I still can't believe this happened. That mistake should cost them dearly. Not just the cost of the snake, but emotional damage. Elected officials chose to make this a law regardless of how mature the keepers of these snakes are. Yet we have all these feral cats out destroying wild populations of birds but its okay to do. Ignorance breeds fear. :(

I really love how reasonable and fair your approach is. I'm in school for biology and I had hoped to work for FWC in the future. I was second guessing myself after I watched the videos but maybe I and others can change the organization from within.

Sorry I'm late I just wanted to say I've always found it infurating that reptiles are always the subject of laws and restrictions when feral cats and dogs are 100x's mor damaging.

Will there ever be an official inquiry into this debacle, with a view to remove the decision-makers involved and find better or different ways to deal with situations like this in the future..? I’m hoping that the public outcry will at least prompt an investigation. Even purely from a political standpoint, it can’t look good for FWC…because it’s unlikely that just the fact that it was an inhumane, completely unnecessary act will matter to the people involved (who we all know have an agenda based on making money and not protecting wildlife).

I’m new to the reptile community; my 8yo son and I have been volunteering at a reptile rescue for six months, and we’ve since welcomed our first snake to our family, but before that I wasn’t familiar with this world at all. My son and I are the only “reptile people” among our family and friends. So my question: Aside from donating to USARK, what can I do to be a good representative of the reptile community?

For the first time I can remember this horrible incident has actually seemed to swing the public perception of reptiles and reptile keepers in a positive way in that the public is feeling great sympathy for the animals lost and the owner of those sadly lost snakes. Do you feel that this sympathy and this outpouring of goodwill towards the individual who tragically lost their animals will impact the reptile community as a whole and people will begin to see us less as weirdos who like to keep snakes and instead see us as what we’ve truly been all along; loving caretakers of wonderful and amazing animals! Obviously I’m not intending to diminish what happened and this is a tragic and utterly horrific event that I wish never occurred so if it seems like I’m doing so in any way I apologize.

Do you think there will be any ramifications for the actions of these individuals/ the organization that did this?

New patreon here, I’m saddened that this is the first post I’m interacting with since becoming a supporter. Since seeing that video I have been spending a lot of time with my scaly baby as I’m sure a lot of people are. I’d hope me being from the U.K. I don’t have to experience anything like this. My question is I’m just wondering if there is a reptile support system between different states for in instances where someone needs to get rid of an animal quickly when they are prohibited they’d be able to call out for people in the group to aid in helping relocate?

No real questions, but the actions of FWC largely played into our decision to move our family out of Florida and up to Indiana. Really heartbreaking what we keep seeing. My cheeky question would be why do we think it’s acceptable to have real estate developers on a board for a fish and wildlife commission and no biologists or herpetologists. It’s almost like they don’t actually care about the Florida ecosystem when they kill peoples pets who are secure in captivity and not a threat to wildlife but approve clearing more wetlands/forests and approving the filling in of gopher tortoise burrows to build yet another luxury apartment complex.

Cognitive Whirlwind

Defs horrifying either way, in my eyes, the behaviour of both beings and organisations often repeats until met with sufficient consequences or an incompatible alternative behaviour is instilled. If there’s not enough of a response, this will happen again, guaranteed.

As someone not living in Florida what can I do to help in this situation? I'm sure supporting USARK/USARKFL are the best options, I just would like to help in a more active way from where I'm at.

T-Swizzle

I personally think that the event has been too directly tied to heightened restrictions when the restrictions aren’t the direct reason the FWC committed such an awful atrocity.

Sydney

I won't be able to watch live due to work, but: Who do you believe legislators ought to be working with to solve this ongoing issue of government overreach? On a more personal note to this case, it straight up feels malicious. I saw some of the clips of the interaction I think on Camp Kenan. FWC just seemed wholly unwilling to even want to work with this keeper. If this is universal behavior that's horrifying, but it's hard to believe that's the case considering all the other keepers in Florida.

TheNihilistEnthusiast

What is the value of restrictions on keeping exotic reptiles in Florida, and what should the responses be to the Holy Thursday Massacre in relation to these restrictions while also addressing the horrific nature of the event and it’s root causes such as sheer incompetence and lack of proper procedures within the FWC?

Sydney

I cant believe this ,it is just heartbreaking, my prayers to the owner and dad of these snakes
