Archive is Back Up (For Now)

Hi guys, the DNS has been reset once again for behindandysdames.com so unfortunately, old links and bookmarks are probably dead again.  But, you should be able to get in with this new link or by typing it in to your browser.

I'm not sure why after years of hosting, the DNS is now changing once a week.  Maybe it's paranoia, but I'm seriously starting to wonder if it's the hosting company's way of trying to get me to leave.  The archive has grown into a monster over the years, and right now I'm working on trying to find out just how big it actually is, so I can get a plan going with a new host.  You'd think that would be simple, but apparently it involves an SSH connection, terminal commands, and other stuff that I don't even remotely understand, so I'm trying to figure it out.  I'm also trying to get through to tech support to see if they can just tell me from their end, but now I can't seem to get through to them.  I'll keep working on it.  Thanks for hanging in there with us.

Well it is certainly possible that there is a lot of other "garbage" files laying around the site. From the perspective of the hosting company, you just have a place on their servers to store files. Your website may or may not access them or make them available to us users. Clearly the image count/size I gave is the size of the archive that is available to me as a user.

Thanks! That's actually a very helpful overview for a not-a-computer-guy like me. Bandwidth shouldn't be much of an issue, since there are only about a hundred of us who even access it. However, the size of the site has been an interesting question. This whole thing has turned into a can of worms, and I've been told by different people that it's around 2GB, and also that it's about 26GB. We're trying to get it migrated to a new hosting company, and it's been a fiasco for days. In the process, both they and I have made several attempts to make an off-site backup, as our old host won't give us one. I'm wondering if the attempts to create a backup have multiplied the size. Who knows? Anyway, I'll hopefully have more information to report soon.

Thanks, Marley! We'll get through it, for sure. As always, Mrs. Andysdames and I appreciate your support!

It looks to me like the archive site contains 4,218 JPG files, totaling just under 2GB. That is a pretty tiny by most modern standards. I don't know if you also have some video files or images in different formats. The text portions of the site are probably a lot smaller than that. Normally hosting providers can charge for "size" in two ways: The actual size all of the site takes on disk, in your case probably less than 3GB. And they also charge for bandwidth - i.e., how much data is sent from your site to your users each month. The recent Sophie picture (2020-11_HR20.1107sophie.jpg) is 2.44MB, so if 1000 people download it, you have just used 2.44GB of bandwidth. If a user comes back and looks again tomorrow, they are counted twice. Your hosting provider can probably tell you how much bandwidth you are using in a typical month.

I don't understand any of that stuff either. I want to thank you for working so hard to keep us satisfied and in the loop. It's a shame you have to do this because I bet you'd much rather be drawing your gorgeous girls. Thanks again, Marley 😊
