Early Access Video - We Have Been Completely Wrong About Snapping Turtles!

Hi Patrons, Jason here!

1.   Thank you so much for supporting Clint's Reptiles. You guys are amazing.

2.   As you have early access to these videos, please let us know if you catch any mistakes or export issues. They are bound to happen, and I would love to catch them before they get published for the unforgiving world to spot. You are our first line of defense!

3.   Sometimes we need to schedule the release of a video. When that happens, YouTube forces us to change the video status Unlisted to Private. Unfortunately, that cuts off your access. We try to delay this until Friday night (Mountain time zone), so be sure to utilize your early access before then.

4.   I try to get these Early Access Videos uploaded as early as Monday every week. Trying to maximize the early in Early Access Videos :). That doesn't always happen, but that is my goal.

5.   Comments in Patreon = I will see. Comments in YouTube = Clint will very likely see (and sometimes me too).

6.   You guys rock!

Early Access Video - We Have Been Completely Wrong About Snapping Turtles!

I had a large wild caught female snapping turtle over 30 years ago. I kept her in a large stock tank. I could do anything I wanted to with her when she was in the water. When I took her out of the water and placed her on the floor, see turned into a completely different animal. She would snap and I could not get behind her, she kept turning to face me. At the time I thought she got so defensive because she did not feel safe when she was not in the water.

I found your channel after learning about the exotics hobby a couple years ago, and I've especially enjoyed the phylogeny series, as it's really helped me understand and appreciate how dynamic and diverse species can be. I've considered joining your patreon for a while now, but this video has absolutely moved me. Your compassion and dedication to understanding these animals is so inspiring. You've made me seriously consider becoming a biologist. Thank you for all the work that you do and I would love to see you test this theory out!

Though I’ve been a fan of Clint’s for a few years now and loved watching his content for whatever reason this video is what made me be a supporter on Patreon. I would love to see this theory about snapping turtles get tested! Huge admirer and honored to help with my small contribution

That's amazing :)

I’ve lost animals before and it hurts. I have a ball python I’ve had for 24 years and a red tail boa I’ve had for 20 years. I can’t imagine my life without them. And, yes reptiles have personalities.

It’s so hard to lose the animals we love. We lost two elderly animals this year. Still grieving. I’m so sad for you that Bubba passed away. I’ve been around common snappers all my life I’ve never handled one. But even when I’ve been close to some in the wild they’ve never done the open mouth “if you try to eat me I will remove body parts” response. I now realize they were watching while I was watching them…very cool! I’d be terrified if a giant grabbed me up in a position that was scary and try bite that giant myself!

I have a soft spot for snapping turtles. As a child, me and my siblings were completely obsessed with turtles. Many turtle toys, games and visits to the aquariums followed. My little brother discovered the existence of snapping turtles. He dressed up at the next fancy dress opportunity as a snapping turtle. He tied a washing basket to his back, crawled around and bit people's ankles 😅🤣

Great video. Now we need others to put your handling method to the test and see what their results are. It's generally accepted with other reptiles that handling them poorly and bad interactions with them make them more defensive, so why wouldn't that be any different with snapping turtles?

RIP Bubba! I saw a snapping turtle this summer and it made my day, amazing animals!

Swim free, Bubba Chunk. You are so missed. 🌈🐢🏵️

Our present snapper is three years old. Memorial day weekend, he had to do three animal shows. The week before he met nine classes of children. We believe he met about 400 people in that short period without incident. Our visitors have been very generous lately and have donated enough money that I am upgrading him to a larger tank.

I am very sorry for the loss of your snapping turtle. As an educator at a nature center, I’ve kept several snapping turtles from hatchlings. They all grew up to be very nice. As long as we made sure the people did not bang on the glass. Unfortunately, the boss always made us release the turtle once it got bigger than my fist. I also have friends who do public education with a full size Florida snapper. The snapper walks around on the grass, totally unconcerned about people walking around him.

This has been discussed many times in some of our Patreon Extras and/or our Podcast. But yes, it would be fun to cover a mythical creature in October.

and consider the fact that dragons are hexapodes

Hey Jason, any chance for Clint to do a Dragons special for October? Something that could explain some of the mechanical and structural parts, such as flight, dexterity, vision?l. Or at least hypothesize how a dragon should move or function before the, "because it's magic," argument takes over. Really appreciate everything you guys do, and if it is done bonus points for Flight of Dragons Reference, Reign of Fire, and D&D.

Sorry for your loss, Clint. Bubba seemed like really sweet guy. I love this breakthrough in turtle care! Hopefully it will change public opinion of these beautiful friends. Keep up the good work!
