confusion can be a pain in the butt. Especially for Pokemon who don't have that much experience yet.
The Steel-type move landed a direct hit which sent the Vibrations Pokemon skidding through the ground. Then it finally snapped out and released an intense stream of Draconic flames.
It was a direct hit but the move is not that effective against Electric/Steel-type Pokemon.
"Alright, it's enough. I have seen what I wanted to see." Ray's words have stopped the fight. He already knows where to put the bar for his Magneton.
It was not far from where a trainer's evolved Magneton should be. But since it's a wild one it's slightly weaker. Wild Pokemon tend to evolve because they have to, not because they have reached the critical point needed for natural evolution.
This is with most Pokemon like this, it's a gamble when you capture an evolved Pokemon. Because that Pokemon could need more work than a pre-evolved would.
Sounds strange but it's the truth. The older the Pokemon the more habits they would have. Some Pokemon have ways to fight already, it could clash with the new trainer's fighting style.
Ray has a solution for this, his fighting style adjusts to the Pokemon and its characteristics. For example his Rhyhorn… this Spikes Pokemon fighting style is all about charging in and headbutts, while Charmeleon is all about fiery fighting style to deliver the payload with as much heat as possible.
The Junior Professor is trying to grow his Pokemon as naturally as possible without imposing too much of his will. Though tactics are important for that he is trying to make them as well-rounded as possible.
Thankfully, Magneton evolved with a fighting style that fits. He doesn't want to have something like Physical Fighter develop into a ranged fighter route. That would just make him spend extra time re-training how it is supposed to be.
~~~~~~Unova~~~~~~
"Here is the plan. We will go around and look for Roggenrola, or Joltik! if lucky enough we might find a Solosis!" Elesa said as she had a notebook in her hands. There was a small plan drawn there. She was using the same book where she thought about designing clothes but now she is using it to plan a scheme to get a Pokemon for Ray.
"...Umm…Elesa, you and I are using Flying and Electric types… it doesn't match well with Roggenrola… besides aren't those found in caves?"
"They are! Besides, Joltik are cute! I might catch one for myself!" The girl easily agreed, without skipping a beat.
"...You do know that my Pokemon are practically useless there," Skyla said with a tired sigh.
"Yes…BUT your Swanna can use Water-type moves! Against Rock-types it is perfect!"
"...Against Joltik it's practically a guaranteed knockout. It's four times the damage." The Flying Pokemon trainer pointed that out.
"Do you want to impress Ray or not? You want that Pidgey no!?" The black-haired girl snapped at her friend with that pessimistic look at their future adventure!
"...You are right… but caves give me those claustrophobic vibes… I don't like them that much…" the red-haired girl said while hugging herself for a bit while shaking from old memories.
"Yeah, I know! But Ray casually faced Zapdos, and even took pictures! This is nothing!"
"Fine… let's do this."
~~~
Truthfully, Elesa's plan wasn't perfect, far from it… for one there were not that many caves in the area they were. Secondly, Joltik are not common Pokemon. They live in quite specific areas.
Like Chargestone Cave on Route 6, not in some random place they were at this moment. Regardless, they could still find Roggenrola.
So by the time they found a cave, more than several hours had passed and they were in the middle of nowhere.
The cave they found had a water stream. The water stream is coming out from the cave. Elesa followed one of Ray's tips which was to find a stream and walk up to the source. They would find either a swap or a cave system of some sort.
Turns out they did find a cave.
"...Are you sure… we haven't found any Pokemon for some time now. This area could be home to some seriously dangerous Pokemon." Skyla said with a nervous tone.
"Don't worry my Emolga can use Flash just in case we find a nest of some dangerous Pokemon," Elesa said with a confident voice.
"...You seriously want that Magnemite."
"And you don't want that Pidgey? you've been sleep talking about it." Elesa's teasing tone made the red-haired girl blush from embarrassment.
"Fine… I just think we are seriously in a bad place." The Flying-type Pokemon trainer admitted but there was some unease in her eyes as she looked at the cave.
