Professor Oak was confused by the data he was getting from Ray.
Since his ‘Apprentice’ was a Junior Professor, the old man was getting all the notifications from any sort of changes to the boy’s Pokemon.
That means each day in the evening, he would get a bunch of pings.
It was at this point that Ray would recall his Pokemon. The old man quickly realised that the boy was doing some serious training.
Each day, his Pokemon would get bigger and heavier.
The thing he was intrigued by was the insane progress of the Dratini the boy was training!
‘If he continues with this mindboggling speed, his Dratini will evolve in a matter of days, not weeks or months.’ The Professor took a sip of his coffee and then opened the emails and begun to write one to Ray.
The old man had no idea when the boy would call him, but he needed to remind him to note down the progress of raising his Dratini.
Not every day one of his sponsored trainers raises such a rare Pokemon… AND is a Junior Professor.
‘It's much faster than it was with my Dragonite.’ The Professor can see months, if not years, of progress stuffed in days.
‘Honestly, what IS he doing?’
He checked the boys line up he has…
‘He has Chansey…
…
…
Oh…’
The old man’s eyes widened.
The boy has Gyarados, Milotic and Charizard… is he making them constantly fight each other!?
‘...with Chansey around, he can have tens of battles daily!’
The Professor massaged his forehead. How he never thought of such a crafty method before?
‘To think he would… ‘cheat’ this way… no… it’s not cheating; this is smart.’
Truth be told, the old man had no idea how to categorise such a method.
Of course, he won’t tell anyone. Ray’s methods are his alone. If he is willing to share, then that's fine, but he won’t do that.
‘On the other hand, Ash still has not acquired his third badge.’
Professor Oak could see that his other trainer had been in the city for several days.
While his Grandson was in a completely different location, he would seem to visit major cities first and buy items in bulk for training.
From the looks of it, only Ash is behind…by miles.
“Professor.”
The voice of his assistant got him back from his work.
“Oh, right! Is the final trainer here?” The old man looked at the younger assistant.
“Yes, Miss Green just arrived.”
“Finally, she is late.” The Professor smiled as he stood up and walked over, collecting the last Pokeball he got for this year of trainers.
The old man had to lie about the number of Pokemon he had. After all, Ash and Pikachu are destined for each other. The old man still remembers that faithful day many years ago in Johto.
It took him a while to understand; after all, time travel is a bit tricky, but he eventually understood and made sure everything was ready for Ash.
But that leaves Bulbasaur, the Grass Starter. Thankfully, he got a late application from a girl who wanted it.
So here he was, waiting with the last Pokeball.
‘She is way behind, but I doubt she is interested in the League.’
The girl will stand out quite a bit from the rest of his sponsored trainers.
‘Or not. After all, I witnessed how quickly Pokemon can evolve, even if one is late, but then again, she might not wish to fight.’
“Professor, you can return to your thoughts after we let the trainer go.” The assistant complained to the Professor, who was deeply in his thoughts…
“Right, my bad.”
The pair walked to the room where a girl dressed in a black sleeveless shirt and blue jean shorts was waiting. She had long brown hair and looked quite serious.
“Professor Oak, my apologies for arriving so late.” The girl bowed to him the moment she saw him.
“It’s fine. Thankfully, you pre-booked beforehand, so I was able to keep your Pokemon for you.” The old man pulled out a Pokeball with a leaf on it.
The girl’s eyes sparkled as she saw she got the Pokemon she wanted.
“Thank you very much!” She clapped her hands, making the old man chuckle a bit.
“As you know, this is Balbasaur, the grass-type starter.” He explained to her before pulling out a red pokedex and five empty pokeballs.
“Apart from your starter Pokemon, you get the Pokedex and five empty pokeballs.
For extras, you need to buy them yourself, and if you catch beyond six, the new catch will be sealed, and you will need to send the extras to my ranch. This is to help you manage your Pokemon, as taking care of six Pokemon can be a challenge as it is.”
“No worries, Professor, I am not planning to catch that many.” The girl reassured him, making the Professor smile. He then handed the starter Pokemon and the empty pokeballs to the girl.
