Man how did I miss all of the wonderful Bosstones jokes initially? I love them so much I can’t believe I didn’t notice them before 😂 I also like the opening with the context that Bojack sat so close he internalized that advice forever, like how they had intended it to be taken initially. You really do see him following that advice later on, even later in this season (hell him trying to ignore what happened in New Mexico shows that mindset, with him fucking up severely after he “went back”). So interesting that they set all of those things up in the beginning of this season and you still see echoes of these actions and his traumatic childhood even until the very end all those years later

2025-05-15 23:58:31 +0000 UTCalso- my thoughts on the opening scene- i always took it as bojack hearing "there's nothing for you behind you, all that exists is what lays ahead" and using it to justify him not reflecting on his past behavior, mistakes or how his childhood truly actually affects him. he uses it as a crutch, but he doesn't take the time to understand how the trauma makes him act. and so he's only ever looking forward for the next thing to fill the void with. alcohol, sex, drugs, whatever movie that will hopefully fulfill him in some way, instead of actually unpacking the ways that the past is affecting his present. i also never thought it was good advice because of that, which then made sense to me when secretariat ended up taking his life. he couldn't let himself face anything that he had been through or his past and the thing he depended on for his future had no future anymore, and the present was too devastating for him to handle. i always took it like he was telling bojack to ignore the past and ignore the ways it affected you and to just keep trying to run away from it. and then all the way in season 6 is when bojack does therapy and actually does start to unpack parts of his past (with alcohol abuse) and starts healing. doing the opposite of what secretariat said. anyways ramble over, just some thoughts!
