Well I feel like Chihaya abandoning Saki would go against her personality. At least in the way that Saver is writer the stories with her in. Maybe the way that wadatsumi did write about the cousin in his unfinished series “I’m angry and I mean it” would better fit that. So to keep consistency with the character I think that Saver did a good job letting Chihaya stay down longer.

I understand not wanting to abandon her, but she should have known that she couldn’t keep this up. If anything, she should have nudged Aya and headed back up alone, since the younger cousin always had the better chance of matching the Shrine Maiden anyway. We’d still have Chihaya cutting it close (and probably surpassing her limit already), and two other samples of Beautiful Drowners. I do hope we get a front and back shot of both now, in all their desperate glory.
I think that Chihaya did stay with Saki to show her that she and Aya wouldn't abandoning her. Which show Saki that they really do have a friendship despite being rivals. As well as that is part of Chihaya personality of not abandoning someone in need.

Eri could wait a little for the other girls i think - she got more experiance, could hold her breath longer then the others and also have fins. She has the better cards actually and should wait for the others :-)

Chihaya really should have figured this would happen, and indeed, she made some choices down here that all but guaranteed her eventual blackout. I’m curious to learn what her rationale behind staying with Saki was, but she needs to make it back up to breathe first. This is also an interesting choice by Eri, beginning her ascent without waiting to see if the competitors were following (though it’s not like they had much choice). She also has fins and air to spare in her lungs, and as much as I’m sure she also wants to take a breath, the veteran should remember who’s been down here longer. We know that the Shrine Maiden specifically put herself through self-recovery training for just this kind of situation, and she even demonstrated knowledge of Eri’s “form”, so she still seems uniquely qualified to surface without help.
