2023-10-27 01:46:33 +0000 UTCI mean you really can’t find success in the west without a “company” either. We just call them labels. In Korea the companies are the labels. But the blueprint for this borrows a lot from the boy group process in the US of the 80’s and 90’s. New Kids On The Block, *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys all went through similar like training camps. It’s just it’s not like a program you can be in for years. So while the west doesn’t have anything comparable the western boy groups of the 80’s and 90’s contributed to the process we know today in Korea. The Korean companies just took it to the next level. Also I would imagine you can be an underground performer and get picked up by a company in Korea.

2023-07-07 22:57:35 +0000 UTCa huge part of promoting kpop groups is through music shows and tv appearances, and it's really difficult to get spots for these appearances if you aren't from a big company. Shows in general will always prioritize the bigger labels and groups, so it's extremely risky to make your own company since the big companies essentially have a monopoly on the industry and people are less likely to take risks when it takes so much work and time to be able to become an idol. People also join the bigger companies because they're more trustworthy than a no-name company that is a lot more likely to scam you since they don't have a reputation to uphold. Also big companies give you better producers, editors, teachers, and have a lot more money at their disposal to make good music and MVs, which is really important in this era where groups are held to a higher standard for quality of both of those things.

2023-07-07 22:31:36 +0000 UTCI think a big part of why they have to go through a company is because the idol system is a big influence in Korea and the companies train you to be an idol, not just a singer, rapper, or dancer. idol image is important as well. like Stray Kids and other JYP groups aren't allowed to cus or do things that will "tarnish" their name. every company is different in what they let their idols do but for the most part, they all have to same base rules
