The antechamber within the cave connecting the entrance way and the rest of the tunnel Mio and Aya were in felt like it could go on forever. After a tense minute or so of swimming through the narrow passage on the other side of the antechamber, the passage suddenly went straight up at almost 90 degrees before ending at a grotto spacious enough where it was fairly easy to stretch out and to get some much-needed air if the water level was low; luckily, Mio and Aya reached it while the water line was beginning to recede. A solid five seconds of coughing and gasping went by before the two girls smiled and laughed a bit, Mio’s hearty laugh resonating in the average-sized space. Laying along the sides of the grotto’s entrance, Mio asked Aya if she was enjoying herself. Aya nodded affirmatively, comparing the cavern to another one she and Chihaya had planned on swimming through about two summers ago – it was longer and more challenging than this one, both girls making it to the other side and setting personal bests for diving at just over eight minutes each. This recollection thoroughly impressed Mio, whose smile spread a little wider and commented that she wished she was there with Aya and Chihaya during that dive. Before either could say much more, they noted the water level was rising again, setting out for the brisk three-minute trek back to the entrance.

Not long after as Mio and Aya clawed their tired selves back onto the raft and approached the shoreline near the Isuzu Inn, they noticed both Chihaya and Fumika standing towards the back entrance of the building looking on and strolling a little closer to greet their two fellow intrepid divers. Once on shore, Mio and Aya were greeted warmly, Aya telling Chihaya about the swim and her time with Mio enthusiastically. As Aya excitedly talked about the swim through the cave, Mio and Fumika smiled at each other, remembering their own enthusiasm swimming in this area both with each other and other witches after their wartime duties were over.

Fumika spoke after a while, “This has been a wonderful time. Perhaps you would like something so you can remember this summer?” As it happened, Aya and Chihaya hadn’t dived together since towards the beginning of that summer just before befriending Fumika and Mio, so the two cousins decided on an underwater photo nearby their usual diving site, followed by a nice dinner. While this summer was certainly unusual, it did end with a tinge of cheery familiarity.

Unless, of course, you consider it to actually be a "swim for maximum distance" dive, or an "ordinary" dive. (As in swim down, do some stuff down there, than swim back up.) Another 40 seconds past Dairies 20? Or was that dive closer to 7:40 than 7:20?

And it's only NOW that I notice the tag "strike witches." Oh well.

Misty May

Nope - Mio Sakamoto from the Strike Witches series. I remember reading the '1937 Fuso Sea Incident' manga featuring her and liking the mentor-pupil relationship between Mio and Fumika (Mio's commanding officer in the story).

Well.. I am always somehow Chihaya. I have looks like her more or less :) and I love to swim deep

2. I understand that commissioned works aren't cannon, but both -8- minutes AND a personal best? I guess the only way to get 8 minutes as a personal best is how you define "best." Likely a combination of about 6 minutes swimming and 2 minutes not really moving, perfectly doable for them. Perhaps it was "personal best" as in "longest cave dive?"

1, So, wait - Alexa, are YOU Mio in this story? I remember somebody requested that several months ago. If not - who?

Misty May

My breath :d

SwimDeepFreya

I enjoyed holding every minute

SwimDeepFreya

This is just me personally.........but isn’t an 8 minute breathhold kind of unrealistic........at least when moving......other than that......the story and artwork were great :)

Jake Bart

So lovely - I enjoyed writing the story and seeing the artwork I requested on here. Thanks again! :)
