House Party 0.3.3.1 Released (Performance Optimizations Only)

Hey guys!

For any of you that were having performance issues with 0.3.3.0, I've released 0.3.3.1 today that should ease up on the system quite a bit and make for much smoother game-play.  You can find more information and the downloads here:

I may do that if it comes to it, but right now my main goal is to help the game run smoother on people who are having performance issues, so if the problem persists beyond that build I will look into it more for sure.

Eek! Games

Well, can try that but I had the same issue in the previous build (patreon only build) - maybe worth peppering in debug logs for analysis, but up to you...

I should also mention I've got updated code on my end. I've seen some weird things happen in some builds also that just resolve themselves. It's not happening for me here, so hopefully it will clear up when I put the new build out.

Eek! Games

No, because I can get a full few feet away from that door here, and click it just fine. It's got a good range on it for me. I tried to emulate what you were doing in the video and couldn't get it to fail once.

Eek! Games

Nope, not really sluggish at all. I'm guessing it might be distance check related.

Andy L

Hmm. Yeah I see the couple of places you are having an issue. How is the game running? Sluggish at all? I'm thinking it might be tied in with performance. I am working on a new build right now that I am due to put out very soon. Hopefully it will clear the issue up for you.

If you could just do a quick video of it failing on you, that would probably be helpful!

Eek! Games

If you put lots of Debug.Log's into a future build, (or even better have a hotkey that renders the debug logs on screen) I can record a video of me playing it for you, so you can see where it starts failing.

Andy L

Check out the demo videos I've posted on Youtube and let me know if you see a difference between what's happening when you click on things and when I am doing so in the demo. You'll notice I can easily click on anything in all of the demos with no problems.

Eek! Games

Well what's weird is that I'm not perceiving an issue with clicking. I click on anything once, and that menu pops right up. I did have one other user say he had an issue where he had to click multiple times to get the dialogue to come up, but this is not happening for most users. I'm not sure what is causing it. Yes, it's just a simple camera raycast. Nothing fancy.

Eek! Games

That's why I'm making this suggestion. It'll go a long way to determining what the game thinks you've actually got selected. Otherwise, when you encounter such a bug you just end up spam clicking until something happens (which isn't a great gameplay experience). Then again, if picking is rock solid, then people can happily do their pixel hunting without being cheesed out of clicks.

Andy L

Hmm, they're nuts! Currently I think you have an issue with picking. I've had clicks not register at all even when I'm clicking directly on a person. I've also had clicks register from way out of bounds (e.g. I'm in the kitchen i can click the garage doors through a wall). How are you doing picking? I'm assuming its just a camera raycast with the mouse coords to a collider that isn't the players layer?

Andy L

Thanks for your support! I actually had a mechanism like this in the very early game, but users felt it detracted from realism, so I ended up pulling it out. I may at some point put it back in. It seems that users are very split between getting a lot of indicators for help and figuring things out on their own. I might end up making these options within the game.

Right now 0.3.3.1 is the latest build. I usually put out new builds around the 1st and the 15th of each month. This month has been a little different because I am responding to a lot of feedback from the public release, but the coming months should be business as usual.

Eek! Games

Hi there, played the public version, became a patreon. One suggestion that will vastly improve the game from a usability perspective: get an outline shader on the go and make it show when you have your mouse over something you can interact with. It will greatly help with determining what is and what isn't pickable.

Andy L

Un a somewhat related note, are there builds further available for patreons (I read that you stagger them for patreons, its just that I'm new and can't find it). Either way, keep up the good work! Cheers.
