Female spiders routinely eat the males to boost egg production. So yeah the males don't tend to willingly go near the females outside of mating. The male of this wesen species is apparently extremely rare since the females would eat them after mating. However she seems to love her husband and refuses her instinctual drive. They don't seem able to do the ritual to a non humanoid like a cow.
