Being a Democrat and voting in a democratic election are two separate things. A democratic election just involves taking votes from the people— now technically we have a Democratic Republic, not a Direct Democracy where each persons single vote is worth as much as anyone else’s. We have that in the popular vote, but that doesn’t really matter with the Electoral College in place, where the people vote for a representative who will then have voting power for major elections. Now, EC representatives are SUPPOSED to vote in line with how their state is voting, but they don’t actually have to, and as you know individual votes in a state vary wildly from person to person and sometimes county to county, the Representative is just supposed to vote along with their states majority.