“The Pokedex works like an ID for you as well. Just in case you need it.”
He handed the red book-like device to the girl.
“My thanks.” The brown haired girl pocketed the device before looking at him for any other information.
“Alright, you are good to go.”
She nodded, but before she left, the girl decided to ask.
“Ummm, do you know Ray’s possible travelling route?” She asked him all of a sudden.
“...Ray’s?” The old man blinked for a second. He didn’t expect that!
“Yes! I am a big fan of his! I wish to travel with him!” The girl gushed at such a prospect.
“...That would be difficult.” The old man scratched the back of his head.
“He is somewhere around Vermillion City, training his Pokemon alone. Apart from that, he calls me from time to time.”
“Vermillion City… that is a bit of distance.” The girl mumbled to herself before excusing herself and leaving the lab.
The Assistant looked at leaving girl before gazing at the professor.
“That boy sure is a magnet for people.” The man can’t believe he is that famous at such an age.
“...And it’s only the beginning.” Professor Oak showed a strained smile as he realised that once Ray start showing Pseudo Legendaries in battles, it would skyrocket his fame further.
~~~~~~With Ray~~~~~~
It was the fourth day of training on the beach of Vermillion City. Ray’s Pokemon were in the sea, causing a huge whirlpool, while Dratini was battling Charizard on the shore.
‘Hmm, that old man just can’t stop spying on me.’ Ray frowned as he recalled the email.
That Professor forgot that the Junior Professor was typing down his journey and training anyway.
‘Still…’
The Pallet Native’s eyes went to the blue serpentine dragon. His Pokemon's growth spurt was ridiculous. It had been four days, and the Pokemon’s length had increased four times!
Before, it could barely coil up around his leg; now, it can wrap him up effortlessly! Its sheer length was almost as long as Dragonair!
“Dra!!!”
The Dragon Pokemon was surrounded by green and blue flames and rushed into shocked Charizard. The Flame Pokemon crossed his arms and tanked the hit.
‘That was Dragon Rush.’
Ray looked surprised for a second. But then his eyes sparkled as white light consumed the dragon-type Pokemon!
It grew in size, a small horn appeared on its head, an orb manifested under his mouth, and the pair of head wings became bigger.
‘The amount of dragon type of energy he had became critical. It caused an evolution!’
“DRAGONAIR!!!”
The newly evolved Dragonair roared, declaring its appearance to the world.
The long serpentine Pokemon instinctually began to float and look at Charizard challengely.
“Let’s see!” Ray pulled out his Pokedex and checked his latest Pokemon with a huge grin! He finally did it!
[Dragonair]
[Dragon Pokemon]
[Type: Dragon]
[Ability: Shed Skin]
[Gender: Male]
[Moves: Wrap, Leer, Thunder Wave, Hydro Pump Surf, Rain Dance, Dragon Rage, Dragonbreath, Dragon Rush, Dragon Dance]
‘Ohhh, Dragon Dance! We can work with that!’ Ray’s eyes gleamed at the sight of one of his favourite moves
“Let’s start, guys! Dragonair, use Dragon Dance!”
The Blue Serpentine Pokemon began to move in a hypnotic manner as flaming clouds of blue and green surrounded him.
“Now use Dragonbreath!”
Compressed flames of green and blue rushed at Charizard.
“Answer with Flamethrower, Charizard!”
The Flame Pokemon countered with his impressive Flamethrower, causing a considerable explosion.
Ray needed to take a step back even when he was a distance away.
‘Damn, these guy are beginning to cause quite the explosions!’
“Now Dragonair, use your Dragon Rush!”
The Serpentine Pokemon surrounded itself in draconic flames and rushed towards Charizard with absurd speed.
“Use Protect, Charizard!”
However, the dragon type was quicker, and the attack connected, sending the Flame Pokemon flying away.
‘That’s a lot of power.’
Ray had a sweaty forehead when he saw that; this was an impressive show of Dragon’s power.
It would seem that Charizard needed to catch its breath after that attack to his gut.
“Let’s continue. Dragonair use Hydro Pump, and Charizard use your Flamethrower!”
