Added 2016-11-13 13:43:18 +0000 UTCI'm fascinated by the use of Christian religious imagery in the earliest Zelda games. While the use of crosses were probably purely aesthetic designs to indicate an undisclosed religion rather than specifically Christianity, it's fun to think about as a fan of the series.
Perhaps such imagery suggests that Hyrule, now in a state of decline, has lost ties to it's rich history and cultural identity. With the kingdom in decay, and the Triforce missing, much of Hylian society has taken up worship of new Gods in place of Hylia and the Three Goddesses. Playing with religion can be tough, but I think there's a lot of potential in dealing with the subject, and have Hyrule rediscover it's previous beliefs during Link's adventure.
But yes, I'm just a silly fan.
Also, this is our very first Patreon post! It's a good example of the kinds of commentary and larger image size patrons will get from here on out!

It's very possible! Interestingly, I've noticed that Link's Champion Gear in Breath of the Wild seems to bear the image of the Master Sword. I personally think the game takes place in the Downfall Timeline, so that's kind of a neat coincidental connection type thing. I actually just posted a big post about why I theorized that on my tumblr, including a bit more elaboration on the religion thing too.

And huh, something that just occured to me while reading your post... the Christian cross also resembles an extremely simplified way of drawing a Sword pointed down... just expanding on your ponderings of new gods what if the Hero or rather the Master Sword became a new focus of worship? Heck, given that officially the original Zelda game is in the Downfall era following after the death of the Hero of Time fighting Ganon perhaps the Hylians have come to view his death and his attempt to defeat Ganon as some sort of sacrifice when the Goddesses abandoned them?
