2019-11-22 03:20:07 +0000 UTCWhat appeared to cause the starship rupture is the same reason why propane tanks are never overfilled. It looked like the upper dome failed when the liquid nitrogen "hydrauliced" against the dome stressing the welds beyond their yield limit to weld failure. With this observation, I would suspect the cause to be a gauging issue rather than a structural flaw though they may be a compound fault. This is the first prototype, subject to destructive testing much like NASA's early test vehicles. I look forward to the successes of the next iterations of this design.
2019-11-21 16:12:14 +0000 UTCOne other factor influencing the timing of human flight in Starships would be FCC and/or NASA approval for carrying crew. That requires quite a few safe launches on the stack before, say, the dearMoon mission or a lunar lander. That timeline would certainly go faster if in, say, 2021 Starship was ready for a rapid series of launches on Starlink satellites.
