Master and Apprentice. The idea is that Sith beforehand were weak and ineffective. But working from the shadows they could plan their revenge on the Jedi. If you could have two mother fuckers that could take down several Jedi then that is worth the title of being a Sith in Bane's eyes. Hence they take the title of Darth which denotes them as a Sith Lord, while the master is The Dark Lord of The Sith.
