Drunk Sketches

Here's a few experiments I made while drinking last night.  I wasn't really trying so much to make them attractive, as I was trying to make them different.  Always fishing for a new approach, eh?

Thanks! I think I'm not getting as far from the box as I'd like, but hey, one step at a time.

Good stuff! You can't go wrong by going outside the box

Thanks, Doom! Yeah, I know I tend to function more on habit than by conscious decision making. I know a lot of people have observed that my progress is as slow as a glacier, and I think that's part of why. I'm hoping to move a little faster next year. Meanwhile, I had a couple more last night and added another sketch, so I've updated the photo. Maybe I should go find some brandy...

Oh nice! I think those two upper ones are very good actually. I think they are two notches towards more realistic facetype. I’ve often said that booze gets those mental barriers down and the creating becomes more intuitive and fluent. Explains why the old masters used to be more on the brandy side..

Indeed!

Yeah, I drew the first one early on as a "baseline," then drew the other two a little later to compare against it. The idea was to draw the first one mostly using my current set of habits. Then with the others, I tried to just apply as much "nuts and bolts" stuff as I could recall out of my head, to do them "by the book," and not let my usual habits override the stuff I've learned but never use. The results were, I think, not too different from what I normally do anyway. I probably need to do more studies from photos and artists better than I if I want to get very far from my usual methods.

Can be fun though, eh?

I think I would agree with your comments concerning these sketches. Drawing while buzzed is always a crap shoot, I think. Sometimes it can work, other times not. I've always found it works best for me to do work sober, then look at what I have done afterwards whilst under the influence. At that point, sometimes I can see things not evident while working, from a different perspective, as it were. Plus, at that point, eye/hand coordination (or lack thereof) does not possibly become an issue either...