The pair exchanged their attacks, and it seemed that Charizard was winning. His flamethrower was pushing Dragonair’s Hydro Pump.
It would seem that in special attack rating, Ray’s starter was stronger.
But then the attacks exploded, and the Junior Professor needed to cover his eyes, as the force was considerable, and dust and sand were everywhere.
“Not bad, for now. Take a short break; it's time for dinner.”
The pair stopped in their tracks as the word ‘dinner’ was like magic to them.
Not long after Ray called back his water types, the trio looked surprised to see Dragonair in place of Dratini. It was quite the shocker, as the Dragon Pokemon was quite young compared to them.
After dinner and a short break, everyone returned to their training. Ray wondered if Dragonair’s growth speed would slow down even a little, and it did, but this was when Ray decided to add him to the whirlpool training…
It was where it began to accelerate again.
Honestly, he was both surprised and stupefied by how quickly the Pokemon could adapt, improve, and then accelerate at such training.
Some of them are slower, while others can be faster.
Ray considered the speed of growth to be attributed to their draconic nature. Dragons are competitive and easily form rivalries.
‘Oh… of course… Charizard is my starter, and I am Dragonair’s ‘parent’ It makes sense that he tries to compete and try getting as strong as quickly as possible.’
The Junior Professor quickly noted this down as he continued to watch the whirlpool training.
An issue with this training is that his Pokemon end up knocking each other out and sometimes almost getting washed away by the ocean currents. Thankfully, he has more than one Pokemon that can swim. Most of the time, Gyarados is the one that saves the knocked-out Poliwrath, with the second being a recently evolved Dragonair that gets knocked out.
But then, when his Pokemon rest and sparing begins, the first one to get knocked out is Charizard; his starter gets taken out in just a few moves.
However, he quickly improves and gets stronger rapidly.
‘That reminds me.’
“Charizard, it's time for you to learn Hyper Beam and your signature move, Blast Burn.”
His Starter perked up when he heard that.
“Both moves require you to gather energy in one spot. Hyper Beam is the first step for Blast Burn.”
Ray began to explain as he motioned for his Pokemon to get away from the beach and towards a quieter forest clearing, where the Junior Professor’s super-strong medic Chansey brought over a couple of boulders.
“You need to gather energy in your mouth and compress it, mould it into a ball.” He began to explain in a serious tone.
“I already taught you Fire Blast, which requires you to gather energy. But this is a step further, as you need to compress it.”
Ray knows that Blast Burn, Frenzy Plant and Hydro Cannon are moves only taught by Pokemon Move Experts. Still, the Pallet Native studied these moves extensively, as they are signature moves of Starter Pokemons regardless of Region.
But quickly enough, he noticed that his Starter was struggling with the concept of compress…
To fix that, Ray went to the beach and grabbed some sand.
“Look, this how you ‘compress’.”
The Junior Professor used some water to wet the sand and began to form it into a ball.
The Pokemon looked curiously for a second, then pondered for a bit. The Flame Pokemon stroked his chin with a claw before returning to testing.
Meanwhile, Ray went to the beach to watch his Pokemon train in Whirlpool.
It was the fifth day, and the Whirlpool training was becoming easy for them.
Dragonair quickly caught up to Gyarados and Milotic. But his Poliwrath is a bit behind, as the Water/Fighting type is more of a land fighter. So, while this training while in water is good, he needs to fight to improve to get that edge that his two serpentine water types have.
Seeing that they reached a power plateau, it was time to return to move practising.
Ray began instructing Dragonair, Gyarados, and Milotic on the must-have move Aqua Tail, while Poliwrath was learning fighting moves.
All the punches, as well as some signature moves that Ray loves, like Brick Break.
And so, for the remaining days, the group trained their moves and consolidated their new powers.
~~~~~~The Day of Setting Sail~~~~~~
“Ray, my boy! What in Arceus' name have you been feeding your Pokemon!?” The professor’s face was extremely close to the camera. Ray needed to pull back from the monitor as it was far too close.
“In a mere week, you evolved Dratini! Do you know how absurd that is!?” The Kanto Professor began to tell him about the absurdity of Ray’s pseudo-legendary training speed.
