Patreon Adds Taxes July 1st - Edited

Let's try this again.

So Patreon has decided to start charging sales tax every month. My initial reaction to this was, "Alright, so just go to 4$ instead of 5$ come July" and promptly made an announcement.

Except I then realized I'd make less than I am right now in doing that as most of you are already 5$ patrons. So, ignoring my last boneheaded post, yeah, I'm still going to have to jack this up to 5$ on July 1st. Conveniently the same day the taxes go into effect. I'm sorry y'all. :(

No worry. Your work is more than worth it.

Glad to see this second post, as that way I don't need to ask you to keep it at $5 instead of dropping to $4 :-) (a little bit of tax is good, it helps society function)

I don't know if this is helpful and you may already know it but one of my other creators said this "now, they are adding some tools for us creators that will help reduce this depending on the type of content we provide, and one of those tools is determining how much of the pledges can be considered as a charitable donation from patrons to simply support a creator. given the fact that a lot of my content is available on sites like deviantart i think i have a strong case to relieve a lot of that tax."

Can attest, I've been paying VAT on Patreon for quite a while now and I'm fine with it. It could be argued that most Patreon rewards would fall into the Cultural Product category and should thus get a reduced VAT rate, but still.

They’ve already charged sales taxes in the EU for some time now! All you can do is set your own rates and let people deal with it.

It's probably to cover their rear and keep them out of court. Some nations and American states charge sales tax on electronic transactions as well, many do not. This gets messy when you have a resident of a state that doesn't charge sales tax on electronic purchases (like mine) buying a product from a state that does charge that sales tax. It gets nightmarish when you go international.

PS this tax introduction sounds like a money grab from Patreon to me. Just saying.

Already on the $5, not going away.

According to some of the other providers I've heard from -- some of the content might not be taxable everyplace -- everything varies across all tax jurisdictions. I'm just living with it, continue with $5 tier overall.

Likewise. Nothing I can do unfortunately other than pray this doesn't ruin me financially.

The sales tax depends on nation. For the U.S. alone, this means trying to create a system that takes into consideration something like 51+ different sales tax laws (massively more if you include cities). I see this as a failure waiting to happen.

You know me. Biting my nails and terrified every step of the way.

It's okay dear. Things will work out
