This came out when we were still deployed in the Middle East, and with that vocalized score toward the end and the military showing up to save the day only after all the death and sorrow the parallels seemed obvious in theaters.

A quick rundown if you don’t know what the Heroes Journey is: a hero gets a call to action- something that calls on them to step up and face a struggle and in doing so they begin the path of becoming a hero. The call to action here was the woman wanting to go back to her kids in the beginning and nobody chooses to go with her. Nobody answers the call to action. In the end it’s shown that she survived, meaning if the main character had gone with her and taken his son they probably would have both survived too. But he chooses to stay out of fear for his and his sons life, and that dooms him to the final scene. The call is denied, and no hero is made.

Coming out of the movie theater, after the surround sound system made the helicopter during the credits sound like it was flying over the theater for REAL. Half expected to see it flying above the theater parking lot!

2023-08-15 05:29:36 +0000 UTCNot gonna lie, I hate this movie. It's phenomenal, and I love it, but that ending haunts me, and it's such an unforgettable ending that it tends to pop into my head out of nowhere. I love watching it, but I always stop right before they run out of gas.
