Beautiful Girl Oyodo is being towed toward the surface - pull, pull - rather slowly, as her ascent is wholly dictated by the muscle power of her devoted friend Akashi. Although Oyodo herself carried little bulk (rather slim and underweight), her flooded lungs was a heavy toll on Akashi in her frenzy to continue with her leg strokes.
In her last moments of her consciousness, with saltwater gushing through her trachea with enormous pain, Oyodo gripped hard on a salvaged mast, a sole prize she had uncovered while on the ocean floor. With it, her very small flotilla (just two ships, counting herself) might regain a fraction of fighting power. And the Admiral might appreciate it. Yes, that was very important, much more than the value of her life.