“I simply used his Dragon nature to boost his training.” Ray began to explain to his ‘Boss’.
“Dragons are competitive by nature, so I used the way he feels to maximise his growth speed.”
Professor Oak continuously nodded a bunch of times while he listened.
“Instead of making them go easy and try babysitting, I made him go wild.”
The Junior Professor had a flashback how many times he knocked out his Dratini and then Dragonair… one could say that it was brutal, it maybe is but the power his Pokemon wields is considerable.
Hell, his Dragon type is already showing signs of the next evolution. That means that this method is working.
“Genius! As expected! You already wrote an essay about Pokemon Natures, but this is a step further!” The old man praised the boy briefly before asking a serious question.
“I hope you recorded your Dratini training? Did you?” He asked in a hopeful voice.
“Of course, professor.” Ray sighed before expanding on it.
“I will be on a Cruise for a couple of days. I can email the data.”
“Cruise, you say?”
“Yes, it’s a trip around the world, but I will get out in the Sevii Islands,” he explained to the old man about his plans.
“I see, I see, that place is intriguing. Some rare Pokemon live there. Have fun there, Ray, my boy.”
“I will. For now, I want my Hunter. He can help with capturing, and in turn, I will send my Poliwrath.” Ray pulled out a Pokeball and showed it to the Professor.
“Fine plan. Let me fetch your Haunter.”
A couple of minutes later, Ray had his Ghost/Poison type. The Junior Professor left the Pokemon Centre and walked to the back, where the battling arenas were.
He threw his Haunter’s Pokeball, and the Gas Pokemon appeared before him.
“Haunter, I need your help.” Ray began the conversation with his only Ghost type.
“Hau?” The Pokemon looked curious and intrigued.
“I will be travelling on a cruise ship, but there are some criminals who want to get aboard this ship and steal Pokemons aboard it.
What I need you for is your Hypnosis. I want you to put these criminals to sleep when the time is right.”
Haunter nodded a couple of times before showing a thumbs-up.
“Great, then enter my shadow.” Ray motioned his shadow, and the Ghost type swirtly entered it.
Now he will have a secret weapon when the time is right. No one would expect a Ghost type in a person’s shadow. This would help the Junior Professor if something happens.
With everything set, Ray went to collect all of his things in the Pokemon Centre and then booked out. It was time to set sail!
~~~
“Ray!?”
‘Of course, in all that training, I forgot they are travelling too.’
The Pallet Native turned around and faced the trio. Ash was the one who had called him.
“You guys are finally travelling?” Ray asked them.
“Yep! I got my badge!” Ash puffed his chest, proud of his achievement.
“Good for you.” Junior Professor rolled his eyes before looking at the other two. “I can assume you guys are coming on this trip?”
“Yep! We got free tickets! Can you believe that!?” Misty exclaimed in a gushing tone. The girl was a huge cruise liner fan.
So she couldn’t believe someone had given her a free ticket like this.
“Lucky you. I got mine for beating Surge in a six vs six fight.”
“I see. That is a great reward!” Misty nodded as to her, thinking it was a great reward.
“I only got a badge,” Ash complained for a second, making Brock and Misty roll their eyes at his complaints.
“Well, you only had a regular gym fight.” Ray reminds him.
“...Yeah…” For a second, Ash had dark clouds above his head.
Regardless, the four of them talked for a bit before they got in the ship and split up.
It turns out that Ray has a VIP cabin with a considerable amount of space.
Once he placed his backpack on the bed, he called his Gas Pokemon.
“Haunter.”
At that moment, his Shadow moved, and the Ghost/Poison Pokemon came out.
“I want you to find a woman with long red hair and a man with blue hair. They have a talking Meowth.” Ray showed the Pokedex entry for Meowth.
“Haunt!”
The Ghost Pokemon nodded at the assigment.
“If you can find them, return to me and tell me.”
With another nod, the Pokemon disappeared, leaving Ray alone. The Junior Professor decided to explore the cabin and then the ship. He won’t be long on it, so he needs to make the most of it.