"I see your point but we still have our Pokemon." The black-haired girl said that as she pulled out her two Pokeballs.
*Sigh*
"Let's just get this over with." The red-haired girl pulled out her Pokeball.
Moments later the pair summoned their Pokemons.
Elesa had an Emolga, the Sky Squirrel Pokemon, which is a small Pokemon which can fly. It's quite cute and girls like them.
Her other Pokemon was her starter which is Zebstrika, the Thunderbolt Pokemon. It's the evolved form of Blitzle. This Pokemon is known for its Wild Charge move which delivers devastating Electrical attacks.
Where Skyla summoned her Swanna, the White Bird Pokemon. It's dual type, Water/Flying-type. With this Pokemon size, it won't be able to fly in the cave however it's not the Pokemon purpose. Elesa wants Swanna for its Water-type attacks.
After the Pokemons were summoned the pair slowly started to walk into the cave. Elesa ordered her Emolga to use Flash so that they could see in the cave.
The moment they entered the pair started to look around.
Skyla's eyes ended up on the walls where she noticed something.
"...Um…I think those are territorial markings…"
"Yes… it appears so… "
"Don't you think it's dangerous?" Skyla said with an even more nervous tone.
As they continued to walk they noticed that there were no Pokemon to speak of… this pointed towards the direction that this cave was taken over by a single Pokemon of some sort.
*SHAKE*
"!?"
"!!!"
"There was a shake."
"Yes! Let's go and see!" The Black haired girl rushed forward, and her Pokemon followed her.
"Damn that girl!" Skyla followed right after, the moment her best friend puts something in her mind she will have a single-tracked mind! She knew this place is freaking dangerous but she came here anyway!
'You silly girl Ray at least is prepared for his encounters! We are not!' The red-haired girl thought to herself, she remembered how Elesa said that Ray had four Pokemons of one type just to face all those Electric ones! And they don't have proper Water-type in this situation! Her Swanna is not fit for caves!
Regardless, the pair of Trainer and Pokemon followed deeper in the cave.
The deeper they walked the more they noticed that those were not territorial markings… no they were just… attacks on the walls? Like someone is just hitting the cave walls repeatedly.
"Oh my gosh!"
"Elesa what did you find!?" The red-haired girl asked with a fearful and at the same time curious tone.
'Please no Legendary, please no Legendary, please no Legendary, please no Legendary, please no Legendary.' Skyla chanted to herself, they are not prepared for those beasts!
Eventually, after a single corner, they saw a bluish-black Pokemon…
"...Sweat Arceus… it's a Deino…" The Flying-type Pokemon trainer said with wide eyes. They just found the first form of the Pseudo Legendary of Unova!
'No wonder there were no Pokemon around… this Pokemon most likely ate all of them!'
"...Elesa we should leave… Deino is way…WAY too dangerous!"
"No, we're going to capture it!"
"...You Serious?" Skyla gulped down. Sure she might fight it if they were outside where she could use her Pokemon's Aerial advantage but not in a cave!
"Yes. It's just Deino, not Hydreigon, we can do it!" As Elesa said she got serious and looked at the Irate Pokemon. The Dark/Dragon-type already notice the intruders.
Moments later it released a stream of Greenish blue flames at the group. The girls and their Pokemon quickly got out of the way.
"It appears he found us!"
"It doesn't have eyes but it has great hearing!" Skyla quickly told with a nervous look.
"You know quite a bit about a Pokemon which is not a Flying type!"
"Hydreigon can fly! So I was interested…" The red-haired girl said with a nervous and embarrassed tone.
"I see! Anyway, it's preparing to attack again! We need to answer back! Zebstrika use Wild Charge and Emolga uses Slark!"
Elesa's Pokemon quickly moved into action sparks of Electricity started to be released as the pair of Electric Pokemon used their moves.
The Thunderbolt Pokemon was the first one to slam into the Dark/Dragon-type.
