Four Years Late | June 2021 Update

I had (and still have) the bad habit of promising videos that I don't end up making. In 2016, I only ended up making 6 of the 8 "Best Anime of 2015" videos, I only made 2 of the 5 "A Guide to Anime Music Composers" (Kevin Penkin once called me out on this when he came to Tokyo), I only made 1 of the 3 "Anime Has a Bright Digital Future" documentaries, and I only made 1 of the 2 parts of the Studio Trigger spotlight.

The way I run the channel is entirely based on "Do I have an argument and do I have the sources?" Only then will a video end up getting made. But making subsequent parts to videos are much harder, because I've pretty much exhausted all the interesting points already.

In the case of Studio Trigger, I focused on Yoh Yoshinari and Hiroyuki Imaishi in the 2016 video, but I wanted to acknowledge that the studio is much more than just these two directors. So I promised a Part 2. Problem was that I never actually had a concise argument beyond, "Here's some other cool people at Trigger."

But now, four years later, I finally have an argument and a show to base it around. Akira Amemiya's SSSS.Gridman and Dynazenon are entirely different from anything you'd expect from the studio. And so that's why I wanted to take this opportunity to finally create that once promised video. SSSS.Dynazenon and Studio Trigger | Anime Studio Spotlight will be this month's video!

I'm also trying not to announce anything until I've actually started making it. Probably for the best!

Thanks, as always!
Callum

P.S. I've opened up a business email on the channel. There may be sponsored content on the channel in the future, but it will always be in addition to normal videos, rather than replacing them. For instance, if a sponsored video came out in June, there would just be two June videos. I'm pretty strict on making sure the content isn't affected, so don't worry about any of that! I'm getting enough offers that I can basically swat away anyone who's not cool with editorial independence.

Comments

I heard some of the dub of Gridman and it was so offputting because the dialogue in the Japanese version just feels so much quieter and natural. It's so un-anime in a lot if ways.

The Canipa Effect

Gridman is so unusually directed for an anime series. It's directed more like an art house movie or prestige TV than basically anything else (maybe WEP). Would love to hear about this.
