[Patron-Only Feed] Dreamin' up a storm

There were A LOT of Links drawn this month!

Anyway, we're at the end of April! Woo, another month survived. There hasn't been a lot of uploads in the last week or so, but there are still a lot of works inside the Dropbox Archive (which you have access to if you're a $7 Patron or higher) so be sure to check it out! You even have access to the previous months.

You can find the Dropbox link from the Featured Tags on our front page.

So this month in review...

I'd have liked to post an additional $3 illustration or two, and one more batch of NSFW Sketch Suggestions. I know 2 batches is still an acceptable number, but still.

A handful of drawings completely bypassed Early Access, having been immediately posted onto Twitter. Which is something that I, admittedly, don't think anyone's going to have too big of a problem with. But I think that was largely responsible for the few $3 rewards.

I've always had a tricky time determining what, among my work, constitutes as finished art, because so much of it is so rough & organic. But I've recently generally tried to keep the $3 rewards to higher quality, finished works. So some of the sketchier things are often just left in the Dropbox Archive. In my mind, it's a question of whether that content has enough quality to warrant devoting an individual post to (as I used to do, but like, every single day).

But after brief discussion concerning it in the Patreon Discord channels, I think I should widen the range of what I consider acceptable to show off -- not everything needs to be the most refined work of art for the $3 Reward tier.

I've been playing Dreams a lot...

Perhaps "playing" is not quite correct -- it may be more accurate to say that I have been CREATING in Dreams. A lot.

For those unaware, Dreams is from the same developers as LittleBigPlanet, and it recently entered early Access. It is a game that is about creation; architecture, art, music, sculpture, and video games.

If there's one thing I've learned from my time with Dreams, it's: Making things takes a long time. Everything I make takes a lengthy stretch of time to accomplish, so the best we can do is make little steps towards progress at a time. This philosophy is, perhaps, something I should bring into my major body of work.

Making things takes time. And that's okay?

My first creations were pretty awful, but the more time you spend on something, the better you get at accomplishing that. Having just seen this phenomenon in action, I should expect this to be the same when tackling new mediums, like comics. Which is to say, maybe I should start on that so I can actually get good at them.

Anyway, here's some of what I've been making in Dreams:

Elayne has been an INCREDIBLY difficult character to translate into 3D, whether it's because of her outfit design, or her breasts, or her hair... So much surprising complexity. I think this work in 3D, however, has helped me better visualize what things are like in 3D spaces. I still have trouble with faces (especially from the side), but having rendered one, I've got a better understanding of what they look like.

That being said, I think Elayne's face is a bit too flat here.

My Imp - the red cursor with a face -- has a smug face, so I can't help but see it as Melanie.

I think it might be cool to get a good enough handle on Dreams to use it for creating more art in the future. Some people are already using it just to create art. I've been streaming a lot of my Dreaming on Twitch. https://www.twitch.tv/brellom

Anyway, I want to thank you all for your support! I hope to make the next month even better than this one, so we should spend some time thinking about what to do next. Let me know if you have any ideas, or would like to see something specific in next month's Concept Art & Discussion thread, etc.

Don't forget to eat & sleep!

Comments

Yeah, it's got a high level of fidelity. Though I think it's leaning towards the uncanny valley now, so I should probably redo it much simpler.

Mel is the most helpful helper. Also that Elayne face came out amazing. I'm astonished you managed to do that in Dreams.
