File Delivery System Options

Please Read Before Answering

Hey folks, I've been exploring integrating Patreon into the website and have also become aware that myminifactory.com now allows 500mb downloads ( a little borderline but I can work with it). I want to get an idea on how people like getting files but I want to add these details below for your consideration.

gamescape3d.com : I have found a cheapish plug-in that allows me to give products directly. So Ideally I may be able get people products and all you would have to do is log in to your download page.

myminifactory: The only draw back is that I would likely have to chop up months into multiple downloads.

I'm just getting a pulse here, I'll probably just add options at worst.

That's so great to hear. Keep the great job, your models are awesome :)

Thanks for pushing me on this, I've been looking into it and it looks like it could be a superior option to MMF. The uploading and product creation is greatly improved from the last time I tried them out.

Thanks a bunch for your input Valerie:)

I like going through your website or MMF. They both make my life easier.

Also thanks for the heads up about slow times, I will still have all the other download options available if I open something there:)

Thanks for the comment Maggie. Yes those reasons have been a big part of me staying off it. I'll look at it as advertising instead of double paying for the same service and see how it goes. The time spent on posting products will be the biggest issue more than the money.

I find MMF can be very slow at times and I don't like that it charges extra for you to host files, especially when you have a website of your own and other resources that can be used for distributing files.

ah that is good to know. All my CS on dropbox has been failed download errors. With mediafire it was slow dl in certain areas. I paid double for dropbox and it was the stuff that you mentioned. Not complaining, just saying that seems to be the deal with dropbox.

Thanks a bunch for the info Vincente, I'll go over and see what there set up looks like these days. It's been more than a year since I really looked at them, other than as a customer:)

Another vote for DriveThru here. Other 3D building KS have setup their models there (Black Scrolls). From the consumer side, it works great.

Thanks for the comments Eric, I've started organizing my stuff to upload there, I agree it looks like it is an institution at this point.

Another thought about MMF, being on the site will make it easier for people to stumble across your store while searching for items. I know I've found a dozen merchants that I'd never heard of while looking for stuff on MMF.

I like MMF for a couple of reasons. First I like being able to redownload stuff whenever. I back up all my files but this is just an additional redundancy. Size, since MMF is a larger company it's less likely to just go away. I've seen several small web stores just disappear when the owner got bored of the site or changed jobs.

Eric Jackson

Thanks for the comment Arman, you are right that the website doesn't do great when a bunch of folks go there. I've noticed it even getting in the back door. I think MMF maybe a much less painful route. I'm beginning to suspect that a more significant improvement may require a full migration to another service. So there are some issues that can be helped by pushing some traffic off site:)

Thanks a bunch for the input Maledrake. I do know about the larger downloads, it is not larger cost. Some of the modelers I know have had mixed results on them delivering large files. I think once you're dealing with gigs there are more issues. I just want to hold off on that part short term.

I've enjoyed using MMF with a few of the miniature patreons. Seems to work well. I have struggled with sites like Google G-Drive and Sync. Sorry to say this but using your site GameScape3D has also been slow and difficult at times. Hopefully if you go the MMF route you get a lot of new traffic.

Arman

MMF: I would say do it! Do it now! Look at it like an ad for your patreon and also a cheap storefront that generates "free" passive income for you on designs you already have made your patreon income off of. If all they charge is 10% of the turnover + 20 USD a month, that is a very good deal for you as long as you have quality designs to sell. And you do have that. Just make sure to price your minis at a reasonable market value on MMF and not too cheaply. The file size at MMF is not capped at 500Mb, at least not for Titan Forge, the fantastic plants KS and several others, who have single zip files for a whole month at a time @1.5Gb+ in size through the "objects shared with me" function. Of course, it might be a more expensive option for the creators.

Maledrakh

That's not to bad, and certainly cheaper than paying for ad space for that year. MMF is just getting bigger and bigger too, tremendous growth in the year + I've been using them. I think you are right and the community certainly seem to like the idea.

Yeah and their site has a neat download manager that works with browsers. Can resume as well. Nothing worse than Dropbox "dropping" after 1GB and you need to start all over again. Now I know why its called "Drop" box.

It looks like a promising site for data transfer, I'll take a look at using them for my backup when I fully hop off of mediafire.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out:)

Hi Rob, thanks for the comment and yeah I hear you. I guess the big picture is how many people out there will not look at me because I'm NOT on MMF. The cost to me is basically a second website ($250 a year)+10% off the top. It's hard to know what 10% is and if it will be applied to earnings I wouldn't have otherwise. My thoughts are that it won't kill me to try it for a year. I'm about as large as I want to be, so I don't see much short term downside as long as it increases traffic overall.

With MMF your files are saved to you account so you don't have to download them all at once. Also avoids the 'oh poop I missed the release because of X'. Several of the 'big guys' have moved to MMF. My concern is how much does the creator (you) have to sacrifice for convince. IMO the best way to keep this sustainable is by putting as much of the income in the creators pocket and not the middle mans.

Mega is very good: https://mega.nz/pro

I've uploaded a couple free models there, it doesn't work for me, upload times for building size data is no good. They are set up to sell a wide selection of products which makes product creation slow as well, if they set up an interface specifically for 3d models I'll have another look.

I'm fine with either

Hi I'm fine with either, also have you considered DriveThruRPG?
