From Arnie:
My wildly busy summer is segueing into a still-too-busy-for-my-tastes fall. But things are slowly easing up a little so I’ll hopefully be able to enjoy more of my favorite (but all too brief) season. I’m finally mostly done with working on my game Nonsensory, part of the Jackbox Party Pack 9, which now has a release date of October 20. Maybe we can/should try to figure out how to do a Patreon playalong of the new Party Pack at some point. Next comes my favorite part of the year at work, where I papertest lots of halfbaked ideas to see if anything seems promising to pitch for next year.
I don’t talk much about my real personal life here. Dispositionally, I’m kind of an oversharer at heart, which may not be surprising from someone who decided to play a fictionalized version of themself on a podcast, but as I’ve gotten older, and especially as my kid has gotten older, I’ve tried to be more thoughtful about the ways the story of my life is not entirely my own. That said, I’ve been dating a wonderful woman named Emily for most of the last year, and I wanted to share that we’ve moved in together. There are still boxes all over the place. She’s great. She’d never heard of the podcast before we started dating, she’s listened to some of it since, and she’s still interested in me! (That last sentence is probably said a lot during modern day romance.) Of all the things in all these updates her moving in is easily the thing that’s made me most happy.
TV – The tv I watched this month from favorite to less favorite. All strong.
- Bluey s3
- Taskmaster s10
- Claim to Fame
- Master Chef Jr
Movies – Same deal: best to… least best. (They start to dip most dramatically in the last stretch.)
- Top Gun: Maverick - in a movie theater and everything
- Princess Bride
- Ponyo/Kiki’s Delivery Service/ Castle in the Sky - The kiddo continues to want to rewatch Miyazaki movies and it’s been great!
- RRR
- Escape Room
- Hustle
- Venom
- St. Vincent
- Enemy
Games
- Inscryption - Really great. If you’re looking for something atmospheric for spooky season, I highly recommend it.
- Kirby and the Lost Kingdom - The kiddo and I are getting close to finishing it. I think.
One Last Thing
It was just Matt Young’s birthday! He’s the best. In the comments share something Matt’s done that has made you happy.
Business Owner,
Arnie
From Matt:
This one is going to be a bit light between moving and work.
Getting settled in our new apartment is taking some time, but it’s all good. I’m happy to report that I found some spatulas today (an implement that I use for pretty much everything apparently) my kitchen life is taking small steps back toward normalcy.
TV/Movies/Web stuff:
Finished rewatching The Office. Still good. Jumped right back into Parks and Rec (needed some comfort TV).
Books (all audio again):
Nothing. Downloaded some new audiobooks, but still finishing what I already had.
Games:
Hoping to get the PS5 and my TV set up this weekend. Asked for some new games for my b-day (9/30). Very curious about Tunic, but also hoping to get into Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West. Fingers crossed. Possible huge game update next month.
Food:
Eating out more than we normally would. Another casualty of moving. Went to Margie’s for ice cream (probably for the last time this year). Got Superman ice cream. It’s fine. They have better options, if you live in Chicago and are looking to cling onto to summer one last time this year, I recommend Margie’s even though it’s very clearly not summer. I’m also thinking about pancakes more than normal, so…that’s something.
MY
From Adal:
My hectic season is over and now I coast! I still have a bit of travel and one more wedding to go to but it’s nice to know I’ll mostly be home and can nest on the couch watching spooky stuff with Jemma, Fries, Brisket and Cocoa. I’m looking forward to my annual rewatch of Over The Garden Wall; which if you haven’t seen you absolutely should do so. One of the rare pieces of media that (for as new as it is) feels like a timeless classic you’ve always loved. I think next year I’m going to try and rent out a movie theater and have a showing of it for anyone interested. If you’re looking for horror films this month might I recommend: The Thing, Hereditary, REC. (spanish version), It Follows, Trick R’ Treat and The Witch. Oh and also the (VERY) short ‘Lights Out!’ Possibly the most chilling 2 minutes of film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUQhNGEu2KA
Had a wonderful time on the road during the month. A huge thank you to everyone who came out to NYC and DC for the Hey Riddle Riddle Live shows! In NYC Jemma and I got to meet up with our friends Stuart and Sharlene to see A Strange Loop and afterwards they introduced us to one of our new favorite spots; Veselka! In Philly we had the best cheesesteaks and pizza at Angelo’s and fell hard for Korshak Bagels. Highly recommend all those places. I also got to spend some time in Cincinnati for a friend's birthday and it was a way cooler city then I remember from when I used to visit.
In the coming weeks Jemma and I are headed to Madison, WI for a concert, Milwaukee to see my sister do a show and London to catch the new Punchdrunk show; The Burning City! Please let me know if you have any tips for any of those cities. (Madison of course is the London of the Midwest).
Here’s what I consumed in September:
TV:
- Sopranos - finally finished and dear god is it way funnier then I remember. Absolutely brilliant comedic moments sandwiched between violence and some of the best dramatic acting you’ll find
- Andor
- Reboot
- Abbott Elementary season 2
- Cobra Kai season 5
- Survivor season 43
- Ramy season 3
- Chef’s Table: Pizza
- Rick & Morty season 6
- Los Espooky season 2
- The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers season 2
Movies:
- The Nice Guys - I’ve somehow missed seeing this movie until recently and I absolutely adore it.
- Elvis
- Many Saints of Newark
- Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel
- Patton Oswalt: We All Scream
- Sam Morril: Same Time Tomorrow
- Nick Kroll: Little Big Boy
Other Stuffs:
- Inscryption - started playing this on PS4 after JPC, Arnie and Brooke Breit all raved about it. I can’t think of a more perfect seasonal game to have started and I’m giddy about how things keep continuing in the game in very surprising ways.
- Started listening to The Always Sunny Podcast
- I was a recent guest on a MEGA Live show in Chicago and had a wonderful time! Check out there show and catch them on tour if you can: https://www.megathepodcast.com/p/Live/
- Speaking of shows to catch on the road; there’s a Big Grande tour! I don’t think there’s a current group of improvisers that makes me laugh more then these 4 do: https://biggrandewebsite.com/tourdates/
- I was (just this morning!) a guest on the podcast That’s What I’m Tolkien About and had a great time discussing the latest episode of Rings Of Power. My episode I believe comes out this Tuesday if you’d like to listen!
- Also out this Tuesday (10/4) is a new podcast I’ve been recording with QCode network called The Monster Line! I play a cowboy vampire so I’m reeeeallly stretching my character work to the limit. Check it out if you’re so inclined! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1645919438?ign-itscg=30200&ign-itsct=podcast_box_promote_link Also @monsterlinepod on Twitter and Instagram
Please let me know what you’ve been enjoying and let me know if you have any favorite haunted houses or fall activity spots in the Chicagoland area! I already plan on making my yearly trek to Bengston’s pumpkin farm and HellsGate Haunted House!

Excellent news Arnie, happy to hear that!! Happy Belated Birthday to Matt and in terms of mentioning something Matt has done for me, well he took the time to reply to one of my messages. It doesn't seem like much but I had a really rough last couple of years where things were bad and to be honest you guys were the only podcast (and Off menu!) that I listened to and could make me smile so I am grateful to all of you. Plus Matt is just a wiz at improv....I'll see myself out.
