Probably because the 24 hr return is exactly what you will have to do in a moon or mars landing. In fact, very little reconditioning may take place on the moon or on mars, so I expect this is his way of gaining from that goal to pay off on the next goal. (Of which would be to refuel and return to earth from mars. The moon may not be so much of an issue for Starship.) Elon ratchets everything he does. It's called an exponential growth curve and it gets a colony on mars before Elon is too old to go.

Humans. The ONLY “point” is to satisfy our curiosity about what can be achieved. It’s like breaking the 4-minute mile barrier. What economic sense did that make, and how much money, sweat, and time went into achieving that goal? Sometimes, “We do these things not because they are easy but because they are hard.”

Ever since Elon announced the 24 hour goal I've wondered, what's the point? I think Elon likes the idea as a demo of how reusable a booster can be, but does it make sense otherwise? You make a thorough analysis, and even for a busy 2020 they have over a month to replenish a booster. Allow for a crash, or one needing extensive refurbishment, and they still have a couple of weeks. They must be making more, to have a cushion for crashes/expendables. And at least one FH center core. Over all, there's very likely an increased cost to cut it to 24 hours, and I don't see the cost benefit.