The damage was significant but the Irate Pokemon didn't mind it much, it was about to smack back with a Headbutt but then Emolga slammed into Deino with Spark.
This made the counter-attack from Dark/Dragon-type to be cancelled as it was pushed back.
"Quick Skyla, drench it with a water attack!"
"...Fine! Swanna use Water Pulse! Support Elesa's Pokemon!"
The White Bird Pokemon listened to her trainer and opened her beak. Creating a sphere of water and then launching at the Deino.
Once again, the attack was a direct hit.
This makes three direct attacks and the Pokemon doesn't even look winded!
"In this case! Zebstrika use Thunder Wave!" Elesa ordered her starter to inflict status ailments. While Skyla waited for her moment to attack.
The Thunderbolt Pokemon delivered the Electric attack which made the Dark/Dragon Pokemon twitch from paralysis.
Then, all three were all about to attack the Irate Pokemon, Zebstrika with Wild Charge, forcing Deino to skid back several metres, furiously the Dark/Dragon Pokemon released a powerful Dragonbreath at approaching Emolga, delivering a powerful blow which send the Electric/Flying Pokemon flying back.
Elesa quickly recalled her Sky Squirrel Pokemon and ordered Zebstrika to attack once again this time with Thunderbolt.
While Skyla once ordered Swanna to use Water Pulse.
This time Deino collapsed on the ground and Paralysis returned with force.
Seeing that this was a good moment the black-haired girl threw an empty Pokeball.
Seconds later the Dark/Dragon-type Pokemon was sucked in and the ball started to shake.
Both Elesa and Skyla looked with bated breath to see if they were successful with this.
Then… the Pokeball calmed down and there was a loud click sound signifying a capture.
"...no way… you did it!"
The first one to react was the red-haired girl who exclaimed with wide eyes. For a moment she thought they were going to be toasted as she saw Emolga getting pretty much one-shooted by that Irate Pokemon.
While Elesa was still spacing out for a bit before snapping out.
"We did it, Zeb!" The girl rushed forward and hugged her Thunderbolt Pokemon.
The pure Electric-type could only sigh and accept the affection of her trainer.
After some time the girl walked over and picked up the Pokeball. She inspected it before pocketing it.
"With this, I am sure, I will impress Ray."
"... I wasn't expecting Deino or all things but yeah. I am sure this will blow his mind away." Skyla said with a smirk.
"And you said 'dangerous', to 'scary'." Elesa started to tease her best friend once again.
"...we are in a cave and my Pokemon here are useless… plus it's very dark here." The red-haired girl said with a shiver as she looked around.
"Riiiight… anyway, let's get back. It should be getting dark outside."
Her friend didn't argue with her, she wants to leave this claustrophobic cave as soon as possible.
"...um… now what should I get for Ray?"
"...Roggenrola?"
"...Ehh? I am not going into another cave!"
~~~
As the pair returned to the Pokemon Centre, Elesa quickly walked to the Nurse Joy who was at the counter.
"Nurse Joy, can you check my Pokemon, please? I have captured a Deino, just be careful with it." She said while handing over her three Pokeballs.
"Oh? The one not far from here? I was thinking of asking Pokemon Rangers to capture it and release it further away from the centre." The pink-haired nurse explained as she was pleased that someone captured that dangerous Pokemon.
"...You knew that there was a Deino so close?" The Electric-type Pokemon trainer asked with wide eyes.
"Why yes, several trainers told me before, but none of them wanted to capture it. It's very difficult to train one of those."
"...I see…" the girl groaned while facepalm, she should just ask Nurse Joy about Pokemon in the area instead of just guessing what lives here!
While Elesa was facepalming Skyla was laughing in the background.
"Anyway, how is the egg? Is it going to hatch soon?"
"Why yes! It is so rare to have an egg of a Pikachu evolutionary line so far away from its natural habitat!"
Seeing how the nurse was reacting with excitement, Elesa could not help but smile.
