Q&A, windy walking edition (rough cut and early view)

Hi Everyone,

I made a simple Q&A video to mark passing 2^21 subscribers.  I decided to try a stark contrast in style from the usual faceless, minimalist, animated style characterizing the channel and just go for a walk filming on my phone.

In terms of sound, there's an unfortunate amount of wind at some points, and a few small airplanes decided that day that the airspace above these trails was a wonderful place to practice going around in circles.  But I'm hoping this sort of fits in with the oh-hey-we're-just-on-a-casual-walk-together vibe, and that the content is what matters anyway.

----

Also, I still have the dartboard from the collaboration with Numberphile, and I'm thinking I'll send it to a Patron, if any of you would like it as a memento of your support.

If you're interested, feel free to fill out this form, and then 48 hours from this post I'll choose a random patron from the list to send it to.

All the best,
-Grant

I believe a new batch has been ordered, but they will probably not arrive in time for Christmas purchases.

I’m waiting for the Fourier Series Socks to be available in size L. Do you have some insight as to when these will be restocked?

School math is teaching kids to be cooks. 3B1B is teaching them to be chefs. The first can only follow recipes, the second can create them. That is the difference between gaining insight, and learning by rote. My parental advice is teach your kids to be chefs. P.S., Is a double-windsor included in your knots? If so I'm in.

I'm watching your video with Vincent Rubinetti playing in the background :]

Hi Akshay, That's touching to hear. I'll probably keep up the occasional Q&A, in one form or another. At the moment, I'm feeling slow enough on the production of core content that I'm hesitant to introduce something like a vlog, even a casual one. As I get my act together and get back into a more regular cadence of 3b1b content, perhaps more fun side things will be in order. -Grant

Hi Grant. I remember the feeling when I asked my teacher to give me intuitive or geometrical understanding of some topic in Math, calculus for example, but he asked me not get into it and indirectly admitted that he didn't know. When I came across your videos I wish I could tell you how much it meant to me. It wasn't just general fascination about Math but I felt my unfulfilled desire to "see" the concepts finally coming true. I don't know how appropriate is what I am going to say, but now I have kind of started looking up to you not only as a person who explains Math concepts well but I am also intrigued to know you. I don't know if it's sounding vague. To put it simply, it's like wanting to watch a vlog of a celebrity whom we adore. Now obviously I am not demanding you to start vlogging, but I am saying it will great if you somehow could show us the other side, maybe a little personal side. I am not sure if I am the only one to expect this.

Love it. Part of me is disappointed that it's not longer, but… well, brevity is a good thing.

Thanks Calvin!

It's a good point, and I'll admit that I'm not the most in touch with the history here. My understanding, though, is that a lot of linear algebra operations were discovered before they were formulated in our modern language. Gaussian elimination and Cramer's rule, for example, are linear algebra algorithms discovered multiple hundreds of years ago.

Congrats! Your videos are such a delight to watch.

I'm under the impression that linear algebra - as a topic - didn't really come to the fore until relatively recently. For example, if you look at the wikipedia article, things really don't get going until the middle of the 19th century with Grassman and Hamilton. The notion of eigenvalue itself is barely 100 years old.

Nate

Agree with the above.. nice to see and hear you in this more informal setting. Makes a great contrast to your usual excellent content. Even though I often end up "all at sea" trying to follow it! My bad!

Great video! The more personal approach was a nice touch.

Brian Michalowski

If you're uncomfortable with it, I can remove that field, but of course, I'll end up following up later if your name is drawn.

Love it. (But then again, how could I NOT)

Isn't it a little insecure to just type my address into a Google form?

Nick Sullivan

Whoops! Give me one moment...

I tried filling out the form but it won't let me. "This form can only be viewed by users in the owner's organization."