…
…
…
With map in hand, the Pallet Native started on the floors dedicated to Pokemon Trainers. He ignored all of the regular shops because his clothes were not regular; they were for heavy-duty usage.
So, regular clothing stores are useless for him. However, the same can’t be said about clothing for trainers.
“Ugh…” Ray groaned, seeing how cheap it was! He didn’t come here to buy clothes!
The Junior Professor pulled back and bit his lower lip before passing the clothes stores.
Eventually, he stopped at an item store.
‘Oh! Metal Coat!’
His eyes ended up on posters with Steelix and Scizor! With big letters, it says items that evolve Onix and Scyther.
It was a big ad campaign to sell the items for these evolutions.
He took two before walking deeper into the store. He quickly noticed sets of evolution stones, which he took as well.
After that, he checked out collections of Pokeballs as well.
‘Ultras and Great Balls together with regulars… looks like a good deal.’
Ray also took the set of Pokeballs, though he is not low on them as he keeps at least 10 of them with him at all times.
Who knows if there is a chance that he will need to capture an entire pack of Pokemon?
Unlike the majority of trainers, Ray doesn’t mind capturing a pack and then trading some of them away to get Pokemon from other regions.
But this was not just that; this was a set, and he is saving money by buying them here.
With that in mind, he took a set and placed it in the basket.
Then he continued to move on. After pokeballs, he checked out the food supplements, like Zinc and Iron. He often uses that stuff in his food making.
After getting those, he moved to another huge section full of colourful discs, those were T.Ms!
‘Let’s see~’
The first ones were the most common types: Grass, Fire and Water.
‘Well, well…’
Ray’s eyes perked up as he saw Energy Ball available dirt cheap. This was a good move, not that he has a Pokemon for it.
‘Wait… my Haunter can use this. Besides, I should get it for the simple fact that I can use it in the future.’
For now, he inspected if it's a one-time use, as those are a waste of money.
Thankfully, it was multi-use, so he quickly dropped it into his basket before moving on to other moves.
The next one he needed and was essential to him is Solar Beam; a combo move with Sunny Day was essential.
‘I do need to get Torterra at some point. It's one of my favourite tanks… Well, Sinnoh has one of my favourite Starters, as a whole.’
Ray pondered on his favourite list of Starters. One of them he NEEDS to get is Blaziken; it's at the top, next to Charizard.
Just below them are Typlosion and Infernape alongside Torterra. Below them are the rest, which change depending on the mood.
Well, then there is Empoleon. As in the Sinnoh arc, this Pokemon has been shown around quite a bit.
‘I do wonder…’
The Junior Professor began to think about other regions, like Unova, Kalos, and Alola…
Those regions are less interesting to him. Well, Unova is growing on him, thanks to Elesa.
But still… Sinnoh was the last region he paid extra attention to before being reborn in this world.
Then his mind wondered if Ash’s companions in other regions had started travelling now. Or…
‘Honestly, this is confusing as hell.’
He quickly realised this wouldn’t get him anywhere, and he was on a supposedly doomed cruise liner! He needed to keep his mind in the game!
‘Yeah, but first, cheap stuff!’
Ray quickly returned to the T.Ms. He needs more moves!
After the grass, he checked the water ones. His eyes went through the familiar names, stopping on one his Milotic would love to have.
‘Aqua ring, quite a rare move, and dirt cheap. How rarely anyone is buying it.’
The Junior Professor confirmed the price. According to Pokemon League data, it was three times less than Hydro Pump, one of the most bought water-type moves.
However, the move is vital to Milotic’s increased survivability.
It can heal, and with the Tender Pokemon’s high defensive stat, it would be even harder for the water type to go down in a fight.
With that in mind, Ray threw the disc into his shopping basket as he went to check for more moves.
After water, it was fire. The Pallet Native saw that there were a bunch of Flamethrowers lying around. It would seem that it’s not selling that well at the moment.
‘I wonder why… oh wait… its a ship…’ Ray rolled his eyes in sarcasm, but hell, he would take it.
His Gyarados can learn Flamethrower, and so can Nidoking. He would save time if he used T.M. instead of trying to teach it naturally.