Soon her Emolga will have a competition for the cutest Pokemon in the world title.
~~~~~~Back in Kanto~~~~~~
"You know if you would listen to me you would learn moves which could damage my Nidoking," Ray said with a tired sigh as he looked at the stubborn Electabuzz.
His new addition to the team is a salty and petty Electric Pokemon who doesn't like losing in extension and doesn't like being captured as well.
"Buzz!" The Pokemon huffed with crossed arms as he looked away.
"Well, you can continue being like this, you won't be getting good food and new moves, evolution and you won't be able to participate in big battles, praised by thousands and get remembered by the whole wide world.
It's up to you Electabuzz. You can just… continue sleeping."
The more Ray 'Stabbed' the less the Electric-type Pokemon looked certain that he should be stubborn like this.
"Besides, I am a Professor, I know how to raise Pokemon, you saw yourself, I defeated pretty much everyone in the Power Plant."
Yes… pretty much was the words, since he didn't beat one certain Pokemon there.
Eventually, Electabuzz sighed and stopped being stubborn and nodded at Ray.
"Good. Let's get some training done."
The Junior Professor smiled seeing he was able to get to his Pokemon.
The first training session was against Charmeleon. There was a reason for this, Ray wanted his Starter to experience more battles as it was getting close to his evolution to Charizard.
"Electabuzz use Thunderbolt!"
The Electric Pokemon started to spin his arms and released a burst of electricity at Charmeleon.
"Intercept with your Flamethrower."
The Flame Pokemon released a stream of flames at the incoming Thunderbolt.
The stream of flames consumed the electricity and continued to rush towards Electabuzz.
"Dodge Electabuzz and then get close to Charmeleon and attack with Thunder Punch."
The pure Electric-type barely was able to dodge the attack, before rushing forward towards the pure Fire-type.
"Charmeleon back-to-back Fire Punch to intercept."
The Flame Pokemon roared and fire and electric punches collided.
It was quite close to a stalemate, but Charmeleon roared once more and used his other hand to deliver a punch to the gut of Electabuzz.
"And Stop!"
The pair stopped and looked at their trainer.
"As you can see Electabuzz the punch attacks like Thunder Punch or Fire Punch can be used with both hands," Ray said while showing both of hands.
"You have two hands so do try using it when I say 'back to back', this kind of move would catch someone off guard to deliver that extra damage." The Junior Professor instructed his Pokemon.
The Electric Pokemon nodded while having an understanding look. He looked at both of his hands.
"Yes, we will practise your Thunder Punch before spreading out to Fighting-type moves. This way you will have an edge against Rock-type Pokemon."
Hearing about having ways to fight Rock-types made Electabuzz nod happily.
"Good. Now let's return to practising."
After saying his part, Ray went back and the practice match between Charmeleon and Electabuzz resumed.
Charmeleon won it hands down but it was good practice for the newly captured Electabuzz.
~~~
After practice and training sessions were done, Ray returned to the road.
His journey destination didn't change, he still needs his Ghost-type Pokemon.
Gengar was always something he wanted his hands on. There aren't many Ghost-types that he wants to add to his roster. But, Gengar was always something he wanted to have.
And the Kanto Pokemon list only has one type of Ghost and that is the Gengar evolutionary line.
Now Ghost-types are tricky Pokemon to deal with, thankfully he has his Pawniard which is Dark/Steel-type Pokemon.
Both Psychic-types and Ghost-types are weak against Dark-types. This is another reason why Ray got a Pawniard through trade. The main one was that Kanto doesn't have native Dark-type Pokemon.
Several days later the Junior Professor was in another Pokemon Centre quite close to Lavender town.
Like always he followed his schedule and got his Pokemon checked while getting some snacks and checking his emails.
'Hmm… what this…'
Ray checked the email from Elesa, and the girl got a Pokemon for him.
'Damn she was serious about the Magnemite. It's not that big of a deal, seriously…' The Pallet Native sweatshop thinking how she caught something serious from the looks of it… there were far too many exclamation marks.
