Unemployed! Oh No! | August 2021 Update

Oops! I forgot to make one of these updates last month. To cover what was going on in July, I lost my full-time job at OTAQUEST, and instead of rushing into something new, I wanted to take a bit of time to try out making YouTube videos full-time.

That's where I'm at now. Unemployed and making videos. It's actually pretty exciting since I've got a load of ideas that I've never had the time to work on before. Previously, I've been working on YouTube in my spare time during the evenings and weekends (and sometimes during a lunch break), but I'm not really sure how much I can make when it's all the time. That's something we'll have to find out together!

The next video (audio preview available to $15+ Patreons) is called The Recipe for Modern Anime. It's a cool title about compositing in anime. My process usually goes like this:

Think of topic -> Think of cool title -> Make Video

I won't make a video if I can't figure out a way to sell the idea to the almighty YouTube algorithm. "Compositing in anime" just isn't going to get the clicks, since most people don't even know what it is. And I need the clicks since, after all, I'm unemployed. Beyond that, I'm working on a couple of things. A Rick and Morty video, a few articles, a "reaction video" where I update some information from a few years back, and some more animation spotlights. The only thing I haven't worked out is what order these will be released.

Thanks again for all of the help!

Callum

This is possibly a hot-take, but I actually think most books about the anime industry are out-dated. Even recent ones are more retrospective. Right now, I think Sakugablog is doing a great job at giving art-focused discussions, but otherwise I mostly just read every interview that comes out.

Would it be possible to make a video talking about good starting points to go learn about the anime industry. Books, articles, etc. Blood, Sweat, and Pixels comes for example.

Not that I know about, but it is an interesting topic~

That sucks being laid off but hoping you can make lemonade out of lemons.

Are there much articles on the process of how anime merch is created?

Make a catchy series name then use the fun title name you want, that's a good way of getting around the algorithm as you put the series name in fount (like expired milk with Smitty and Range test with 9 hole reviews)
