Supporting Dresden Codak

Some of you may know that Patreon announced, rather suddenly, a change to the way they will be charging patrons. This has already been devastating for many creators here and for certain patrons. Dresden Codak has taken a hit too, so if you’d like to continue to help us keep the lights on, keep reading. You might even find ways to help other artists you love too!

How Dresden Codak will respond to the changes to Patreon:

1. We already planned a renovation of the Patreon page to give subscribers more bang for their buck and improve fulfillment. Those changes will be will be announced in a full post in January of 2018. Please stay tuned and stay active for that update.

2. We’re looking into restructuring the reward tiers so charges to you will be transparent. We do not want you to accrue any hidden fees. Assuming Patreon goes through with these inadvisable changes, our edits will go live before any of you are charged at the end of the month and there will be a post explaining them.

3. Please keep in mind that many creators on here rely on the steadiness of income offered with the service. There are many pages hit harder than this one, but if you can afford the fees please stick by the artists you support. Even if you’re (rightfully) angry at Patreon, deleting pledges is hurting many creators right before the holiday season.

If you are still planning on leaving Patreon, here are some alternatives to support.

1. Ko-fi & PayPal tip jars:

On PayPal (https://www.paypal.me/DresdenCodak) you can give ongoing or one-time contributions of any amount to Dresden Codak or other creators.

Ko-fi (https://ko-fi.com/dresdencodak) is a tipping service for sporadic donations in units of “cups of coffee.” Payments go through PayPal, and a PayPal account is all you need to sign up. Dresden Codak’s Ko-fi will include small updates and rewards as well, so check it out.

There are no hidden fees for either of these options.

2. Buy Merchandise:

There are more traditional ways to help us keep going too. Get your hands on physical merchandise at the TopatoCo Store (https://topatoco.com/collections/dresden-codak) (and there will be new merch in the next few months, hint hint).

If you’re not into physical swag, check out Gumroad (https://gumroad.com/dresdencodak) for wallpapers for your computer, phone, tablet or social media.

3. Support without spending:

Sharing comic pages or this Patreon on social media is always a great way to show support that doesn’t cost a dime! Dresden Codak is on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/dresdencodakforever), Twitter (https://twitter.com/dresdencodak), Google Plus (https://plus.google.com/dresdencodak) and Tumblr (http://dresdencodak.tumblr.com/) if you want to share directly from our pages.

Thank you all for your continued support of Dresden Codak! Patreon has given us so much new stability in helping get comics and art out to you.

Aaron, hope you're well, and I'm looking forward to the next page of Dark Science!

Happy New Year!

If you ever decide to move to an alternative platform like <a href="https://liberapay.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://liberapay.com/</a> (no fee for pledging, just for withdrawals and deposits) I, for one, would happily follow you there. I don't know if I trust Patreon anymore.

And they rolled the idea back so I added my pledge back. Keep the PayPal amount - Happy Yule!

Yup, good news. I hope they're smarter about restructuring pledges in the future. They sure have plenty of feedback to sift through now. Some criticism is appropriate though: As much as I understand that you're very busy with DC and other projects, the $4500 goal had been reached for a long time without a noticeably quicker release schedule. Far be it from me to call you lazy, but if the situation doesn't allow it, it shouldn't be a pledge goal. Now that we're below the goal would be a good time to remove it to avoid the appearance of creating false incentives, before people reinstate their pledges due to the news that Patreon won't roll out the changes after all. Also I'm still hoping to eventually get even just a brief answer to the DMs I sent in May...

I just received the second blandly condescending response from Patreon. So I just PayPal-ed you an amount = what my total pledge for 2018 would have been. So when I drop my pledge to you, know that I'm still supporting you. I'm still going to support all my creators; I'll use alternatives for those who present them, and grit my teeth and use Patreon for those who don't.

Is there any way I can pay you specifically per Dresden Codak comic? I was a bit disappointed that your Patreon success didn't result in a much higher frequency of comics.

Hey, the urls for <a href="https://topatoco.com/collections/dresden-codak" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://topatoco.com/collections/dresden-codak</a> and <a href="https://gumroad.com/dresdencodak" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://gumroad.com/dresdencodak</a> have a extra invalid ) at the end of them.

Somebody seems to have an idea why of the fee changes and also why of the new microtransaction system. <a href="https://siderea.dreamwidth.org/1371510.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://siderea.dreamwidth.org/1371510.html</a> <a href="https://subfictional.com/my-theory-patreon-doesnt-want-to-be-a-money-services-business/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://subfictional.com/my-theory-patreon-doesnt-want-to-be-a-money-services-business/</a>

I totally agree, John. Hopefully the pressure from the base and bad press will force Patreon to back down.

In any case, I do appreciate the effort you are putting in to providing supporters with other channels.

John

I haven't yet decided what I'm going to do about these changes - I can afford the fees, but I feel that Patreon is being deeply disingenuous about this. For one thing they are double-dipping on the fees - while the rates are consistent with credit card processing fees, they are charged to supporters per-pledge instead per-transaction. Patreon hit my credit card once a month to cover my half-dozen pledges. In doing so they incur fees for one transaction, but they want to hit me for 6 transactions. For another, I feel that they are throwing smaller creators under a bus.

John