Eventually, he read the email and he got blown away! She got a freaking Deino!
Unova Pseudo-Legendary!
While Deino isn't as rare as Beldum or Dratini, raising Deino into Hydreigon on its own is a journey. The Pokemon evolves into Zweilous at level 50 and Hydreigon at level 64 that's the highest level required for any other Pokemon to date!
That's why mixed with incredibly taxing training since the Pokemon is brutal, after all, it's part Dark part Dragon, two most difficult types of Pokemon mixed into one, makes this Pokemon not as lucrative to raise.
That's why it's not as rare as other Pseudo-Legendary…
Well, it's still rare but not as one would expect.
'Honestly… I expected her to get me Joltik or Tynamo… you know… Electric-types… from electric girl…' Ray sighed but it was a happy and excited sigh. It's a freaking Deino!
So, without wasting time he quickly wrote it back to her, that hell yeah! He accepts the trade!
Once he wrote the email down, he quickly went to check what everyone is offering for him for those two Magnemites that he wants to trade.
'Well, well… there are some good choices… I could get a Scyther from some dude from Orange Islands, or…
Holy shit… someone wants to trade Skorupi for Magnemite!?
Hell yeah!' Ray quickly accepted that! If he could raise Skorupi into Drapion it would be a beast if it's raised properly! That thing could shred through a team alone!
Though selecting a second Pokemon for his other Magnemite was a challenge. There wasn't much of a choice. He didn't want another Rock or Ground-type or a Water-type not to mention any of the Ghost-types they offered wasn't something Ray wanted. He wants a Gastly evolutionary line.
In the end, he realised that he only has one Fire type, his Starter… yet he already has two Dragon types… shortly he will have three once Elesa sends over Deino…
So he had a hard time choosing between Houndour or Vulpix…
In the end, he went with Vulpix, the reason for this is that when he will be in Johto there aren't that many interesting Pokemon he can capture there. He is not that big of a fan of Pokemon who inhabit Johto, unlike Hoenn or Sinnoh…
This is why he will capture a wild Houndour in Johto himself instead of getting via trade.
'Though for someone to offer Vulpix… they are quite foxy and…' though Ray quickly checked who offered that Pokemon he found out that it was one of his fans…
He sweatdropped yeah… he figured out that the girl wants one of his Pokemon…
Well, Vulpix is cute and Ray always wanted one alongside Growlithe, Growlithe is a must, though people don't trade those, as the Pokemon is like a dog who attaches himself to the trainer.
This is why he needs to find one himself. Once he has one he raises it to become like a mount once it evolves into Arcanine that is…
And so after accepting the trade options he waited.
~~~~~~Pallet Town~~~~~~
*Ding*
"Oh, he traded those Magnemites, let's see what Ray got for those."
Professor quite giddily checked out. He was acting like a small boy who finds something new to discover!
First, he saw Magnemite for a Vulpix which he could only smile at, this is one high-maintenance Pokemon which many ladies love.
Next was a Sinnoh Pokemon which he doesn't know much about. He will need to do his study on this Poison/Bug-type… Ray doesn't have a Bug-type so this was expected to some degree…
Then… the last one which made him cough when he saw a picture of this Pokemon!
"By Arceus… another Pseudo-Legendary! This time Unovan one!" Professor Oak sweatdropped when he realised what this means.
Deino is something he read about. When Pokemon is named Irate Pokemon one could know what this means! Such brutal and hard-to-raise Pokemon… the aged Professor could see why Ray has chosen this one.
He wants a challenge and raising Deino into Hydreigon is a challenge on its own.
'Though who trades one of these to him? For a Magnemite no less!'
Sure enough, Professor Oak's curiosity went to the girl who traded a Pseudo-Legendary for quite common Magnemite!
'What's this… it appears Ray has been keeping in touch with this trainer over the forums…' For a second the Professor smirked with a knowing look.