Apart from Flamethrower, there isn’t much he needs from the Fire section of T.Ms.
Instead, he moved to other less common types, skipped poison, and stuck around the flying types. He was thinking of getting Wing Attack cheaply but skipped it as it was an easy move.
Sadly, there was nothing much else there. However, where he stuck around were Psychic types; he found the signature move of Psychics…
And Teleport!
‘Oh… this IS useful.’
Teleport was a cheat move! In the game, it had quite the annoying effect, especially when trying to capture Abra. But where in the world is he right now?
This move gives him absurd freedom! He can teleport to any location he was before!
Basically, like that movie Jumper, it's a broken move that rarely anyone uses to its full advantage!
‘But I do need a proper Psychic Pokemon…’
‘Maybe that is why this move is not abused, as Psychic Pokemon and their trainers are unique individuals, like a special club of people.’
Ray chuckled for a second before dropping the pair of moves in the basket.
He then checked his basket…
‘Oof…’
The Junior Professor realised that he needed to hold back a little.
As he began walking back to the counter, he saw one move that was next to the display.
‘Sword Dance has a discount! Don’t mind if I do!’ The Pallet Native quickly added it to the basket.
After adding this one, he quickly hastened his step and walked to the counter.
As he began to take out the products, he noticed the books and magazines sections.
Gulp
Half of the magazines had his image taken from the Lt. Surge fight as the cover!
They were even advertising the new Pokemon Natures table inside of them!
‘Are they are serious!?’
Not only are they milking him, but they have turned his essay into a version of period table!?
In the normal world, chemistry has its period table, but in this world, it's Pokemon nature.
“Umm….”
“Can you sign it?” A girl asked Ray.
His gaze went to her. He noticed a blonde girl around his age holding a copy of the magazine. She showed him the natures of Pokemon on the table.
“Fine…” He sighed for a second before pulling out a black marker from his trousers' side pocket.
The girl wanted to give him a pen but she was pleased to see that he had something better.
After a quick sign, he gave her back the magazine with the Pokemon Natures inside of it.
“Many thanks!” The girl happily inspected his signature, then he looked at him. She wanted to ask a bunch of questions.
But then others realised who it was and rushed towards him.
“Ray! Ray! Is that really you!?” Another older girl exclaimed loudly.
This caused an even bigger reaction, making the Junior Professor grimace.
He thought that people aboard the ship would be behind the news, but it turns out that they are more connected than people on the land.
“Yeah. Now let me buy my stuff.” He said seriously to the overexcited girl.
“R-Right, sorry!”
Ray rolled his eyes when he saw how sorry she was. Like always girls are the over emotionals for no reason.
His comment made the cashier return to scanning the products.
Once the scanning was over, the Pallet Native looked at the total price.
‘98 thousand… I saved around 30 thousand… not bad.’
Mentally, he calculated how much he had saved on this shopping spree.
“Card.” He pulled out his golden card.
The cashier nodded as she offered the card reader.
As he was paying for his stuff, the crowd was gathering…
‘Well, this is something…’ Ray said to himself as he looked around. He could see a bunch of girls and even older individuals in their twenties.
Like seriously…
“S-Say… will you compete in the tournament aboard the Anne?” the girl asked him, hopefully the same girl for whom he had signed a magazine.
“What are the requirements for it?” He asked her curiously.
“One-on-one fights, no big Pokemon, the winner will get a Master Ball.”
Ray’s eyes perked up. Any Pokemon Game Fan knows about Master Balls. However, in the real world, while they work and do exactly as in the game, the Pokemon listening to the trainer is a different thing.
So even if one captures Legendary with the ball, he or she is not guaranteed that this Pokemon will listen; it's better not even to use it.
Unlike the game in the real world, knocking out Pokemon is a guaranteed way to capture it.
“You are not interested in?” The girl asked, she was a bit dissapointed.
“No, it's good; I will participate.” He smiled at her, making her blush a storm.
“A-Awesome!”
Murmurs erupted as half of the gathered people left all of a sudden.
They went to prepare!
